PEDIGREE OF CYNDDELW GAM OF YSTRAD ALUN
By Darrell Wolcott
This pedigree, which extends down to about
the year 1400, uses the same sources cited by Peter Bartrum in his "Welsh Genealogies - AD300-1300 but assembles the data
in a chronologically consistent manner, leaving no time gaps nor any of the anachronisms found in his charts. It includes
families we believe belong here which were not connected by Bartrum. Names are spelled according to our preferred orthography
and all birthdate estimates have been rounded to the nearest year ending with 0 or 5.
For every child and every marriage
connection claimed, our sources for the data follow the narrative in red type. In many cases, there are more sources
than shown, but if one source extends the person's ancestry back more generations than all others, only that source is cited.
In the majority of cases, no single source cites more than 3 or 4 generations so it is necessary to "connect" the ancestry
by reference to distinctly separate sources, and this joining of sources may occur more than once to reach back to a well-known
ancestor. Each such connection introduces the opportunity for error due to the abundance of same-named men found within
the body of Welsh pedigree manuscripts. Our constructions often differ from those presented by Bartrum, but all maintain
a sound chronological timeline. Where particular problems exist, they are fully discussed and the reasons for choosing
our construction are given. There can be no certainty that our choices, or anyone else's, are absolutely correct.

Index of names
GENERATION 1:
1. Cynddelw Gam ap Elgudy, born c. 880
As a young man, Cynddelw accompanied his father in the
engagement which cleared Danish squatters from Tegeingl and the Clwyd valley. His uncorrected vision required him to
squint when viewing anything from close up and earned him the nickname "Gam". Born in mid-Powys near Deuddwr, he settled
in Ystrad Alun on lands granted to his father by Selyf ap Brochwel, king of Powys, around the year 900/905. His wife
is unknown, but he had a son:
2. Cynwrig
ap Cynddelw Gam ap Elgudy
ABT 1c and HLG 5a cite "Cynddelw Gam ap Elgudy ap
Gwrysnadd" as father of Cynwrig
GENERATION 2:
2. Cynwrig ap Cynddelw Gam ap Elgudy, born c. 915.
He inheirited his father's lands, which included Ystrad
Alun, Dyffryn Clwyd and a sizaeable manor near Rhuddlan in Tegeingl. His wife is unknown, but he had 3 sons:
3. Gweirydd
ap Cynwrig ap Cynddelw Gam
4. Marchen
ap Cynwrig ap Cynddelw Gam
5. Pyll ap
Cynwrig ap Cynddelw Gam
Pen. 131, 286 cites "Gweirydd ap Cynddelw Gam" while
HLG 5a cites "Cynwrig ap Cynddelw Gam". Both the chronology and Peter Bartrum suggest the correct form is "Gweirydd
ap Cynwrig ap Cynddelw Gam"
ABT 1c cites "Marchen ap Cynwrig ap Cynddelw Gam"
ABT 6i cites "Pyll ap Cynwrig ap Cynddelw Gam"
GENERATION 3:
3. Gweirydd ap Cynwrig ap Cynddelw Gam, born c. 945
He received Ystrad Alun and a part of the Tegeingl manor,
electing to reside at the latter. His wife is unknown, but he had a son:
6. Coel ap
Gweirydd ap Cynwrig
Pen. 131, 286 cites "Coel ap Gweirydd ap Cynddelw
Gam" which lacks one generation to be chronologically satisfactory. Bartrum would make Gweirydd the son of Cynwrig ap
Cynddelw Gam and we concur
4. Marchen ap Cynwrig ap Cynddelw Gam, born c. 950
He received much of Dyffryn Clwyd as his share
of his father's lands. His wife is unknown, but he had a son:
7. Rhys
ap Marchen ap Cynwrig
ABT 1c cites "Marchen ap Cynwrig ap Cynddelw Gam"
as father of Rhys
5. Pyll ap Cynwrig ap Cynddelw Gam, born c. 950
He received lands in the north of Dyffryn Clwyd and
the remainder of the manor near Rhuddlan. His wife is unknown, but he had a son:
8. Gwair
ap Pyll ap Cynwrig
ABT 6i cites "Pyll ap Cynwrig ap Cynddelw Gam " as
father of Gwair
GENERATION 4:
6. Coel ap Gweirydd ap Cynwrig, born c. 975
He inheirited Ystrad Alun and the manor called Bryn
near Rhuddlan. After serving king Llewelyn ap Seisyllt (c. 980), he married a sister (c. 990) of that Llewelyn
and had 2 sons:
9. Llewelyn
ap Coel ap Gweirydd
10. Ithel ap Coel
ap Gweirydd
Pen. 131, 286 and Pen. 128, 186 cite "Coel ap Gweirydd"
as father of Llewelyn Aurdorchog
The marriage of Coel to a sister of King Llewelyn ap Seisyllt is our suggestion;
since Coel's son served as penteulu for Gruffudd ap Llewelyn ap Seisyllt and since that position was reserved by law to a
near relative of the king, we posit the men were first cousins
No source gives the ancestry of this Ithel; we suggest he was a younger brother
of Llewelyn Aurdorchog.
7. Rhys ap Marchen ap Cynwrig, born c. 985
His wife is unknown, but later in life he had a single
daughter:
Gwenllian ferch Rhys ap Marchen, born c. 1025. She inheirited his lands in Dyffryn Clwyd and married Morien (c. 1015) ap
Morganeau (c. 985) ap Gwerystan (c. 950), a first cousin of Rhiwallon and Bleddyn ap Cynfyn ap Gwerystan. Their son,
Eunydd (c. 1045), served in Bleddyn's warband c. 1070-75
ABT 1c cites "Gwenllian ferch Rhys ap Marchen ap Cynwrig"
as mother of Eunydd
Dwnn ii, 83 & 355 cite "Gwenllian ferch Rhys ap Marchen" married "Morien
ap Morgeneu ap Gwerystan ap Gwaethfoed" and was mother to Eunydd
8. Gwair ap Pyll ap Cynwrig, born c. 985
His wife is unknown, but he had a daughter:
Afandreg ferch Gwair ap Pyll, born c. 1020. She was about 13 when Iago (c. 1005) ap Idwal (c. 975) ap Elisedd (c.
945) of Gwynedd invaded Powys and took Rhuddlan from its interim king, Cynfyn ap Gwerystan. While the more senior Powys
noblemen went into the mountains of Ial to avoid capture and to protect their young king-to-be, Gruffudd ap Llewelyn, Gwair
struck a truce with Iago and gave Afandreg to be his wife. She was to be widowed 6 years later when Gruffudd emerged
as king of Powys and killed Iago. She and her young son, Cynan (c. 1035), resided at Iago's manor of Aberffraw in Anglesey.
ABT 6i cites "Afandreg ferch Gwair ap Pyll ap Cynwrig"
as the mother of Cynan ap Iago, thus the wife of Iago
GENERATION 5:
9. Llewelyn ap Coel ap Gweirydd, born c. 1005
He was sent at age 14 to serve at the court of King
Llewelyn ap Seisyllt, and remained at court when that man died in 1023. Cynfyn ap Gwerystan married the king's widow
to become the step-father of young Gruffudd. Installed as the interim king of Powys, Cynfyn brought to court with him
three young daughters by a first wife. About 1033, Llewelyn married one of those daughters, Efa (c. 1020). When
Gruffudd ap Llewelyn became old enough to stake a kingship claim, he chose Llewelyn ap Coel as his senior official...the penteulu
or leader of his warband. It was during that service he donned the gold torc which was the ancient symbol of a Celtic
battle leader, and became better known as Llewelyn Aurdorchog. As a reward for his services, he was granted the commote
of Ial located just south of Ystrad Alun. He and Efa had 4 sons:
11. Llewelyn
Fychan ap Llewelyn Aurdorchog
12. Ithel
Hen ap Llewelyn Aurdorchog
13. Ednowain
ap Llewelyn Aurdorchog
Rhys ap Llewelyn Aurdorchog, born c. 1045. He had a single daughter, Gwenllian born c. 1080, who married Ithel (c. 1075) ap
Eunydd of Dyffryn Clwyd (c. 1045)
Cae Cyriog Ms and B.M. Add. 9864 cite "Llewelyn Aurdorchog
ap Coel ap Gweirydd" married "Efa ferch Cynfyn ap Gwerystan". Harl. 1972, 135 and Harl. 1977, 226 incorrectly emended
that to "Efa ferch Bleddyn ap Cynfyn" by mis-dating Llewelyn Aurdorchog one generation forward.
