PEDIGREE OF MADOG AP IDNERTH AP CADWGAN
                                       By Darrell Wolcott

This pedigree, which extends down to about the year 1400, uses the same sources cited by Peter Bartrum in his "Welsh Genealogies - AD300-1400" but assembles the data in a chronologically consistent manner, leaving no time gaps nor any of the anachronisms found in his charts.  It includes families we believe belong here which were not connected by Bartrum.  Names are spelled according to our preferred orthography and most birthdate estimates have been rounded to the nearest year ending with 0 or 5.  Estimates not rounded do not indicate a greater accuracy, but simply show our belief that one sibling was older or younger than some other sibling.

For every child and every marriage connection claimed, our sources for the data follow the narrative in red type.  In many cases, there are more sources than shown, but if one source extends the person's ancestry back more generations than all others, only that source is cited.  In the majority of cases, no single source cites more than 3 or 4 generations so it is necessary to "connect" the ancestry by reference to distinctly separate sources, and this joining of sources may occur more than once to reach back to a well-known ancestor.  Each such connection introduces the opportunity for error due to the abundance of same-named men found within the body of Welsh pedigree manuscripts.  Our constructions often differ from those presented by Bartrum, but all maintain a sound chronological timeline.  Where particular problems exist, they are fully discussed and the reasons for choosing our construction are given.  There can be no certainty that our choices, or anyone else's, are absolutely correct.

Index of names

1.  Madog ap Idnerth ap Cadwgan ap Elystan Glodrydd, born c. 1080

Madog was the eldest of 6 brothers and inherited the Lordship of Fferlys when his father (who had been the eldest son of Cadwgan) died, probably near 1112. During his lifetime, the Mortimer family made major inroads into Maelienydd  which eventually reduced his Lordship to little more than the commotes of Ceri and Elfael.

During his father's lifetime, Madog took a mistress, a base daughter of King Rhys ap Tewdwr of Deheubarth, named Gwenllian.  She was born c. 1085 to an unknown consort and was either a widow or spinster when Madog made her his lover.  By this Gwenllian, Madog had two sons:

         2.  Cadwgan ap Madog ap Idnerth, born c. 1110
         3.  Hywel ap Madog ap Idnerth, born c. 1111

When his father died c. 1112 and Madog first became a major land-owner, he married Rhanullt (1099), eldest daughter of Gruffudd (1070) ap Cynan (1035) ap Iago (1005), Lord of Anglesey.  They had 4 sons:

        4.  Cadwallon ap Madog ap Idnerth. born c. 1113
        5.  Einion Clud ap Madog ap Idnerth, born c. 1114
        6.  Adda ap Madog ap Idnerth, born c. 1115
        7.  Gruffudd Fele ap Madog ap Idnerth, born c. 1115

Three more children were sired by Madog after a space of 4 years, but it is not known if these were born to his wife or to another mistress:  None appear to have received any inheritance from Madog:

Maredudd ap Madog ap Idnerth, born c. 1121.  He was killed, yet unmarried, in 1146 by the men of Hugh Mortimer
Dyddgu ferch Madog ap Idnerth, born c. 1120.  She married Robert (1110) ap Llywarch (1070) ap Trahaearn (1035), Lord of Cedewain.
Mallt ferch Madog ap Idnerth, born c. 1125.  She married Llewelyn (1120) ap Idnerth Benfras (1085) ap Uchdryd (1055) ap Edwin (1020) of Tegeingl.

Madog was yet active on the battlefield in 1136, when he joined his brothers-in-law, Owain Gwynedd and Cadwaladr, in their attempt to drive the Normans out of Ceredigion.  He died of natural causes in 1140 near age 60.

ABT 11 cites "Madog ap Idnerth ap Cadwgan ap Elystan Glodrydd" and adds "Rhanullt ferch Gruffudd ap Cynan" was the mother of Cadwallon ap Madog ap Idnerth"

Dwnn i, 332 cites "Gwenllian ferch Rhys ap Tewdwr" was a consort of "Madog ap Idnerth ap Cadwgan

ByT 1146 says "Maredudd ap Madog ap Idnerth was slain"

ABT 14 cites "Dyddgu fertch Madog ap Idnerth ap Cadwgan" as the mother of Maredudd ap Robert ap Llywarch ap Trahaearn"

Vis of Shropshire, 384 says "Mallt ferch Madog ap Idnerth" was the wife of "Lles ap Idnerth Benfras" while Pen 131, 285 & 286 cite "Idnerth Benfras ap Uchdryd ap Edwin"   It was the much earlier Idnerth Benfras ap Gwrydr Hir who had a son named Lles; the 11th century Idnerth Benfras had a son named Llewelyn.

Bartrum charts 2 more sons of Madog ap Idnerth, Dafydd and Meurig, whose ages do not fit.  All of the families shown for those men actually descended from the c. 955 Elystan of Powys, not from Elystan Glodrydd of Buellt.  He also charts a Maredudd ap Hywel ap Madog whose age does not fit his chart.  That man is actually #42 below.

SECOND GENERATION:

2.  Cadwgan ap Madog ap Idnerth, born c. 1110.

He inherited nothing from his father and appears to have made peace with his father's enemies, the Mortimer family.  Neither his residence nor wife is known, but he was killed in 1142, leaving a young son:

       8.  Idnerth ap Cadwgan ap Madog, born c. 1140.

ByT 1142 records "Hywel and Cadwgan,  sons of Madog ap Idnerth, we slain"

3.  Hywel ap Madog ap Idnerth, born c. 1111.  His wife is unknown, but he had a daughter before being killed with his brother in 1142, possibly by his half-brothers.

Sioned ferch Hywel ap Madog, born c. 1137.  She married (1) Gruffudd (1122) ap Cadifor (1090) ap Selyf (1055) descended from Tudwal Gloff.  About 1180, she married secondly, as his 2nd wife, Owain Brogyntyn (1140) ap Madog (1098) ap Maredudd (1065).  Owain was a base son of the King of Powys.