Dwnn i, 308 cites "Llewelyn Aurdorchog" as father to Llewelyn Fychan
No sources cite the ancestry of Ithel Hen; Dwnn ii, 300, note 3 calls him "of
the tribe of Ial". Chronologically, he fits as a son of Llewelyn Aurdorchog; most pedigrees call Ithel Felyn such a
son, but only our construction fits both men
Dwnn ii, 243 cites "Llewelyn Aurdorchog" as father to Owain Aurdorchog but Cae
Cyriog Ms and others call this son Ednowain Aurdorchog.
Pen. 287, 181 cites "Gwenllian ferch Rhys ap Llewelyn Aurdorchog" married "Ithel
ap Eunydd'
All other children attributed to Llewelyn Aurdorchog by various pedigrees actually
belong to other (later) men in the family named Llewelyn; these include Ithel Felyn, Iorwerth, Idris, Gwgan and Dolffyn,
plus a lady named Nest
10. Ithel ap Coel ap Gweirydd, born c. 1007
He also served at the courts of Llewelyn
ap Seisyllt and Cynfyn ap Gwerystan, and about 1035 married another of the daughters of Cynfyn named Nest (c. 1022).
Like his older brother, he had grown to manhood as both first-cousin and foster brother of Gruffudd ap Llewelyn. When
the latter became king in 1039, he named Ithel as his pencynydd or chief huntsman in charge of the care and training of the
hounds. A Welsh king of that era had only two things he was passionate about: fighting and hunting. Thus the two sons
of Coel became Gruffudd's top officials in each of those pursuits. Ithel and Nest resided at the patrimonial manor of
Bryn near the castle at Rhuddlan. For his services to the king, he was granted lands in Pennant Melangell in the commote
of Mochnant. He and Nest had a son:
14. Ednowain ap
Ithel ap Coel
The ancestry of Ithel is nowhere given; see the paper
"Ithel of Bryn in Powys" elsewhere on this site for the suggestion he was a younger brother of Llewelyn Aurdorchog
HLG 2c cites "The mother of Ednowain ap Ithel of Bryn in Powys and of Pennant
Melangell was Nest ferch Cynfyn ap Gwerystan"
GENERATION 6:
11. Llewelyn Fychan ap Llewelyn Aurdorchog, born c. 1035
Succeeding to the Lordship of Ial and Ystrad
Alun after the death of his father, he cemented his friendship with the clan of Elystan Glodrydd in Fferlys which lay south
of Powys by marrying Annes (c. 1050), daughter of Cadwgan (c. 1020) ap Elystan (c. 985). His lands were a portion
of "north Wales" for which the Norman Robert of Rhuddlan paid 40 pounds annually to rule. This Robert did not personally
involve himself in every-day affairs in Wales, but approved sub-rulers who rendered to him those rents and fees normally paid
to a Welsh king. Llewelyn Fychan paid 40 shillings rent in 1086 for Ial when its population was said to be 33 men and
2 priests. He and Anne had 4 sons and 2 daughters:
15.
Ithel Felyn ap Llewelyn Fychan ap Llewelyn Aurdorchog
16.
Idris ap Llewelyn Fychan ap Llewelyn Aurdorchog
17.
Iorwerth ap Llewelyn Fychan ap Llewelyn Aurdorchog
18.
Rhys Goch ap Llewelyn Fychan ap Llewelyn Aurdorchog
Nest ferch Llewelyn Fychan, born c. 1065. She married Uchdryd (c. 1055) ap Edwin of Tegeingl (c. 1020), leader
of the warband of Cadwgan ap Bleddyn ap Cynfyn
Alison ferch Llewelyn Fychan, born c. 1070. She married Maredudd (c. 1055) ap Cynan (c. 1014) ap Idwal (c.
975), a priest at the household of Cadwgan ap Bleddyn and the younger brother of the Gruffudd ap Cynan who tried and failed
to claim the kingship of Gwynedd in 1075 and 1081.
Montgomeryshire Collections vol vii, pp 54 cites "Llewelyn
Fychan ap Llewelyn Aurdorchog married Agnes (Annes) ferch Cadwgan ap Elystan Glodrydd"
HLG 5b cites "Ithel Felyn of Ial ap Llewelyn Aurdorchog" which omits Llewelyn
Fychan, but that source also omits both the father and grandfather of Llewelyn Aurdorchog
Pen. 131, 286; Pen. 128, 75b & 186b; and Pen. 139(1), 82 cite "Idris
ap Llewelyn Aurdorchog" but the family descended from Idris clearly dates him to the generation of grandchildren of Llewelyn
Aurdorchog.
Pen. 127, 63; Pen. 128, 272a; Pen. 176, 84; and Pen 139(1), 123 cite "Iorwerth
ap Llewelyn Aurdorchog" but he also occurs 2 generations after Llewelyn Aurdorchog
Dwnn i, 308 cites "Rhys Goch ap Llewelyn Fychan ap Llewelyn Aurdorchog"
Pen. 287, 291 cites "Nest ferch Llewelyn Aurdorchog married Uchdryd ap Edwin
ap Gronwy"; Uchdryd was born c. 1050/55 making his wife actually the daughter of Llewelyn Fychan.
Cedwyn Ms reproduced in Montgomeryshire Collections, vol x, pp 21 cites "Alson
ferch Llewelyn Fychan ap Llewelyn Aurdorchog married Maredudd ap Cynan"
By moving the birth of Llewelyn Aurdorchog forward one generation to call him
the father of Ithel Felyn, several of his grandchildren were cast as his children in most medieval pedigrees.
12. Ithel Hen ap Llewelyn Aurdorchog, born c. 1036
His wife is unknown, but he had a son:
19. Llewelyn ap Ithel Hen ap Llewelyn Aurdorchog
Dwnn ii, 300 note 3 cites "Ithel Hen of Ial" as the
father of Llewelyn
13. Ednowain ap Llewelyn Aurdorchog, born c. 1040
He served as penteulu for Bleddyn ap Cynfyn, who
was his mother's half-brother. During that service as leader of King Bleddyn's warband, he earned the "Aurdorchog" nickname
his father had borne. His wife is unknown, but he had 2 sons:
20.
Dafydd Ysgyd Aur ap Ednowain Aurdorchog
21.
Gwrydyr ap Ednowain Aurdorchog
Dwnn ii, 243 cites "Owain Aurdorchog" as father of
Dafydd Ysgyd Aur
HLG 5a cites "Ednowain ap Llewelyn Aurdorchog" as father of Gwrydyr
14. Ednowain ap Ithel ap Coel, born c. 1040
He married Generys (c. 1055) ferch Rhys Sais
(c. 1025) ap Ednyfed (c. 995) of Maelor and had a son:
22.
Gwrgeneu ap Ednowain ap Ithel
HLG 2c & d cites "the mother of Gwrgeneu ap Ednowain
ap Ithel was Generys ferch Rhys Sais of Maelor", while HLG 12a extends her ancestry to "Rhys Sais of Maelor ap Ednyfed ap
Llywarch Gam ap Llyddocca ap Tudor Trevor"
GENERATION 7:
15. Ithel Felyn ap Llewelyn Fychan ap Llewelyn Aurdorchog, born c. 1065.
He succeeded his father as Lord of Ial and Ystrad Alun about 1094 and married Lleuci (c. 1080) ferch Hwfa (c. 1045) ap
Brochwel (c. 1010) ap Bledrus (c. 980) of Anglesey. While one late manuscript cites Marged and Susanna as his daughters,
no marriage for either is mentioned. But Ithel Felyn did have a son:
23.
Hwfa ap Ithel Felyn ap Llewelyn Fychan
Harl. 1972, 137v and Harl. 1977, 38v & 124 cite
"Ithel Felyn ap Llewelyn Aurdorchog" (omitting Llewelyn Fychan) married "Lleuci ferch Hwfa ap Brochwel ap Bledrus y Moelwyn".
Pen. 287, 497 cites Marged and Susanna as unmarried daughters of Ithel Felyn,
ladies unknown to earlier manuscripts
16. Idris ap Llewelyn Fychan ap Llewelyn Aurdorchog, born c. 1070.
His wife is unknown, but he had a son:
24.
Ithel ap Idris ap Llewelyn Fychan
Pen. 131, 186 and Pen. 128, 75b & 186b cite "Idris
ap Llewelyn Aurdorchog (omitting Llewelyn Fychan)
as father of Ithel
17. Iorwerth ap Llewelyn Fychan ap Llewelyn Aurdorchog, born c. 1070
His wife is unknown, but he had a son:
25.