ByT 1142 records "Hywel and Cadwgan, sons of Madog ap Idnerth, were slain"

Dwnn ii, 49 and Dwnn i, 230 cite this marriage, but transpose the names of her father and grandfather as "Madog ap Hywel" and identify her father as "Lord of Maelienydd".  The Lord was actually Madog ap Idnerth

Dwnn ii, 109 says "Sioned ferch Hywel ap Madog ap Idnerth" married Owain Brogyntyn

The "Maredudd ap Hywel" which Bartrum shows on his charts was born c. 1220 and his correct ancestry is "ap Hywel (1190) ap Madog (1155) ap Idnerth (1120) ap Cadwgan (1090) ap Madog (1055) ap Idnerth (1020) ap Cadwgan (985) ap Elystan of Powys (955)

4.  Cadwallon ap Madog ap Idnerth, born c. 1113
The "Lordship of Maelienydd" which he inherited from his father was actually just the manors he owned in that cantref, plus the Lord's revenue derived from the commote of Ceri.  The Mortimer family controlled the remainder of Maelienydd.  Cadwallon married Efa (1127) ferch Madog (1095) ap Maredudd (1065), King of of Powys. They had 3 sons:

      9.  Maelgwn ap Cadwallon ap Madog, born c. 1142
     10. Cadwallon II ap Cadwallon ap Madog, born c. 1145
Llewelyn ap Cadwallon ap Madog, born c. 1160.  In 1187, his brothers blinded him to prevent him from sharing in their father's wealth and power.  He is presumed to have been unmarried, and no children  are cited for him.  His obit is unknown.

ByT 1160 says "Cadwallon ap Madog ap Idnerth seized Einion Clud, his brother"

"Llawysfrif Hendregadredd", pp 121, 125 say "Cadwallon ap Madog ap Idnerth" married "Efa ferch Madog ap Maredudd"

ByT 1187 reports "Llewelyn ap Cadwallon ap Madog" was seized by his brothers and blinded

Cadwallon ap Madog was murdered by retainers of Roger Mortimer in 1179 near age 66.

5.  Einion Clud ap Madog ap Idnerth, born c. 1114.

He inherited the Lordship of Elfael but resided at his manor of Clud near Llanfihangel Nant Melan in the commote of Llythfnwg (later called Radnor). His wife is unknown, but he had 4 children:

     11.  Einion of Porth ap Einion Clud ap Madog, born c. 1150
     12.  Llewelyn ap Einion Clud ap Madog, born c. 1150
Lliwelydd ferch Einion Clud ap Madog, born c. 1145.  She married Gronwy (1130) ap Einion (1095) ap  Llywarch (1065) ap Gronwy (1035) ap Einion (1005) ap Llywarch (975) ap Rhiryd (940) descended  from Pasgen ap Urien of Rhos, who resettled in Gower at the start of the 10th century.
Elen ferch Einion Clud ap Madog, born c. 1155.  She married Gruffudd (1145) ap Gronwy (1115) ap  Gwrgeneu (1085) ap Hoedliw (1055) ap Cadwgan (1020) ap Elystan Glodrydd (990)

Einion Clud was ambushed and killed in 1177 by retainers of the Mortimer family.

ByT 1160 says "Cadwallon ap Madog ap Idnerth seized Einion Clud, his brother"

Dwnn i, 20, 131 & 210 say "Lliwelydd ferch Einion Clud ap Madog" married "Gronwy ap Einion ap Llywarch"

Bodleian Add. C.177, 2  says "Elen ferch Einion Clud ap Madog" married "Gruffudd ap Gronwy ap Gwrgenwu"

ByT 1177 reports "Einion Clud was slain"

6.  Adda ap Madog ap Idnerth, born c. 1115.

It is not known what Adda inherited from his father, but it did not include any Lordship.  His wife is unknown, but he had a single daughter:

Angharad ferch Adda ap Madog was born c. 1145.  She married Llewelyn (1130) ap Einion (1095) ap Llewelyn (1060) ap Meilyr Gryg (1025) of the parish of Tregynon in Cedewain.  The family is a junior cadet of the First Powys Royal Family descended from Brochwel Ysgithrog.  They resided at the manor of Gregynog.

No obit is recorded for Adda ap Madog.

MC 10, 2;  Dwnn i, 283 & Dwnn i, 299 say "Angharad ferch Adda ap Madog  ap Idnerth ap Cadwgan" married "Llewelyn ap Einion ap Llewelyn ap Meilyr Gryg"

Bartrum charts Angharad as a daughter of Adda ap Madog ap Maredudd ap Maelgwn in order to date her near 1285 so she would match the Llewelyn ap Einion ap Llewelyn ap Meilyr who was born c. 1280,  He was unaware that the Meilyr Gryg family contained two 5-name strings of same-named men, one following the other

7.  Gruffudd Fele ap Madog ap Idnerth, born c. 1115.

Neither his land holdings, name of his wife, nor his obit date are known.  He had one son:

         13.  Gruffudd Goch ap Gruffudd Fele ap Madog, born c. 1145

Pen 131, 65 mentions "Gruffudd Fele ap Madog ap Idnerth"

THIRD  GENERATION:

8. Idnerth ap Cadwgan ap Madog. born c. 1140

Often mistaken for Idnerth ap Cadwgan ap Elystan Glodrydd, this is the Idnerth who married Dyddgu (1155) ferch Aaron (1120)  ap Payne (1085).  This Payne fitz John was a retainer of Miles, Earl of Hereford, and he invaded Elfael c. 1130 and built Painscastle.

Idnerth ap Cadwgan was barely a toddler when his father was killed, and it would appear that his mother was a non-Welsh lady who raised him in a Saxon household.  He and Dyddgu had 3 known sons:

          14.  Madog ap Idnerth ap Cadwgan, born c. 1170
          15.  Adda ap Idnerth ap Cadgwan, born c. 1172
          16.  Aaron ap Idnerth ap Cadwgan, born c. 1175

No obit date is known for Idnerth.