Llewelyn ap Iorwerth ap Llewelyn Fychan
Pen. 127, 63 and Pen. 128, 272a cite "Iorwerth ap
Llewelyn Aurdorchog" but the subsequent families place Iorwerth 2 generations after Llewelyn Aurdorchog
18. Rhys Goch ap Llewelyn Fychan ap Llewelyn Aurdorchog, born c. 1075
He married Lleuci (c. 1090) ferch Llewelyn
(c. 1060) ap Meilyr Gryg (c. 1025) of Gregynog in Cydewain and settled on his wife's manor in southern Powys. It was
not unusual for younger siblings who held patrimonial lands now ruled by an older brother to seek residence elsewhere.
Rhys Goch leased out his lands in Ystrad Alun and Ial to move south. He and Lleuci had a son:
26.
Einion ap Rhys Goch ap Llewelyn Fychan
Montgomeryshire Collections, vol vii, pp 55 cites
"Rhys Goch ap Llewelyn Fychan ap Llewelyn Aurdorchog" married "Lleuci ferch Llewelyn ap Meilyr Gryg and was the father of
Einion"
19. Llewelyn ap Ithel Hen ap Llewelyn Aurdorchog, born c. 1065
His wife is unknown, but he had a son:
27.
Madog ap Llewelyn ap Ithel Hen
Dwnn ii, 300 note 3 cites "Llewelyn ap Ithel Hen"
as father of Madog
20. Dafydd Ysgyd Aur ap Ednowain Aurdorchog, born c. 1065
His footwear was decorated with gold braid
and he was known as Dafydd with the gold boots. His wife is unknown, but he had a son:
28.
Idnerth ap Dafydd Ysgyd Aur ap Ednowain Aurdorchog
Dwnn ii, 243 cites "Dafydd Ysgyd Aur ap Owain Aurdorchog"
as father of Idnerth
21. Gwrydyr ap Ednowain Aurdorchog, born c. 1070
His wife is unknown, but he had a son:
29.
Bledrys ap Gwrydyr ap Ednowain Aurdorchog
HLG 5a cites "Gwrydyr ap Ednowain ap Llewelyn Aurdorchog"
as father of Bledrys
22. Gwrgeneu ap Ednowain ap Ithel, born c. 1080
He married Gwledyr (c. 1100) ferch
Seisyllt (c. 1070) ap Gwrgi (c. 1040) of castell Caereinion and only had 2 daughters:
Arianrodd ferch Gwrgeneu ap Ednowain, born c. 1110. She married Collwyn (c. 1095) ap Moreiddig (c. 1060) ap Rhys
(c. 1030) of Penllyn and was the grandmother of Rhiryd Flaidd ap Gwrgeneu ap Collwyn, Lord of Penllyn
Genelles ferch Gwrgeneu ap Ednowain, born c. 1115. She married the noted bard Gwalchmei (c. 1000) ap Meilyr (c. 970).
HLG 2e cites "Gwledyr ferch Seisyllt ap Gwrgi" as
mother of Genelles ferch Gwrgeneu ap Ednowain" thus wife of Gwrgeneu
HLG 2b cites "Genelles ferch Gwrgeneu ap Ednowain ap Ithel of Bryn" as the mother
of Einion ap Gwalchmei ap Meilyr, thus the wife of Gwalchmei
Pen. 139(1), 39 cites "the mother of Gwrgeneu ap Collwyn was a daughter of Gwrgeneu
ap Ednowain of Bryn"; Harl. 1977, 245 names the lady "Aneiwrodd" which is probably "Arianrodd"
GENERATION 8:
23. Hwfa ap Ithel Felyn ap Llewelyn Fychan, born c. 1095
He succeeded his father as Lord of Ial and
Ystrad Alun and married Yslani (c. 1110) ferch Iago (c. 1075) ap Gruffudd (c.1041) ap Cynan (c. 1015) ap Idwal (c. 975).
They had 4 sons:
30.
Ithel y Gwion ap Hwfa ap Ithel Felyn
31.
Caswallon ap Hwfa ap Ithel Felyn
32.
Hywel Foel ap Hwfa ap Ithel Felyn
Gronwy ap Hwfa ap Ithel Felyn, born c. 1130. He had a son:
Iorwerth ap Gronwy ap Hwfa, born c. 1160, whose daughter:
Tangwystl ferch Iorwerth ap Gronwy, born c. 1195, married Llewelyn ap Dolffyn ap Iorwerth. See #71 below
HLG 5b cites "the wife of Hwfa ap Ithel Felyn was
Yslani ferch Gruffudd ap Cynan" but ABT 5b (which also cites this marriage) adds that Yslani was the sister of Iago ap Gruffudd
ap Cynan by a common mother. But that Iago can be dated c. 1075 and almost certainly was the father, not sister, of
Yslani.
Pen. 127, 64 and Pen. 128, 272a cite "Tangwystl ferch Iorwerth Swdrgrin ap Gronwy
ap Hwfa ap Ithel Felyn" married "Llewelyn ap Dolffyn ap Iorwerth"
24. Ithel ap Idris ap Llewelyn Fychan, born c. 1105
His wife is unknown, but he had a son:
33. Tudor ap Ithel ap Idris
Pen. 131, 286 and Pen. 128, 186b cite "Ithel ap Idris"
as father of Tudor
25. Llewelyn ap Iorwerth ap Llewelyn Fychan, born c. 1100
A number of genealogists confuse this man
with Llewelyn Aurdorchog, appending his children to that earlier man. His wife is unknown, but he had 3 sons and a daughter:
34. Dolffyn ap Llewelyn ap Iorwerth
35. Iorwerth ap Llewelyn ap Iorwerth
36. Gwgan ap Llewelyn ap Iorwerth
Nest
ferch Llewelyn ap Iorwerth, born c. 1135. She married Llewelyn (c. 1130) ap Madog (c. 1095) ap Maredudd (c. 1065) ap
Bleddyn (c. 1025) ap Cynfyn (c. 990)
Pen. 127, 63 & 129; Pen. 128, 272a; Harl. 1973,
26v; and Harl. 1977, 268 all mistake this Llewelyn for Llewelyn Aurdorchog. Perhaps he also bore that nickname, but
clearly dates nearly 100 years later than the first man of that name.
Harl. 1977, 268 cites "Nest ferch Llewelyn" married "Llewelyn ap Madog" but corruptly
misidentifies both spouses. Bartrum's attempt to chart Llewelyn ap Madog is absurdly anachronistic, making Madog 3
generations older than his "father"
26. Einion ap Rhys Goch ap Llewelyn Fychan, born c. 1105
His wife is cited as Sian ferch Einion (c.
1110) ap Seisyllt (c. 1075) of Mathafarn, but such a lady would be a full generation too young for such a marriage.
Perhaps she was a sister of Einion ap Seisyllt whose relationship was altered to daughter by those medieval genealogists who
dated Llewelyn Aurdorchog one generation later and claimed he was the father of Ithel Felyn. Raised in southern Powys
where his father had moved, Einion had a son:
37.
Iorwerth ap Einion ap Rhys Goch
Montgomeryshire Collections, vol vii, pp 55 cites
"Einion ap Rhys Goch ap Llewelyn Fychan" married "Sian ferch Einion ap Seisyllt". Either this marriage is fiction, or
Sian was actually a sister of Einion ap Seisyllt
27. Madog ap Llewelyn ap Ithel Hen, born c. 1095
His wife is unknown, but he had a son:
38.
Iorwerth ap Madog ap Llewelyn
Dwnn ii, 300 note 3 cites "Madog ap Llewelyn ap Ithel
Hen" as father of Iorwerth
28. Idnerth ap Dafydd Ysgyd Aur ap Ednowain Aurdorchog, born c. 1095
His wife is unknown, but he had a son:
39.
Bradwen ap Idnerth ap Dafydd Ysgyd Aur
Dwnn ii, 243 cites "Idnerth ap Dafydd Ysgyd Aur" as
father of Bradwen. However, Dwnn ii, 284 cites the father of Bradwen as "Idnerth ap Edryd", a man born c. 1040 or 2 generations
too early to be his father. Pen. 234, 30 makes the father of Bradwen "Mael ap Bleydud ap Morud", a man born c. 1050.
We have opted for the only version of his ancestry which works chronologically.
29. Bleddri ap Gwrydyr ap Ednowain Aurdorchog, born c. 1100
His wife is unknown but he had a son:
Cadwgan ap Bleddri ap Gwrydyr, born c. 1130. He had 4 sons of whom nothing is known:
Rhys ap Cadwgan ap Bleddri, born c. 1160
Arthen ap Cadwgan ap Bleddri, born c. 1160
Meilyr ap Cadwgan ap Bleddri, born c. 1165
Tegwared ap Cadwgan ap Bleddri, born c. 1165
HLG 5a cites "Rhys and Arthen and Meilyr and Tegwared"
as sons of "Cadwgan ap Bleddri ap Gwrydyr ap Ednowain ap Llewelyn Aurdorchog"
GENERATION 9:
30. Ithel y Gwion ap Hwfa ap Ithel Fychan, born c. 1125
Called simply "Y Gwion" in most pedigrees,
we think the nickname was corrupted from "y wyrion" or "the grandson". It was rare in that era for a child to be born
during the life of his grandfather, but when such a child was given the same name as his grandfather, the nickname was added
to distinguish between them...as well as to call attention to the rare feat of even having a living grandfather. Since
the grandfather of this man was Ithel Felyn, we suggest his birth name was Ithel the grandson. He succeeded his father
as Lord of Ial and Ystrad Alun but during his lifetime lost much of that land and his title to Gruffudd Maelor ap Madog ap
Maredudd, king of north Powys. He married Lleuci (c. 1125) ferch Maredudd (c. 1090) ap Cadwgan (c. 1055) ap Bleddyn
(c. 1025); they had a 2 sons and a daughter:
40.
Cadwgan Goch ap Ithel Y Gwion ap Hwfa
41.
Cynddelw ap Ithel Y Gwion ap Hwfa
Nest
ferch Ithel Y Gwion ap Hwfa, born c. 1160. She married Radfarch (c. 1150) ap Alser (c. 1115) ap Gwrgi (c. 1080) ap Hedd
(c. 1050) ap Alunog (c. 1020) descended from Tudwal Gloff ap Rhodri Mawr.
Pen. 129, 111; Pen. 127, 132 and Pen. 128, 148a cite
"Y Gwion ap Hwfa ap Ithel Felyn" as the father of Cadwgan Goch
Pen. 287, 385 cites "Y Gwion ap Hwfa ap Ithel Felyn" married "Lleuci ferch Maredudd
ap Cadwgan", while Pen. 129, 45 extends her ancestry to "Maredudd ap Cadwgan ap Bleddyn"
Dwnn ii, 278 cites "Cynddelw ap Ithel Felyn" but he was born c. 1155 or 3 generations
after Ithel Felyn. We think the Ithel who was father to Cynddelw was the one often called "Y Gwion" who does fit chronologically
Pen 276, 556 cites "Nest ferch Y Gwion ap Hwfa" married "Rhahawd Fach ap Alser
ap Gwrgi" while Pen. 128, 258b calls him "Radfach ap Alser ap Gwrgi". HLG 10b extends his ancestry as "Gwrgi ap Hedd
ap Alunog"
31. Caswallon ap Hwfa ap Ithel Felyn, born c. 1130
His wife is unknown, but he had a 3 sons:
42.
Iorwerth ap Caswallon ap Hwfa
43.
Maredudd ap Caswallon ap Hwfa
44.
Bleddyn ap Caswallon ap Hwfa
Pen. 131, 52; Pen. 129, 84; Pen. 127, 136; and Pen.
128, 213b cite "Caswallon ap Hwfa ap Ithel Felyn" as father of Iorwerth
Pen. 287, 504 cites "Caswallon ap Hwfa ap Ithel Felyn" as father of Bleddyn
Pen. 177, 166 and Pen. 134, 69 cite Maredudd as a son of Hwfa, but he occurs
in the generation of grandsons of Hwfa. We think he was a brother of Iorwerth and Bleddyn
32. Hywel Foel ap Hwfa ap Ithel Felyn, born c. 1130
His wife is unknown, but he had two sons:
45.
Ieuaf ap Hywel Foel ap Hwfa
46.
Einion ap Hywel Foel ap Hwfa
Harl. 2299 cites "Hywel Foel ap Hwfa ap Ithel Felyn"
as father of Ieuaf. Other sources call Ieuaf "Ieuan" and incorrectly make him a son of Hwfa
Pen. 177, 45 and Pen. 134, 367 cite "Hywel Foel ap Hwfa" as father of Einion
33. Tudor ap Ithel ap Idris, born c. 1140
His wife is unknown, but he had a son:
47.
Tangwel ap Tudor ap Ithel
Pen. 129, 286 and Pen. 128, 186b cite "Tudor ap Ithel
ap Idris" as father of Tangwel
34. Dolffyn ap Llewelyn ap Iorwerth, born c. 1130
His wife is unknown, but he had a son:
48.
Ithel ap Dolffyn ap Llewelyn
Pen. 127, 129 and Pen. 128, 602a cite "Dolffyn ap
Llewelyn" as father of Ithel, but incorrectly call the father of Dolffyn "Llewelyn Aurdorchog"
35. Iorwerth ap Llewelyn ap Iorwerth, born c. 1135
His wife is unknown, but he had a son:
49.
Carwed ap Iorwerth ap Llewelyn
Pen. 176, 84 & 93; and Pen. 287, 510 cite "Iorwerth
ap Llewelyn" as father of Carwed, but incorrectly call the father of Iorwerth "Llewelyn Aurdorchog"
36. Gwgan ap Llewelyn ap Iorwerth, born c. 1130
His wife is unknown, but he had a son:
50.
Cyfnerth ap Gwgan ap Llewelyn
Harl. 1973, 26v cites "Gwgan ap Llewelyn" as father
of Cyfnerth, but incorrectly call the father of Gwgan "Llewelyn Aurdorchog"
37. Iorwerth ap Einion ap Rhys Goch, born c. 1140
He married Sian (c. 1155) ferch Dafydd Fychan
(c. 1125) ap Dafydd (c. 1095) ap Ieuan (c. 1065) ap Trahaearn (c. 1035) ap Caradog (c. 1005). They had a son:
51.
Trahaearn ap Iorwerth ap Einion
PF v, pp 120 cites "Iorwerth ap Einion ap Rhys
Goch" married "Dafydd Fychan ap Dafydd", as does the entry of Walcot of Bitterly Court in Burke's Landed Gentry. Both
incorrrectly add "of Bacheldre" mistaking him with another Dafydd Fychan born c. 1300. His correct ancestry is cited
in Dwnn i, 274 & 308, although those citations are corrupt beyond Ieuan ap Trahaearn. Trahaearn ap Iorwerth married
a lady of the same family.
38. Iorwerth ap Madog ap Llewelyn, born c. 1125
His wife is unknown, but he had a son:
52.
Dolffyn ap Iorwerth ap Madog
Dwnn ii, 300 note 3 cites "Iorwerth ap Madog ap Llewelyn"
as father of Dolffyn
39. Bradwen ap Idnerth ap Dafydd Ysgyd Aur, born c. 1125
His wife is unknown, but he had a son and
2 daughters:
53.
Ednowain ap Bradwen ap Idnerth
Arddun ferch Bradwen ap Idnerth, born c. 1155. She married Madog (c. 1140) ap Iorwerth (c. 1110) ap Madog (c. 1080)
ap Ednowain Bendew II (c. 1050). We suspect this "Ednowain Bendew" was actually Owain ap Edwin of Tegeingl.
Isabel ferch Bradwen ap Idnerth, born c. 1160. She married a Seisyllt of Meirionydd who is otherwise unknown.
Dwnn ii, 243 cites "Bradwen ap Idnerth ap Dafydd Ysgyd
Aur" as father of Ednowain
Pen. 287, 271 cites "Arddun ferch Bradwen" married "Madog ap Iorwerth", as do
Dwnn ii, 304 & 325. Neither source extends either ancestry further back, but there are no other known men in
Welsh pedigrees named Bradwen and the chronology of our construction fits both spouses.
Harl. 1973, 70 & 77 cite "Isabel ferch Bradwen" married "Seisyllt of Meirionydd".
The ancestry of the latter is uncertain; Bartrum equates him to the father of Einion ap Seisyllt, the latter born
c. 1110. A husband of Isabel should occur c. 1150 so this identification fails chronologically
GENERATION 10:
40. Cadwgan Goch ap Ithel Y Gwion ap Hwfa, born c. 1160.
He married Nesta (c. 1175) ferch Hywel (c.
1145) ap Ithel (c. 1115) ap Madog (c. 1085) ap Rhiryd (c. 1055) ap Bleddyn (c. 1025) ap Cynfyn (c. 990) They had a son:
54.
Hwfa ap Cadwgan Goch ap Ithel Y Gwion
Harl. 2299 cites "Cadwgan Goch ap Y Gwion ap Hwfa"
married "Nesta ferch Hywel ap Ithel ap Madog ap Rhiryd ap Bleddyn". Other sources omit Madog from her ancestry
and fail chronologically
41. Cynddelw ap Ithel Y Gwion ap Hwfa, born c. 1155
His wife is unknown, but he had a son:
55.