Dwnn i, 297 says "Idnerth ap Cadwgan" married "Dyddgu ferch Aron ap Paen"

9.  Maelgwn ap Cadwallon ap Madog, born c. 1142

When his father was killed in 1179 (and his youngest brother blinded in 1187), Maelgwn held a moiety of the Lordship of Ceri as well as an equal share of manors in Maelienydd and Elfael once held by his grandfather.  He married Sioned (1150) ferch Morgan (1110) ap Hywel (1075) ap Rhiryd (1045) ap Trahaearn (1008) ap Pasgen I (980) ap Gwyn I (950) ap Gruffudd I (915) ap Beli I (885) ap Selyf I (850) ap Brochwel I (820) ap Aeddan I (785) of the First Powys Royal Family.  They had 5 children:

         17.  Maredudd ap Maelgwn ap Cadwallon, born c. 1170
         18.  Maelgwn II ap Maelgwn ap Cadwallon, born c. 1172
         19.  Cadwallon ap Maelgwn ap Cadwallon, born c. 1173
         20.  Madog ap Maelgwn ap Cadwallon, born c. 1175
Gwerfyl ferch Maelgwn ap Cadwallon, born c. 1175.  She married Rhys Gloff (1165) ap Rhys Fychan (1130) ap Gruffudd (1085) ap Rhys (1051) ap Tewdwr (1023).

Maelgwn ap  Cadwallon died, apparently of natural causes, in 1197 near age 55.

Harl 1973, 152 cites "Maelgwn ap Cadwallon ap Madog " married "Sioned ferch Morgan ap Hywel"

Dwnn ii, 175 says "Gwerfyl ferch Maelgwn ap Cadwallon" married "Rhys Gloff ap Gruffudd"  Bartrum agrees this citation omitted Rhys Fychan as the father of Rhys Gloff in his index of names in Vol 5 of his "Welsh Genealogies AD 300-1400"

ByT 1197 records the death of Maelgwn ap Cadwallon of Maelienydd

10.  Cadwallon II ap Cadwallon ap Madog, born c. 1145

The younger Cadwallon held the other half of the Lordship of Ceri.  Neither his wife nor his obit date are known, but he had 5 children:

         21.  Hywel ap Cadwallon II ap Cadwallon, born c. 1175
Owain Cascob ap Cadwallon II ap Cadwallon, born c. 1177.  He was killed in a Norman raid in 1198 and never married.  His nickname means "with the hated coat" but details are lacking.
Sian ferch Cadwallon II ap Cadwallon, born c. 1180.  She married Maredudd Bengoch (1175) ap Llewelyn Fraisg (1145) ap Hywel (1115) ap Seisyll (1085) ap Llewelyn (1055) ap Cadwgan (1020) ap Elystan Glodrydd (980)
Alison ferch Cadwallon II ap Cadwallon, born c. 1180.  She married Dolphyn (1165) ap Rhiwallon (1135) ap Madog (1105) ap Rhiwallon (1075) ap Madog (1045) ap Cadwgan (1015), a Rhos family which had  relocated to Arwystli.  This was a cousin line to Cadwgan of Nannau.
Nest ferch Cadwallon II ap Cadwallon, born c. 1185.  She married Gruffudd (1185) ap Cadifor (1155) ap Selyf (1125) ap Cadifor (1090) ap Selyf (1055) ap Ifor Felyn (1025) ap Tegwas (990) ap Gwyn (960) ap Aelan (930) of Dyfed, descended from Tudwal Gloff ap Rhodri Mawr

Virtually all the early sources conflate Cadwallon ap Madog (1113-1179) with his son, Cadwallon II ap Cadwallon (c. 1145-?)  But historian G.T.O. Bridgeman, in MC 1, 240 states that Cadwallon ap Madog left two sons,  Maelgwn and Cadwallon.  Bridgemen does not mention a third son, Llewelyn, likely because that brother was blinded by his siblings in 1187.  ByT entry for 1194 mentions the "sons of Cadwallon" active on the battlefield, so there were at least two sons of adult age and in fighting shape in that year.

ByT 1198 records  a battle in which Owain ap Cadwallon was slain.  "Cronica de Wallia  and Other Documents from Exeter Cathedral Library Ms 3514" calls him Owain Cascob.  To be on the battlefield in 1198, this Owain should not be identified as a son of Cadwallon ap Madog, but a grandson of that man.

Harl 1977, 82 cites "Sian ferch Cadwallon ap Madog" married Maredudd Bengoch.  That man was born c. 1175 so Sian could only be "ferch Cadwallon ap Cadwallon ap Madog".

Dwnn i, 304 says "Alison ferch Cadwallon ap Madog" married Dolfyn  ap Rhiwallon.  Again, we suggest the lady was "ferch Cadwallon ap Cadwallon ap Madog" to be age appropriate for this marriage

Bodleian Add c.177, 2 cites "Nest ferch Cadwallon ap Madog" married Gruffudd ap Cadifor ap Selyf, so chronologically, she must be "ferch Cadwallon ap Cadwallon ap Madog"

11.  Einion of Porth ap Einion Clud ap Madog, born c. 1150

The eldest son of Einion Clud married Susanna (1160) ferch Lord Rhys (1123) of Deheubarth.  Y Porth was a place-name not far from his father's manor of Clud in Radnor.  In 1175, Lord Rhys took a group of Welsh nobles to meet with King Henry II in Gloucester, as they had incurred the king's displeasure and wished to make amends.  One of these men is cited in the Brut as "Einion Clud, son-in-law" of Lord Rhys, while another was named as "Cadwallon ap Madog, first-cousin" of Lord Rhys.  Actually, Einion Clud was a brother of Cadwallon, so another first-cousin of Lord Rhys. (Their mothers were sisters.)  It was Einion ap Einion Clud who had married a daughter of Lord Rhys.  We suspect this was two brothers, both Welsh Lords, going to meet the king, not a man past age 60 (Cadwallon) with his nephew (Einion of Porth) near age 30.

Einion of Porth was killed by his brother, Llewelyn,  in 1191.  He left 3 sons:

         22. Einion Clud II ap Einion ap Einion Clud, born c. 1176
         23.  Maredudd ap Einion ap Einion Clud, born c. 1180
Gwalter Fychan ap Einion ap Einion Clud, born 1175.  In 1215, Llewelyn ap Iorwerth swept through southeast Wales, returning many Norman held castles to Welsh control.  He tuned over control of Painscastle and Colwyn Castle and the commote of Elfael to Gwallter Fychan.  No wife or date of obit are known for Gwallter.