Einion ap Cynddelw ap Ithel Y Gwion
Pen. 136, 77; Pen. 139(1), 71; and Dwnn ii, 278
call him "Cynddelw ap Ithel Felyn" but he must have been the son of this Ithel three generations later. Bartrum's
chart simply shows 3 generations missing from Ithel Felyn to Cynddelw
42. Iorwerth ap Caswallon ap Hwfa, born c. 1160.
His wife is unknown but he was living in 1202
and had 3 sons:
56.
Rhys ap Iorwerth ap Caswallon
57.
Cynwrig ap Iorwerth ap Caswallon
58.
Caswallon ap Iorwerth ap Caswallon
Pen. 131, 52; Pen. 129, 84; and Pen 127, 136 cite
"Iorwerth ap Caswallon ap Hwfa" as father of Cynwrig
This Iorwerth ap Caswallon was a witness to a 1202 grant of lands to Valle Crucis
Abbey
43. Maredudd ap Caswallon ap Hwfa, born c. 1155
His wife is unknown, but he had a son:
59.
Gruffudd ap Maredudd ap Caswallon
Pen. 177, 166 and Pen. 134, 69 cite the father of
Gruffudd as "Maredudd ap Hwfa" but Bartrum's chart shows one generation missing with that construction.
44. Bleddyn ap Caswallon ap Hwfa, born c. 1160
His wife is unknown, but he had a son:
60.
Cynwrig ap Bleddyn ap Caswallon
Pen. 287, 504/506 cite "Bleddyn ap Caswallon ap Hwfa"
as father of Cynwrig
45. Ieuaf ap Hywel Foel ap Hwfa, born c. 1160
His wife is unknown, but he had a son:
61.
Hywel y Gwion Gam ap Ieuaf ap Hywel Foel
Harl. 2299 cites "Ieuaf ap Hywel Foel ap Hwfa" as
father of Y Gwion Gam. We suggest "y gwion" means "the grandson" and that he bore the same birthname as his grandfather,
i.e. Hywel.
Pen. 176, 48 makes Y Gwion Gam the son of "Ieuan ap Hwfa", a chronologically
impossible construction. No other sources say Hwfa had a son named either Ieuan or Ieuaf.
46. Einion ap Hywel Foel ap Hwfa, born c. 1165
His wife is unknown, but he had a son:
62.
Madog ap Einion ap Hywel Foel
Pen. 139(1), 87 and Pen. 177, 45 cite "Einion ap Hywel
Foel ap Hwfa" as father of Madog
47. Tangwel ap Tudor ap Ithel, born c. 1170
His wife is unknown, but he had a son:
63.
Meilyr ap Tangwel ap Tudor
Pen 131, 286 and Pen. 128, 186b cite "Tangwel ap Tudor
ap Ithel" as father of Meilyr
48. Ithel ap Dolffyn ap Llewelyn, born c. 1165
His wife is unknown, but he had a son:
64.
Deheuwynt ap Ithel ap Dolffyn
Pen. 127, 129 and Pen. 128, 602a cite "Ithel ap Dolffyn
ap Llewelyn" as father of Deheuwynt, but mistakenly add "Aurdorchog" to Llewelyn
49. Carwed ap Iorwerth ap Llewelyn, born c. 1165
His wife is unknown, but he had a son:
65.
Iorwerth ap Carwed ap Iorwerth
Pen. 176, 93 cites "Carwed ap Iorwerth ap Llewelyn"
as father of Iorwerth, but mistakenly adds "Aurdorchog" to Llewelyn
50. Cyfnerth ap Gwgan ap Llewelyn, born c. 1160
His wife is unknown, but he had a son:
66.
Meilyr ap Cyfnerth ap Gwgan
Harl. 1973, 26v cites "Cyfnerth ap Gwgan ap Llewelyn"
as father of Meilyr, but mistakenly adds "Aurdorchog" to Llewelyn
51. Trahaearn ap Iorwerth ap Einion, born c. 1170
He served as a captain in the warband of
Gwenwynwyn, king of south Powys, for which service he was granted the manor of Garthmyl in Cydewain. He married Dyddgu
(c. 1180) ferch Maredudd (c. 1145) ap Robert (c. 1110) ap Llywarch (c. 1070) ap Trahaearn (c. 1035) ap Caradog (c. 1005). Trahaearn
ap Caradog was king of Powys and Gwynedd 1075-1081. Maredudd ap Robert ap Llywarch was Lord of Cydewain; at
his death he was succeeded by a nephew, named Maredudd ap Robert ap Robert, and it was that Maredudd whose obit is recorded
in 1244. Trahaearn and Dyddgu had 5 sons and 2 daughters:
67. Iorwerth
y Gwion ap Trahaearn ap Iorwerth
68. Ieuan
ap Trahaearn ap Iorwerth
69. Ithel
Dalfrith ap Trahaearn ap Iorwerth
70. Maredudd
ap Trahaearn ap Iorwerth
Meurig ap Trahaearn ap Iorwerth, born c. 1205. He had a daughter:
Sioned
ferch Meurig ap Trahaearn, born c. 1235. She married Gwilym (c. 1220) ap Aaron (c. 1190) ap Rhys (c. 1160) ap Bleddri
(c. 1130) ap Rhys (c. 1095) ap Bleddri (c. 1065) ap Cadifor Fawr (c. 1030) of Blaen Cuch in the commote of Emlyn in Dyfed
Alison ferch Trahaearn ap Iorwerth, born c. 1205. She married Cadwaladr (c. 1195) ap Llewelyn Fychan (c. 1160) ap Llewelyn
(c. 1130) ap Einion (c. 1095) ap Llewelyn (c. 1060) ap Meilyr Gryg (c. 1025) of Gregynon in Cydewain descended from Brochwel
Ysgithrog.
Sian ferch Trahaearn ap Iorwerth, born c. 1210. She married Madog (c. 1205) ap Trahaearn (c. 1175) ap Gruffudd Goch
(c. 1145) ap Gruffudd Fele (c. 1115) ap Madog (c. 1085) ap Idnerth (c. 1050) ap Cadwgan (c. 1020) ap Elystan
Glodrydd of Fferlys.
Dwnn i, 111 cites "Trahaearn of Garthmyl ap Iorwerth"
married "Dyddgu ferch Maredudd ap Robert, Lord of Cydewain". Pen. 131, 126 extends her ancestry to "Maredudd ap Robert
ap Llywarch ap Trahaearn ap Caradog".
Dwnn i, 114 & 148 cite "Sioned ferch Meurig ap Trahaearn ap Iorwerth" married
"Gwilym ap Aaron ap Rhys ap Bleddri". Pen. 129, 299 & 304 extend his ancestry to "Rhys ap Bleddri ap Cadifor Fawr"
but Bartrum's chart shows that to be chronologically impossible. Our work finds Gwilym occurs in a cousin line, the
son of Aaron ap Rhys ap Bleddri ap Rhys ap Bleddri, not of the Sir Aaron ap Rhys ap Bleddri born c. 1130
Dwnn ii, 300 cites "Alison ferch Trahaearn ap Iorwerth" married "Cadwaladr ap
Llewelyn Fychan ap Llewelyn ap Einion ap Llewelyn ap Meilyr Gryg". Bartrum's chart incorrectly attaches Cadwaladr
to the Llewelyn ap Meilyr Gryg of c. 1190. Bartrum, like all others, confuse the Meilyr Gryg of c. 1190 with the
Meilyr Gryg of c. 1025 since the same 5-name string begins with both men.
Bodleian Add. C.177, 3 cites "Sian ferch Trahaearn ap Iorwerth" married "Madog
ap Trahaearn ap Gruffudd Goch", while Pen. 131, 65;Pen. 127, 137 & Pen. 128, 830a extend his ancestry to "Madog ap Trahaearn
ap Gruffudd Goch ap Gruffudd Fele ap Madog ap Idnerth ap Cadwgan ap Elystan Glodrydd". However, Pen. 133, 61 makes him
"Madog ap Trahaearn ap Gruffudd Fele ap Llewelyn ap Madog ap Llewelyn ap Cadwgan ap Elystan". Either works chronologically.
52. Dolffyn ap Iorwerth ap Madog, born c. 1155
His wife is unknown, but he had a son:
71.
Llewelyn ap Dolffyn ap Iorwerth
Pen 127, 63 and Pen. 128, 272a cite "Dolffyn ap Iorwerth"
as father of Llewelyn; they attach Iorwerth directly to Llewelyn Aurdorchog, while Dwnn ii, 300 note 3 says this was
Dolffyn ap Iorwerth ap Madog descended from Ithel Hen
53. Ednowain ap Bradwen ap Idnerth, born c. 1155
He married first, Marged (c. 1165) ap Cynan
(c. 1130) ap Owain Gwynedd (c. 1100) For his services as penteulu for Dafydd ap Owain Gwynedd, he was granted most
of the commote of Tal-y-bont in Meirionydd.