Gerald of Wales "The Journey Through Wales" Book 1, Chapter 1 says "Next came Einion, son of Einion Clud....Einion rose to his feet and said to Rhys, who was present and whose daughter he had married...."   While the wife of Einion of Porth is usually called "Susanna" by modern writers, and there is an early tract which lists a daughter of Lord Rhys named Susanna, it is mostly inference that she was "probably" the daughter who married Einion.

ByT 1175 also mentions Einion as a son-in-law of Lord Rhys, but does not name the lady. This citation also omits "Einion ap" in calling that son-in-law "Einion Clud".

ByT 1215 cites a "Gwallter Fychan ap Einion Clud" as receiving the lordship of Elfael.  We believe, and the chronology strongly suggests, that Gwallter Fychan was actually the son of Einion ap Einion Clud.

12.  Llewelyn ap Einion Clud ap Madog, born c. 1150

He married Sioned (1165) ferch Morgan (1135) ap Caradog (1105) ap Iestyn (1075) ap Gwrgan (1042) ap Ithel Ddu (1012) ap Ithel (980) ap Idwallon (945) ap Morgan (915) ap Morgan Hen (885), the latter being King of Morgannwg.  It was an earlier Iestyn ap Gwrgan, son of a brother of Ithel Ddu, who ruled the Vale of Glamorgan in the 1090's when that land was conquered by FitzHamo.

His obit is not recorded, but he had one known son:

         24.  Madog ap Llewelyn ap Einion Clud, born c. 1180

Golden Grove Ms. p. 440 cites "Sioned ferch Lord Morgan ap Caradog" as the wife of Llewelyn ap Einion Clud

13.  Gruffudd Goch ap Gruffudd Fele ap Madog, born c. 1145

His wife and obit date are unknown, but he is cited as having 3 sons:

        25.  Trahaearn ap Gruffudd Goch ap Gruffudd Fele, born c. 1175
        26.  Madog ap Gruffudd Goch ap Gruffudd Fele, born c. 1175
        27.  Llewelyn ap Gruffudd Goch ap Gruffudd Fele, born c. 1180

Pen 131, 65; Pen 127, 137; Pen 128, 830a all cite "Gruffudd Goch ap Gruffudd Fele ap Madog"

FOURTH GENERATION:

14.  Madog ap Idnerth ap Cadwgan, born c. 1170.

He married Rose (c. 1185), daughter of Roger Mortimer (1153-1214).  The latter was the mortal enemy of Madog's cousins who held Lordships in the Ceri/Maelienydd/Elfael commotes.  This marriage tends to confirm that his grand-father's mother had been a non-Welsh lady, and that his father had been raised on Saxon/Norman lands.  His obit is unknown, but he had 3 sons:

       28.  Adda ap Madog ap Idnerth, born c. 1200
       29.  Hywel ap Madog ap Idnerth, born c. 1205
       30.  Cadwallon ap Madog ap Idnerth, born c. 1207

In his Preface to "Account of the Ruinated Abbey of Cwmhir", an 1850 pamphlet, Rev W J Rees says that the eldest son of Maelgwn ap Cadwallon ap Madog was Madog, and that he married Rose, daughter of Roger Mortimer, and had a son named Adda.  While that Madog was NOT Maelgwn's eldest son, he WAS one of the men hanged by King John in 1212. We find it incredulous to believe the King hung a son-in-law of Mortimer.  We think Rev Rees did not know which Madog married the Mortimer lady, but chose the only Madog he knew that was born near 1170.  Our identifying him as Madog ap Idnerth ap Cadwgan ap Madog (another Madog born c. 1170) better assigns the marriage to a Welshman known to have a Saxon mother and loyalties to the Norman barons.

15.  Adda ap Idnerth ap Cadwgan, born c. 1172

His wife and obit date are not known, but he had one son:

       31.  Madog ap Adda ap Idnerth, born c. 1205

Bodleian Add C.177, 7 cites "Maredudd ap Madog ap Adda".  Bartrum mentions this family in his Welsh Genealogies chart "Elystan Glodrydd 36" but did not know the further ancestry of Adda.

16.  Aaron ap Idnerth ap Cadwgan. born c. 1175

His wife and obit date are unknown, but he had two sons:

        32.  Gruffudd ap Aaron ap Idnerth, born c. 1205
Meurig ap Adda ap Idnerth, born c. 1210.  His wife and obit date are unknown; he had a daughter:
Efa ferch Meurig ap Adda, born c. 1245, who married Adda Ddu (1235) ap Gruffudd (1205) ap Einion (1170) ap Cynfelyn (1140) of Maesmawr in Arwystli
Dwnn i, 310 & 320: MC 10, 28 say "Efa ferch Meurig ap Aron paen" married Adda Ddu ap Gruffudd ap Einion ap Cynfelyn.  Chronologically, this Aaron Paen must have been a son of Dyddgu ap Aaron Payne, the wife of Idnerth ap Cadwgan ap Madog.

17.  Maredudd ap Maelgwn ap Cadwallon, born c. 1170

He inherited the moiety of the Lordship of Ceri that his father had held.  His wife and obit date are not known, but he appears to have died after 1212 when his brother, Madog, was hanged, and before 1234 when his brother, Cadwallon, died of natural causes. His moiety of the lordship was divided between his brothers, Maelgwn II and Cadwallon.  Maredudd left 2 sons and a daughter:

           33.  Madog ap Maredudd ap Maelgen, born c. 1205
Angharad ferch Maredudd ap Maelgwn, born c. 1200.  She married Iarddur (1185) ap Cynddelw (1150) ap Iarddur (1115) ap Cynddelw (1080) ap Trahaearn (1045) ap Bod (1015) ap Pasgen (985) ap Heilig (950) ap Glannog (915) of Arllechwedd Uchaf in Gwynedd.
Llewelyn ap Maredudd ap Maelgwn, born c. 1200.  He had a son
Hywel ap Llewelyn ap Maredudd, born c. 1235.  He had a son
Philip ap Hywel ap Llewelyn, born c. 1265.  He had a son
Einion ap Philip ap Hywel, born c. 1295.  He had a son
Dafydd ap Einion ap Philip, born c. 1330.  He had a son
Maredudd ap Dafydd ap Einion, born c. 1360.  He had a son
Dafydd ap Maredudd ap Dafydd, born c. 1390.  He married a daughter (1400) ferch Dafydd (1365) ap Llewelyn Crugeryr (1335) ap Philip (1305) ap Meurig (1270) ap Hoedliw (1235) ap Philip (1205) ap Rhys Gryg (1165) ap Lord Rhys.