He married secondly, Sian (c. 1160) ap Philip
(c. 1120) ap Uchdryd of Cyfeiliog (c. 1085) ap Uchdryd (c. 1055) ap Edwin of Tegeingl (c. 1020).
Ednowain was later recognized as one of the 15
Founders of Noble Tribes of Gwynedd as the last in a long line of men who served as battle leaders for kings of Powys and
Gwynedd. Although he had a number of children, it is appropriate that a new pedigree should be cast to begin with him
and we shall not continue with his family in this narrative.
Dwnn i, 39 cites "Ednowain ap Bradwen" married "Marged
ferch Cynan ap Owain Gwynedd"
Dwnn ii, 239 cites "Wife of Ednowain ap Bradwen was Sian ferch Philip ap Uchdryd
of Cyfeiliog"
Dwnn ii, 243 cites "Ednowain ap Bradwen ap Idnerth ap Dafydd Ysgyd Aur".
Other sources derive Bradwen from Mael ap Bleddyn and make him a brother of Peredur ap Mael, a man born c. 1080. But
Bradwen was born about 75 years later than Mael and 45 years later than Peredur. A third group of sources derive Bradwen
from Idnerth ap Edryd ap Aeddan, a man born c. 1040 and chronologically impossible. Bartrum rejected the Dwnn citation
simply because he dates Llewelyn Aurdorchog a full generation too late, but it is the only ancestry which works chronologically.
GENERATION 11:
54. Hwfa ap Cadwgan Goch ap Ithel Y Gwion, born c. 1190
His wife is unknown, but he had 2 sons:
72.
Cadwgan y Gwion ap Hwfa ap Cadwgan Goch
73.
Jonas ap Hwfa ap Cadwgan Goch
All sources omit one of the repeating 3-name strings
in "Cadwgan Goch ap Gwion ap Hwfa ap Cadwgan Goch ap Gwion ap Hwfa ap Ithel Felyn", but the two wives assigned to Cadwgan
Goch occur 3 generations apart. Furthermore, the family descended from Jonas ap Hwfa point to a birthdate c. 1225 for
him, and Pen. 128, 216a & 638a call him "Jonas ap Hwfa ap Ithel Felyn" which is chronologically impossible.
55. Einion ap Cynddelw ap Ithel Y Gwion, born c. 1185
His wife is unknown, but he had a son:
74. Llewelyn ap Einion ap Cynddelw
Pen. 136, 77; Pen. 139(1), 71; and Pen. 139(2), 233
cite "Einion ap Cynddelw ap Ithel Felyn", but Bartrum's charts show 3 generations missing in that construction. We make
his grandfather to be Ithel y Gwion, not Ithel Felyn. Those sources make Llewelyn the son of this Einion
56. Rhys ap Iorwerth ap Caswallon, born c. 1195
His wife is unknown, but he had a son:
75. Owain Wynn ap Rhys ap Iorwerth
Dwnn ii, 300 cites "Rhys ap Iorwerth" as father of
Owain Wynn.
57. Cynwrig ap Iorwerth ap Caswallon, born 1195
His wife is unknown, but he had a son:
76. Gronwy ap Cynwrig ap Iorwerth
Pen. 128, 147b & 272b; Pen 132, 191 cite "Cynwrig ap Iorwerth ap Caswallon"
Pen 131, 52; Pen. 129, 84; Pen. 127, 136 cite "Cynwrig ap Iorwerth" as the father
of Gronwy
58. Caswallon ap Iorwerth ap Caswallon, born c. 1190
He married Annes (c. 1205) ferch Cowryd
(c. 1175) ap Cadfan (c. 1140) of Dyffryn Clwyd. They had a son:
77. Iorwerth ap Caswallon ap Iorwerth
All sources omit one pair of "Iorwerth ap Caswallon" from this family, Bartrum
simply indicating 2 generations are missing in his chart. He omits Annes altogether since she didn't fit the single
Caswallon he lists.
PF ii, pp 347 (this work cites the Cae Cyriog Ms as it's source) says that "Annest
ferch Cowryd ap Cadfan" married "Caswallon ap Hwfa". We emend that to "Caswallon ap Iorwerth ap Caswallon ap Hwfa",
restoring the two generations known to be missing from the pedigree.
59. Gruffudd ap Maredudd ap Caswallon, born c. 1185
His wife is unknown, but he had a son:
78. Heilyn ap Gruffudd ap Maredudd
Pen. 176, 334; Pen. 134, 69; Pen. 177, 166 & Pen.
135.293 cite "Gruffudd ap Maredudd" as the father of Heilyn. They incorrectly make Maredudd a son of Hwfa, omitting
Caswallon.
60. Cynwrig ap Bleddyn ap Caswallon, born c. 1195
His wife is unknown, but he had a son:
79. Madog Goch ap Cynwrig ap Bleddyn
Pen. 287, 506 cites "Cynwrig ap Bleddyn ap Caswallon"
as the father of Madog Goch
61. Hywel Y Gwion Gam ap Ieuaf ap Hywel Foel, born c. 1190
His wife is unknown, but he had a son:
80. Ithel ap Hywel Y Gwion Gam ap Ieuaf
Pen. 176, 48 cites "Y Gwion Gam ap Ieuan" as the father
of Ithel. As shown earlier, other sources say the father of Y Gwion Gam was Ieuaf, not Ieuan.
62. Madog ap Einion ap Hywel Foel, born c. 1200
His wife is unknown, but he had 2 sons:
81. Llewelyn ap Madog ap Einion
82. Hwfa ap Madog ap Einion
Pen. 287, 500 and Pen. 139(1), 87 cite "Madog ap Einion
ap Hywel Foel ap Hwfa" as the father of Llewelyn.
63. Meilyr ap Tangwel ap Tudor, born c. 1205
His wife is unknown, but he had 2 sons:
83. Madog Goch ap Meilyr ap Tangwel
84. Madog Heddwch ap Meilyr ap Tangwel
Pen. 131, 286 cites "Meilyr ap Tangwel ap Tudor" as
the father of Madog Goch
Pen. 128, 186b cites "Meilyr ap Tangwel ap Tudor" as the father of Madog Heddwch
64. Deheuwynt ap Ithel ap Dolffyn, born c. 1200
His wife is unknown, but he had a son:
85. Pyll ap Deheuwynt ap Ithel
Pen. 127, 129 cites "Deheuwynt ap Ithel ap Dolffyn"
as the father of Pyll
65. Iorwerth ap Carwed ap Iorwerth, born c. 1195
He was granted the manor of Llanelidan by the
Bishop of Bangor. His wife is unknown but he had a son:
86. Hywel ap Iorwerth ap Carwed
Pen. 176, 93 cites "Iorwerth ap Carwed ap Iorwerth"
as the father of Hywel
66. Meilyr ap Cyfnerth ap Gwgan, born c. 1190
His wife is unknown, but he had a son:
87. Trahaearn ap Meilyr ap Cyfnerth
Harl. 1973, 26 cites "Meilyr ap Cyfnerth ap Gwgan" as the father of Trahaearn
67. Iorwerth Y Gwion ap Trahaearn ap Iorwerth, born c. 1200
He married Jane (c. 1215) daughter of Sir
Peter Corbet (c. 1185) son of Sir Robert Corbet (c. 1155) son of William Corbet (c. 1120) son of William Corbet (c. 1090) son
of Roger Corbet (c. 1060) son of Hugh Corbet of Pais de Caux (c. 1030), this Hugh having come from Normandy as a captain
serving under Sir Roger of Montgomery at the battle of Hastings in 1066. The Corbet family held lands called Caus in
Shropshire, serving its patron when the latter became Earl of Shrewsbury. Iorwerth "the grandson" and Jane had a
son and a daughter:
88.
Iorwerth Fychan ap Iorwerth Y Gwion ap Trahaearn
Efa ferch Iorwerth Y Gwion ap Trahaearn, born c. 1230.
She married Henwyn (c. 1215) ap Ithel Aur Gleddf (c. 1180) ap Hywel (c. 1150) ap Gruffudd (c. 1115) ap Ednyfed (c. 1085) ap
Idnerth (c. 1050) ap Cadwgan (c. 1020) ap Elystan Glodrydd (c. 990)
Dwnn i, 111 cites "Iorwerth ap Trahaearn ap Iorwerth" of Garthmyl married "Jane,
daughter of Sir Peter Corbet". We believe Sir Peter was the eldest son of Sir Robert Corbet of Caus (obit 1222) and,
having no son, was succeeded as Lord of Caus by his brother, Sir Robert II. The early part of the Corbet pedigree is
in some disarray, but the 1623 Visitation of Shorpshire pp. 133/139 cites "Robert Corbet son of Robert son of William
son of Roger son of Corbet the Norman" which is one generation too short for the family which follows. Other sources
mention a William son of William son of Roger son of Corbet the Norman.
Dwnn i, 297 cites "Efa ferch Iorwerth ap Trahaearn of Garthmyl" married "Henwyn
ap Ithel Aur Gledde ap Hywel ap Gruffudd ap Ednyfed ap Idnerth ap Cadwgan ap Elystan Glodrydd"
Harl. 1973, 119 cites "Gwion ap Trahaearn" as the father of Iorwerth. Since
this Gwion was actually Iorwerth y Gwion, his son was Iorwerth Fychan
68. Ieuan ap Trahaearn ap Iorwerth, born c. 1200
His wife is unknown, but he had a daughter:
Efa ferch Ieuan ap Trahaearn, born c. 1230. She
married Einion (c. 1215) ap Ieuan (c. 1185) ap Iorwerth Goch (c. 1150) ap Ystrwyth (c. 1115) ap Ednowain (c. 1085) ap Gwrydr
(c. 1050) ap Dyfnant (c. 1015) ap Meurig (c. 985) ap Iddon (c. 955) ap Iddig (c. 925) ap Llywarch (c. 890) ap Llofan (c. 860)
ap Cilmin Droed Ddu (c. 830) ap Cadrod (c. 795) which Cadrod was a brother of Merfyn Frych who usurped the kingship of Gwynedd
in 816.
Dwnn ii, 147 cites "Efa ferch Ieuan ap Trahaearn ap Iorwerth" married "Einion
ap Ieuan ap Iorwerth Goch ap Ystrwyth ap Ednowain ap Gwrydr ap Dyfnant ap Iddon ap Iddig ap Llywarch ap Llofan ap Cilmin "while
HLG 8a inserts "Meurig" as the father of Dyfnant.
69. Ithel Dalfrith ap Trahaearn ap Iorwerth, born c. 1200
He settled on patrimonial lands in Ystrad
Alun which his ancestors had leased out since moving to south Powys. His wife is unknown, but he had a son and a daughter:
89. Llewelyn ap Ithel Dalfrith ap Trahaearn
Marged ferch Ithel Dalfrith ap Trahaearn, born c. 1235. She married Hwfa (c. 1225) ap Iorwerth (c. 1195) ap Gruffudd
of Bersham (c. 1165) ap Ieuaf (c. 1130) ap Ninniaw (c. 1095) descended from Tudor Trevor.
Pen. 127, 136; Pen. 129, 111; Pen. 127, 133 cite "Ithel
Dalfrith ap Trahaearn Goch" and no sources extend his ancestry. His lands in Ystrad Alun suggest he descended from Llewelyn
Aurdorchog, and some writers incorrectly add "Goch" to Trahaearn ap Iorwerth of Garthmyl...also descended from Llewelyn Aurdorchog.
The chronology fits our making Ithel Dalfrith a son of that Trahaearn, and Ithel was a favored name in that extended family.
The same sources cited next above make Llewelyn a son of Ithel Dalfrith
Pen. 128, 147b cites "Marged ferch Ithel Dalfrith" married "Hwfa ap Iorwerth
ap Ieuaf", a construction which is 1 generation deficient. Pen. 127, 131a and 137b identify a "Hwfa ap Iorwerth ap Gruffudd
ap Ieuaf ap Ninniaw" who fits chronologically, and we believe the marriage citation omitted Gruffudd from the ancestry of
the Hwfa who married Marged.
70. Maredudd ap Trahaearn ap Iorwerth, born c. 1200
As the youngest son, he inherited
the manor house at Garthmyl. His wife is unknown, but he had a son:
90.
Gruffudd ap Maredudd ap Trahaearn
Montgomeryshire Collections, vii, 55 cites "Maredudd ap Trahaearn ap Iorwerth"
as the ancestor of the Jones family of Garthmyl
Harl. 1973, 28 cites "Maredudd ap Trahaearn" as the father of Gruffudd
71. Llewelyn ap Dolffyn ap Iorwerth, born c. 1185
He married Tangwystl (c. 1195) ferch Iorwerth
(c. 1160) ap Gronwy (c. ) ap Hwfa (c. 1095). See #23 above. They had 2 sons and 2 daughters:
91. Ithel ap Llewelyn ap Dolffyn
Efa
ferch Llewelyn ap Dolffyn, born c. 1215. She married Eunydd of Gwerngwy (c. 1200) ap Gwrgeneu (c. 1165) ap Heilyn (c.
1135) ap Eunydd of Trefalun (c. 1105) ap Heilyn (c. 1075) ap Eunydd of Dyffryn Clwyd (c. 1045)
Sissely ferch Llewelyn ap Dolffyn, born c. 1215. She married Llewelyn (c. 1200) ap Moreiddig (c. 1165) ap Moreiddig
(c. 1125) ap Sandde Hardd (c. 1095) of Mortyn.
Tangwystl ferch Llewelyn ap Dolffyn, born c. 1220. She married Iorwerth (c. 1215) ap Cynwrig Ddewis Herod (c.
1185) ap Cowryd Perfarch (c. 1150) ap Iarddur (c. 1115) ap Llewelyn Meudwy(c. 1085) ap Hedd (c. 1050) ap Alunog (c. 1020)
descended from Tudwal Gloff ap Rhodri Mawr.
Arch Cam 1932, pp 242 cites "Efa ferch Llewelyn ap
Dolffyn" married "Eunydd (ap) Gwerngwy", which inserts an "ap" between Eunydd and his residence in Gwerngwy, Dyffryn Clwyd.
He is called Eunydd Gwerngwy in Pen. 128, 398a.
Montgomeryshire Collections vii, pp 54 cites "Sissely ferch Llewelyn ap Dolffyn"
married "Llewelyn ap Moreiddig ap Sandde Hardd". The families descended from Llewelyn ap Moreiddig all occur one generation
later than those descended from Hywel ap Moreiddig ap Sandde Hardd and we suggest there was a Moreiddig ap Moreddig ap Sandde
Hardd
Pen. 127, 63 & 64 cite "Tangwystl ferch Llewelyn ap Dolffyn" married "Iorwerth
ap Cynwrig Ddewis Herod ap Cowryd".
GENERATION 12:
72. Cadwgan Y Gwion ap Hwfa ap Cadwgan Goch, born c. 1220
His wife is unknown, but he had 2 sons:
92. Cadwgan Goch ap Cadwgan Y Gwion ap Hwfa
93. Cadwgan Frych ap Cadwgan Y Gwion ap Hwfa
Pen. 128, 139a cites "Gwion ap Hwfa" as the father of Cadwgan Goch. The
family which follows dates this "Gwion" to c. 1220 and we make him the son of Hwfa ap Cadwgan Goch ap Ithel y Gwion ap Hwfa
ap Ithel Felyn.
73. Jonas ap Hwfa ap Cadwgan Goch, born c. 1225
His wife is unknown, but he had 2 sons:
94. Ithel ap Jonas ap Hwfa
95. Madog ap Jonas ap Hwfa
Dwnn ii, 228 cites "Jonas ap Hwfa" as the father of Ithel
Pen. 128, 216a cites "Jonas ap Hwfa" as the father of Madog
All sources mistake Hwfa, father of Jonas, with Hwfa ap Ithel Felyn by omitting
3 generations. Jonas was a brother of (Cadwgan) y Gwion ap Hwfa ap (Ithel) y Gwion ap Hwfa ap Ithel Felyn.
74. Llewelyn ap Einion ap Cynddelw, born c. 1215
His wife is unknown, but he had a son:
96. Iorwerth ap Llewelyn ap Einion
Pen. 136, 77 cites "Llewelyn ap Einion ap Cynddelw" as the father of Iorwerth
75. Owain Wynn ap Rhys ap Iorwerth, born c. 1230
His wife is unknown, but he had 2 sons:
97.