Pen 131, 280; Pen 127, 101 & 145; and Pen 128, 192b cite "Maredudd ap Maelgwn ap Cadwallon ap Madog"

Dwnn ii, 75, 136, 166 & 272 all say "Angharad ferch Maredudd ap Maelgwn" married Iarddur ap Cynddelw

Pen 134, 204/205 cites "a daughter of Dafydd ap Llewelyn Crugeryr" married "Dafydd ap Maredudd ap Dafydd ap Einion ap Philip".  We extended that Philip back to Maredudd ap Maelgwn by using a same-named cousin family descended from Maelgwn II

18.  Maelgwn II ap Maelgwn ap Cadwallon, born c 1172

He inherited 1/4 of the Lordship of Ceri from his older brother, probably in the 1220's, but in 1228, the entire Lordship of Ceri was taken from its hereditary owners by their over-lord, Llewelyn ap Iorwerth,  The lordship was given to Ralph Mortimer when he married a daughter of King Llewelyn.

Neither his wife, nor date of his death is recorded, but he left a son:

           34.  Maredudd ap Maelgwn II ap Maelgwn, born c. 1200

Only Pen 137, 182 says that Maelgwn ap Cadwallon ap Madog had a son also named Maelgwn.  Many citations of his subsequent family incorrectly call him "Maelgwn ap Cadwallon" rather than "Maelgwn ap Maelgwn ap Cadwallon" and as they stand, the citations are chronologically absurd

19.  Cadwallon ap Maelgwn ap Cadwallon, born c. 1173.

He had inherited 1/4 of the Lordship of Ceri  from his older brother, Maredudd.  This was taken away in 1228 when the entire lordship was granted to Ralph Mortimer.  His wife is unknown, but he died at the Abbey of Cwmhir in 1234, leaving a son:

          35.  Hywel ap Cadwallon ap Maelgwn, born c. 1205

ByT 1234 records the death of Cadwallon ap Maelgwn

20.  Madog ap Maelgwn ap Cadwallon, born c. 1175.

His wife is unknown, but he was convicted in 1212 for sedition and hanged at Bridgenorth, together with a first-cousin, Hywel ap Cadwallon II ap Cadwallon.  He left an only daughter:

Eigr ferch Madog ap Maelgwn, born c. 1205.  She married Samuel (1190) ap Cadafael (1160) ap Samuel (1130) ap Cadafael Ynfyd (1100) ap Llywarch 1070) ap Trahaearn (1035) ap Caradog of Arwystli

        ByT 1212 records his execution

Dwnn i, 136 and Dwnn ii, 126 cite the marriage of "Eigr ferch Madog ap Cadwallon" to Samuel ap Cadafael.  Cadwallon had no son named Madog, but a daughter of Madog ap Maelgwn ap Cadwallon would be the right age for the marriage cited

21.  Hywel ap Cadwallon II ap Cadwallon, born c. 1175.

He inherited the moiety of the Lordship of Ceri from his father.  When he was executed for sedition, along with his first-cousin, in 1212, his lordship rights were forfeited to King Llewelyn ap Iorwerth.

His wife is unknown, but he left three sons:

Owain ap Hywel ap Cadwallon II, born c. 1205
Maredudd ap Hywel ap Cadwallon II, born c. 1207
Cadwaladr ap Hywel ap Cadwallon II, born 1210

In 1248, Owain ap Hywel petitioned King Henry III for the restoration of the moeity of Ceri which his father, Hywel ap Cadwallon II, had held, offering to pay a "fine" of 50 pounds sterling. The king granted his request.  The following year, Maredudd ap Hywel, asked the king to confirm his paternal rights to an equal share of the Lordship which his brother, Owain, now held.  That request was also granted, but Maredudd was required to pay his brother half of the fine he'd paid. No mention has been found that the third brother claimed his portion, but he may have died before 1249.

The final notice of this moiety of Ceri was when a Gruffudd Goch ap Owain deeded his 1/4 of Ceri to Edmund Mortimer about the year 1281.  He was probably the son of Owain ap Hywel,  This was the same year that the king declared all Ceri forfeit and gave it to the Mortimers.

       ByT 1212 records his execution

"History of the Parish of Kerry" by by Edward R Morris in MC vol 23, documents the claims to Ceri described above

22.  Einion Clud II ap Einion ap Einion Clud, born c. 1175

No wife or obit date are known for this Einion, but he left two sons:

        36.  Maredudd ap Einion Clud II ap Einion, born c. 1205
Llewelyn ap Einion Clud II ap Einion, born c. 1210.  He left a single daughter:
Annes ferch Llewelyn ap Einion Clud II, born c. 1245.  She married Adda (1235) ap Madog (1205) ap Adda (1172) ap Idnerth (1140) ap Cadwgan  (1110) ap Madog (1080).  See #45 below

Bod. Add C.177, 7 calls this man "Einion o'Porth" but chronologically requires him born c. 1175.  Bod. Add c.178, 98 calls him "Einion Clud" and requires him born c. 1175.  To fit this timeline, we posit the intended man was an "Einion Clud of Porth", a grandson of the Einion Clud ap Madog born c. 1115.

Bod. Add c.177 , also cites Annes' husband  as "Adda ap Madog ap Maredudd" who was born c. 1257. We believe she married the age-appropriate man shown above.

23.  Maredudd ap Einion ap Einion Clud, born c. 1180

His wife and obit date are unknown, but he left two sons:

          37.  Owain ap Maredudd ap Einion, born c. 1210
          38.  Einion ap Maredudd ap Einion, born c. 1210

Harl 2291(1), 7 cites brothers "Owain and Einion" as sons of "Maredudd ap Einion Clud".  From their descendants, those brothers were born near 1210 so their father, Maredudd, must be a son of Einion ap Einion Clud.  Bartrum's charts show Maredudd's birth date as being 2 generations after Einion Clud.   We found no evidence that Einion Clud ever had a son named Maredudd.

24.  Madog ap Llewelyn ap Einion Clud, born c. 1180

Neither his wife nor obit date are recorded, but he left a son:

         39.  Morgan ap Madog ap Llewelyn, born c. 1215

Golden Grove Ms p. 615 cites "Madog ap Llewelyn ap Einion Clud"

25.  Trahaearn ap Gruffudd Goch ap Gruffudd Fele, born c. 1175

He married Arddun (1175)  ferch Cynfelyn (1140) ap Dolphyn (1110) ap Rhiwallon (1075) ap Madog (1045) ap Cadwgan (1015) of Rhos.  Her family had relocated to Arwystli from north Wales.  His obit is not known, but he left one son:

         40.  Madog ap Trahaearn ap Gruffudd Goch, born c. 1205

Harl 1972, 70 and Bodleian Add c177, 3 cite "Trahaearn ap Gruffudd Goch ap Gruffudd Fele"

26.  Madog ap Gruffudd Goch ap Gruffudd Fele, born c. 1175

His wife and obit date are unknown, but he had a son:

         41.  Hywel ap Madog ap Gruffudd Goch, born c. 1205

This Madog begins the same-named cousin branch one generation before the family of Madog ap Trahaearn ap Gruffudd Goch. #41 below.  Dwnn i, 252 conflates these two same-named families.

27.  Llewelyn ap Gruffudd Goch ap Gruffudd Fele, born c. 1180

His wife and obit date are not known, but he left a son:

          42.  Hywel ap Llewelyn ap Gruffudd Goch, born c. 1210

Pen 176, 127 cites "Llewelyn ap Gruffudd Goch ap Gruffudd Fele"

FIFTH GENERATION:

28.  Adda ap Madog ap Idnerth, born c. 1200

His wife and obit date are unknown, but he had a son:

           43.  Gwilym ap Adda ap Madog, born c. 1235

This is the son, Adda, mentioned herein.

29.  Hywel ap Madog ap Idnerth, born c. 1205

His wife and obit date are unknown, but he had a son:

           44.  Maredudd ap Hywel ap Madog, born c. 1235

Dwnn ii, 254 cites this "Hywel ap Madog ap Idnerth"

30.  Cadwallon ap Madog ap Idnerth, born c. 1207

His wife and obit date are unknown, but he had a daughter:

Mawd ferch Cadwallon ap Madog, born c. 1240.  She married Maredudd (1234) ap Gruffudd (1200) ap Maredudd Gethin (1170) ap Lord Rhys.

Pen 128, 351a and Harl 2414, 48 cite the marriage of "Mawd ferch Cadwallon ap Madog ap Idnerth" to "Maredudd ap Gruffudd ap Maredudd Gethin ap Lord Rhys"

31.  Madog ap Adda ap Idnerth, born c. 1205

His wife and obit date are unknown, but he had 2 sons:

           45.  Adda ap Madog ap Adda, born c. 1235
           46.  Maredudd ap Madog ap Adda, born c. 1240

Bodleian Add C.177, 7 cites "Maredudd ap Madog ap Adda".  Bartrum mentions this family in his Welsh Genealogies chart "Elystan Glodrydd 36" but he did not know the further ancestry of Adda.

32.  Gruffudd ap Aaron ap Idnerth, born c. 1205

No wife or obit date is recorded for him, but he had a son:

Aaron ap Gruffudd ap Aaron, born c. 1235. He married Arddun (1240) ferch Einion (1205) ap Meurig (1175) ap Ieuaf (1145) ap Gronwy (1115) ap Ifor (1085) ap Idnerth (1050) ap Cadwgan (1020) ap Elystan Glodrydd

Dwnn i, 314 cites "Aaron ap Gruffudd ap Aaron" married "Arddun ferch Einion ap Ieuaf of Cefn y Llys"  However, Pen 128, 723b & Pen 176, 125 cite that Einion as "ap Meurig ap Ieuaf ap Gronwy" and Dwnn i, 314 then continues correctly as "Gronwy ap Ifor ap Idnerth ap Cadwgan ap Elystan"

33.  Madog ap Maredudd ap Maelgwn, born c. 1205

No wife or obit date is known for him, but he had 3 sons:

        47.  Adda ap Madog ap Maredudd, born c. 1235
        48.  Einion Hen ap Madog ap Maredudd, born c. 1235
        49.  Madog Fychan ap Madog ap Maredudd, born c. 1240
        50.  Cadwallon ap Madog ap Maredudd, born c. 1240

Some citations for a "Madog ap Maredudd ap Maelgwn" are, in fact, speaking of "Madog ap Maredudd ap Maelgwn II" (#51 below)  The three sons shown here were born a generation earlier to a "Madog ap Maredudd", but none of the citations mentioning these sons name the father of that Maredudd.  We think he was Maelgwn ap Cadwallon, father of Maelgwn II

34.  Maredudd ap Maelgwn II ap Maelgwn, born c. 1200

In 1249, together with his cousin, Hywel ap Cadwallon ap Maelgwn, he petitioned the king for the moeity of Ceri once held by their grandfather, Maelgwn ap Cadwallon ap Madog.  The petition was granted, giving the cousins, Maredudd and Hywel, one-quarter each.

No wife or obit date is known for him, but he had 3 sons:

        51.  Madog ap Maredudd ap Maelgwn II, born c. 1228
        52.  Llewelyn ap Maredudd ap Maelgwn II, born c. 1230
        53.  Iorwerth ap Maredudd ap Maelgwn II, born c. 1235

Calendar of Inquisitions Miscellanous (Chancery) Vol 1, writ #76 is a petition by Hywel ap Cadwallon and Maredudd ap Maelgwn for the moiety of Ceri once held by their grandfather, Maelgwn ap Cadwallon ap Madog.  Many would identify the "Maredudd ap Maelgwn" in the petition as #17 above,  but that man would not be still alive in 1249

35.  Hywel ap Cadwallon ap Maelgwn, born c. 1205

In 1249, together with his cousin, Maredudd ap Maelgwn II ap Maelgwn, he petitioned the king for the moiety of Ceri once held by their grandfather, Maelgwn ap Cadwallon ap Madog.  The petition was granted, giving the cousins, Hywel and Maredudd, one-quarter each.

No wife or obit date is known for Hywel, but he had a son:

          54.  Gwilym ap Hywel ap Cadwallon, born c.

36.  Maredudd ap Einion Clud II ap Einion, born c. 1205

No wife or obit date is known for him, but he had a son:

         55.  Owain ap Maredudd ap Einion Clud II, born c. 1235

Bodleian Add C178, 98 cites "Maredudd ap Einion Clud"  His descendants require that "Einion Clud" to be born near 1175, thus a grandson of Einion Clud ap Madog

37.  Owain ap Maredudd ap Einion, born c. 1210

In 1260, Llewelyn ap Gruffudd of Gwynedd took Elfael from Roger Mortimer, then destroyed the castle at Llanfair.  As a result, Owain ap Maredudd of Elfael came to Llewelyn's peace and gave fealty to him.  No wife or obit date is known for Owain, but he left 3 sons:

Iorwerth ap Owain ap Maredudd, born c. 1240
Gruffudd ap Owain ap Maredudd, born c. 1241
Madog ap Owain ap Maredudd, born c. 1243

These sons are listed among the group of men who guaranteed a 400 pound debt in good and legal money on behalf of an Iorwerth ap Llewelyn, to King Llewelyn in 1271.  Nothing more is known of their families, if any.

ByT 1260 recounts the incident mentioned first above

Littere Wallie, pages 40/41 gives the text of the debt guaranty dated Nov 30, 1271

38.  Einion ap Maredudd ap Einion, born c. 1210

No wife or obit date is known for Einion, but he had a son:

         56.  Richard ap Einion ap Maredudd, born c. 1240

Pen 287, 774 cites "Einion ap Maredudd ap Einion Cludd" but his descendants birth dates require the father of Maredudd to be Einion ap Einion Clud.

39.  Morgan ap Madog ap Llewelyn, born c. 1215

His wife and obit date are unknown, but he had a son:

         57.  Gruffudd ap Morgan ap Madog, born c. 1245

Golfen Globe Ms, page 615 cites "Morgan ap Madog ap Llewelyn"

40.  Madog ap Trahaearn ap Gruffudd Goch, born c. 1205

He married Sian (1210) ferch Trahaearn (1170) ap Iorwerth (1140) ap Einion (1105) ap Rhys Goch (1075) ap Llewelyn Fychan (1035) ap Llewelyn Aurdorchog (1005).  Trahaearn was Lord of Garthmyl in Cydewain, Powys  No obit date is known for Madog, but they had 4 sons:

         58.  Trahaearn ap Madog ap Trahaearn, born c. 1235
         59.  Hywel ap Madog ap Trahaearn, born c. 1240
Robert ap Madog ap Trahaearn, born c. 1235.  He had an only daughter:
Annes ferch Robert ap Madog, born c. 1270.  She married Gruffudd Foel (1255) of Glyn Aeron ap Ifor (1225) ap Cadifor (1190) ap Gwaethfoed of Ceredigion (1160)
Griffri ap Madog ap Trahaearn, born c. 1240.  He had a son
Iorwerth ap Griffri ap Madog, born c. 1275. He had a daughter
Gwerfyl ferch Iorwerth ap Griffri, born c. 1310.  She married Hywel (1300) ap Dafydd (1270) ap Llewelyn (1240) as shown on #99 below

Bodleian Add Ms C177,3 cites "Madog ap Trahaearn ap Gruffudd Goch" married "Sian ferch Trahaearn ap Iorwerth" of Garthmyl.

Dwnn i, 38, 230 & 245 cite "Annes ferch Robert ap Madog of Cydewain" married "Gruffudd Foel ap Ifor" of Glyn Aeron

Dwnn i, 252 cites "Gwerfyl ferch Iorwerth ap Griffri ap Madog ap Trahaearn" married "Hywel ap Dafydd ap Llewelyn ap Hywel ap Madog"

41.  Hywel ap Madog ap Gruffudd Goch, born c. 1205

His wife and obit date are unknown, but he had a son:

         60.  Llewelyn ap Hywel ap Madog, born c. 1240

Dwnn i, 252 inserts "Trahaearn ap Madog" between Madog and Gruffudd Goch since that is the sequence used by the cousin branch which repeated this long string of same-named men.  See #26 above

42.  Hywel ap Llewelyn ap Gruffudd Goch, born c. 1210

His wife and obit date are unknown, but he had a son:

       63.  Hywel ap Adda ap Madog, born c. 1265

Bodleian Add, C177,7 cites "Annes ferch Llewelyn ap Einion o'Porth" married Adda ap Madog ap Maredudd".  The man born c. 1175 called Einion o'Porth was actually the same man elsewhere cited as "Einion Clud" and occurs in the generation of a grandson of Einion Clud and of a son of Einion o'Porth, a man we call "Einion Clud II of Porth"

Pen. 131, 280 cites "Adda ap Madog ap Maredudd".

There are no sources for a "Gruffudd Goch ap Adda" but Bartrum would extend the Dwnn i, 261 citation to add "ap Adda".  We suggest that can be extended to "Adda ap Madog ap Maredudd"

48.  Einion Hen ap Madog ap Maredudd, born c. 1235

Dwnn i, 111 cites "Rhys ap Iorwerth ap Trahaearn" married "Sian ferch Einion Pen of Mochdre"  The citation omits Iorwerth Fychan from Rhys' ancestry, and calls Sian's father Einion "Pen".

His wife is unknown, and he died prior to June 7, 1278.  He had a son:

53.  Iorwerth ap Maredudd ap Maelgwn II, born c. 1235

Maredudd ap Owain ap Maredudd, born c. 1265 of whom nothing more is known

Bodeian Add C178, 98 says "a daughter ferch Owain ap Maredudd ap Einion Clud" married "Adda ap Richard ap Morys" while Pen 131 302 continues "Richard ap Morys ap Elidyr ap Gwaeddan ap Cynan ap Gwrgeneu ap Idnerth ap Elystan"   Chronologically, this Einion Clud must have been a grandson of Einion Clud ap Madog

        76.  Gwyn ap Trahaearn ap Madog, born c. 1265

Harl 1975, 151 cites "Gwyn ap Trahaearn". We suggest that Trahaearn was a son of Madog ap Trahaearn ap Gruffudd Goch.  Bartrum attached Gwyn to Trahaearn ap Gruffudd Goch, but admits 2 generations are missing in his construction

59.  Hywel ap Madog ap Trahaearn, born c. 1240

He married Gwenllian (1255) ferch Dafydd (1225) ap Rhys (1195) ap Hywel (1165) ap Trahaearn (1135) ap Gwgan (1105) ap Gwgan Blaidd Gwyrdd (1075) ap Bleddyn (1045) ap Maenyrch (1015), which Bleddyn was king of Brycheiniog.  They had a son:

Alis ferch Llewelyn ap Gwilym, born c. 1305.  She married Meurig Twpa (1295) ap Maredudd Goch (1265) ap Maredudd Ddu (1235) ap Maredudd (1200) ap Einion (1170) ap Cynfelyn (1140) ap Dolphyn (1110) ap Rhiwallon (1075) of Arwystli, descended from the same ancestors as Cadwgan of Nannau

Harl 1973, 12 cites "Alis ferch Llewelyn ap Gwilym ap Adda " married "Meurig Twpa ap Maredudd Goch ap Generys"  It identifies Generys as the mother of Maredudd Goch, thus the consort of Maredudd Ddu

Pen 287, 1911 says "Llewelyn ap Gwilym ap Adda of Ceri" married "Efa ferch Cadwgan Wenwys".But in fact, Efa was a daughter of Gwenwys ap Gruffudd IV, a man even Bartrum confuses with Cadwgan Wenwys ap Dafydd.

63.  Hywel ap Adda ap Madog, born c. 1265

His obit date is unknown, but he married Gwerfyl (1280) ferch Einion (1250) ap Llewelyn (1220) ap Meilyr (1190) of Gregynog descended from Meilyr Gryg of Tregynon Parish in Cydewain.  They had 2 sons and a daughter:

Bodleian Add C177, 7 says "Annes ferch Hywel ap Adda ap Madog" married "Llewelyn ap Gruffudd ap Maredudd" from "Einion ap Cynfelyn".  That source omits Gruffudd Ddu, the son of Gruffudd

64.  Gwilym ap Maredudd ap Madog, born c. 1270

His wife and obit date are unknown, but he had a son:

Llewelyn ap Gwilym ap Maredudd, born c. 1305.  He had a dauighter:
Efa ferch Llewelyn ap Gwilym, born c. 1335.  She married Maredudd (1320) ap Hywel (1285) ap Adda (1257) ap Madog (1228) ap Maredudd (1200) ap Maelgwn II (1172)  See #105  below

Bodleian Add C177, 7 cites "Efa ferch Llewelyn ap Gwilym ap Maredudd ap Madog ap Adda" married "Maredudd ap Hywel  ap Adda "

65.  This number is unused

Harl 1973, 154 cites "Sioned ferch Madog ap Einion of Ceri" married Dafydd ap Madog ap Maredudd" while Vis Shropshire, 286 extends him as "Madog ap Maredudd ap Maelgwn" Chronologically, this would be Maelgwn II ap Maelgwn

We suggest the only "Einion of Ceri" who fits this timeline is Einion ap Einion Hen ap Madog

67.  Llewelyn ap Madog Fychan ap Madog, born c. 1275

His wife and obit date is unknown, but he had a son and a daughter:

        83.  Gruffudd ap Llewelyn ap Madog Fychan. born c. 1305
Angharad ferch Llewelyn ap Madog Fychan, born c. 1310.  She married Hywel (1300) ap Tudor (1270) ap Einion Fychan (1235) ap Einion (1205) ap Meurig (1175) ap Ieuaf (1145) ap Gronwy (1115) ap Ifor (1085) ap Idnerth (1050) ap Cadwgan (1020) ap Elystan Glodrydd

Dwnn i, 314 & 316 cite "Angharad ferch Llewelyn ap Madog Fychan" married "Hywel ap Tudor ap Einion Fychan ap Einion (omits Meurig) ap Ieuaf ap Gronwy ap Ifor ap Idnerth ap Cadwgan ap Elystan Glodrydd".  Pen 128, 723b corrects this ancestry as "Einion ap Meurig ap Ieuaf ap Gronwy"

His wife and obit date are unknown, but he had a son:

        84.  Madog ap Maredudd ap Madog, born c. 1285

Vis Shropshire, 286 and Harl 1973, 154 cite "Madog  ap Maredudd ap Maelgwn" as the father of a Dafydd ap Madog.  Both omit two generations on the timeline; the correct ancestry of that Dafydd is "ap Madog ap Maredudd ap Madog ap Maredudd ap Maelgwn II"

69.  Adda ap Madog ap Maredudd, born c. 1257

His wife and obit date are unknown, but he had 5 sons:

Adda ap Madog ap Maredudd also had two daughters:

Pen 128, 814a cites "Efa Ddu ferch Rhys ap Adda" married "Maredudd ap Llewelyn ap Gruffudd Llwyd ap Llewelyn Foelgrwn"    Harl 1973, 86 cites "Efa ferch Rhys ap Adda" married "Gwilyn ap Idris ap Alo"

Harl 1982, 139 cites "Annes ferch Adda ap Madog" married "Madog ap Owain ap Meurig ap Pasgen"

Dwnn i, 299, 305 & 317 cite "Sioned ferch Adda ap Madog of Ceri" married "Llewelyn Fychan ap Llewelyn ap Gruffudd ap Gwyn ap Gronwy ap Einion ap Seisyllt"

Gwilym Goch ap Morgan ap Morgan, born c. 1435

Dwnn i, 199 cites "Gwilym Goch ap Morgan ap Morgan ap Madog ap Einion Fychan descended from Llewelyn ap Einion Clud"".  It is merely our belief that connects this Einion Fychan with this Einion ap Gruffudd ap Madog

76.  Gwyn ap Trahaearn ap Madog, born c. 1265

His wife and obit date are unknown, but he had a son:

       100.  Hywel Fain ap Hywel ap Llewelyn, born c. 1315

Every citation for men descended from this c.1315 Hywel Fain ends with Hywel Fain.  Both other men named Hywel Fain in this extended family are cited as sons of a man named Hywel.  We suggest there was a Hywel ap Llewelyn ap Hywel who was the brother of Dafydd ap Llewelyn ap Hywel, which brother also had a grandsson named Hywel Fain

80.  Dafydd Gymro ap Llewelyn ap Hywel, born c. 1275