Owain Fychan ap Owain Wynn ap Rhys
98. Rhys Lloyd ap Owain Wynn ap Rhys
Dwnn ii, 300 cites "Owain Wynn ap Rhys ap Iorwerth" as the father of Owain Fychan
76. Gronwy ap Cynwrig ap Iorwerth, born c. 1225
His wife is unknown, but he had a son:
99. Madog ap Gronwy ap Cynwrig
Harl. 1972, 78; Pen. 131, 52; Pen. 129, 84; Pen 127, 136 cite Madog as a son
of "Gronwy ap Cynwrig" and the three Peniarth manuscripts extend his ancestry to "Gronwy ap Cynwrig ap Iorwerth"
77. Iorwerth ap Caswallon ap Iorwerth, born c. 1220
He married Gwenhwyfar (c. 1230) ferch Cuhelyn
(c. 1200) ap Rhun (c. 1170) ap Einion Efell (c. 1135); Einion Efell was a base son of Madog ap Maredudd ap Bleddyn
ap Cynfyn. They had a son:
100.
Cynwrig ap Iorwerth ap Caswallon
PF ii, 348 (citing the Cae Cyriog Ms) says "Gwenhwyfar ferch Cuhelyn ap Rhun
ap Einion Efell" married "Iorwerth ap Caswallon ap Hwfa", omitting one pair of "Iorwerth ap Caswallon" from the pedigree.
Bartrum's charts omit Gwenhwyfar since she didn't fit timewise in his flawed construction.
PF v, 91 (citing BM Add 9864) cites the same marriage, but also confuses this
Iorwerth ap Caswallon with the earlier same-named man who was living in 1202
78. Heilyn ap Gruffudd ap Maredudd, born c. 1220
His wife is unknown, but he had a son:
101. Heilyn Fychan ap Heilyn ap Gruffudd
Pen. 176, 334; Pen. 139(1), 82; Pen. 134, 69; Pen.
177. 166; Pen. 135, 293 cite "Heilyn ap Gruffudd ap Maredudd" as the father of Heilyn Fychan
79. Madog Goch ap Cynwrig ap Bleddyn, born c. 1225
His wife is unknown, but he had a son:
102. Ieuan ap Madog Coch ap Cynwrig
Pen. 287, 506 cites "Madog Goch ap Cynwrig ap
Bleddyn" as the father of Ieuan
80. Ithel ap Hywel Y Gwion Gam ap Ieuaf, born c. 1220
His wife is unknown, but he had 4 sons:
103. Iorwerth ap Ithel ap Hywel Y Gwion Gam
104. Ieuan ap Ithel ap Hywel Y Gwion Gam
105. Llewelyn Y Stwg ap Ithel ap Hywel Y Gwion Gam
106.
Gwilym ap Ithel ap Hywel Y Gwion Gam
Cardiff 3.8, 157 cites "Ithel ap Hywel Foel" as the
father of Iorwerth. That construction is 2 generations deficient, and we think it was Hywel, the grandson of Hywel Foel which
is meant, i.e. "Ithel ap Hywel y Gwion Gam ap Ieuaf ap Hywel Foel"
Pen. 134, 147 cites "Ieuan ap Ithel to Hwfa"; Bartrum incorrectly assumed that
Hwfa ap Cynddelw was meant and places Ieuan's family on chart Hwfa 1.
Pen. 176, 48 and Pen, 287, 498 cite "Ithel ap Y Gwion Gam" as the father of Gwilym
81. Llewelyn ap Madog ap Einion, born c. 1235
His wife is unknown, but he had a son:
107. Iolyn ap Llewelyn ap Madog
Pen. 287, 500; Pen. 139(1), 87 cite "Llewelyn ap Madog
ap Einion" as the father of Iolyn
82. Hwfa ap Madog ap Einion, born c. 1230
His wife is unknown, but he had a son:
108. Hywel ap Hwfa ap Madog
See #174 below; this branch of the family contains
a repeating 4-name string of "Madog ap Einion ap Hywel ap Hwfa" ap "Madog ap Einion ap Hywel Foel ap Hwfa" ap Ithel Felyn.
83. Madog Goch ap Meilyr ap Tangwel, born c. 1235
His wife is unknown, but he had a son:
109. Meilyr ap Madog Goch ap Meilyr
Harl. 1977, 123v cites this line of the family as
"Hywel Goch ap Rhiwallon ap Meilyr ap Tangwel", skipping from Meilyr ap Madog Goch to Meilyr ap Tangwel. Bartrum's chart
shows 2 generations missing in that construction.
84. Madog Heddwch ap Meilyr ap Tangwel, born c. 1240
He married Tangwystl (c. 1250) ferch Madog (c.
1210) ap Einion (c. 1180) ap Madog (c. 1150) ap Gwylog (c. 1120) ap Eginyr (c. 1085) ap Urien (c. 1055) ap Eginyr (c. 1025)
ap Lles (c. 995) ap Idnerth Benfras of Maesbrook (c. 960). They had a 2 sons:
110. Dafydd ap Madog Heddwch ap Meilyr
111. Ithel ap Madog Heddwch ap Meilyr
Harl. 1971, 180 cites "Madog Heddwch ap Meilyr ap
Tangwel" married "Tangwystl ferch Madog ap Gwylog" which skips from Madog ap Einion to Madog ap Gwylog. Her ancestry
is continued in Pen. 135, 285 and Pen. 128, 87b as "Gwylog ap Eginyr ap Lles ap Idnerth Benfras", which skip from Eginyr ap
Urien to Eginyr ap Lles. Together, these citations omit 4 generations. No extant pedigrees cast for the family
of Idnerth Benfras are, as they stand, even close to being chronologically stable.
Dwnn i, 322 cites "Madog Heddwch ap Meilyr ap Tangwel" as the father of Dafydd
Pen. 287, 509 cites "Madog Heddwch ap Meilyr ap Tangwel" ap the father of Ithel
85. Pyll ap Deheuwynt ap Ithel, born c. 1230
His wife is unknown, but he had a son:
112. Madog ap Pyll ap Deheuwynt
Pen. 127, 129 cites "Pyll ap Deheuwynt ap Ithel" as the father of Madog
86. Hywel ap Iorwerth ap Carwed, born c. 1230
His wife is unknown, but he had a son:
113. Gwyn ap Hywel ap Iorwerth
Pen. 176, 84 & 93; Pen 287, 510 cite "Hywel ap Iorwerth ap Carwed" as the
father of Gwyn
87. Trahaearn ap Meilyr ap Cyfnerth, born c. 1220
His wife is unknown, but he had a son:
114. Gwgan ap Trahaearn ap Meilyr
Harl. 1973, 26 cites "Trahaearn ap Meilyr ap Cyfnerth" as the father of Gwgan
88. Iorwerth Fychan ap Iorwerth Y Gwion ap Trahaearn, born c. 1230
His wife is unknown, but he had 3 sons:
115. Trahaearn Goch ap Iorwerth Fychan ap Iorwerth Y Gwion
116. Ieuan Goch ap Iorwerth Fychan ap Iorwerth Y Gwion
117. Rhys ap Iorwerth Fychan ap Iorwerth Y Gwion
118.
Ieuan Fychan ap Iorwerth Fychan ap Iorwerth Y Gwion
Harl. 1973, 119 cites "Ieuan ap Iorwerth ap Gwion"; since Gwion was actually
Iorwerth y Gwion, we read this as "Ieuan ap Iorwerth Fychan ap Iorwerth Y Gwion". We added the "Fychan" to this Ieuan since
he appears to have had a brother called Ieuan Goch. It is possible both these Ieuans were a single person, but we date
them 5 years apart.
Dwnn i, 21 cites "Ieuan Goch ap Iorwerth ap Trahaearn" but the family which follows
chronologically requires Ieuan Goch to occur in the 3rd generation after Trahaearn, so we make him a son of Iorwerth Fychan
ap Iorwerth.
Comments of the other sons shown for Iorwerth Fychan will follow the entry for
those sons.
89. Llewelyn ap Ithel Dalfrith ap Trahaearn, born c. 1230
His wife is unknown, but he had a son:
119. Llywarch
ap Llewelyn ap Ithel Dalfrith
120.
Einion ap Llewelyn ap Ithel Dalfrith
Pen. 127, 36 and Pen. 176, 123 & 221 cite "Llewelyn
ap Ithel Dalfrith" as the father of Llywarch
Pen. 129, 111; Pen. 127, 133; Pen. 128, 156a & 612a cite "Llewelyn ap Ithel
Dalfrith" as the father of Einion.
Llywarch ap Llewelyn had a son, Einion, who is confused with his brother Einion
but the two men named Einion are found in wholly different sources and are not merely the result of a name dropped from one
set of manuscripts as Bartrum supposed.
90. Gruffudd ap Maredudd ap Trahaearn, born c. 1240
His wife is unknown, but he had a son:
121. Iorwerth ap Gruffudd ap Maredudd
Harl. 1973, 28 cites "Gruffudd ap Maredudd ap Trahaearn"
Pen. 287, 423 cites the heiress of Garthmyl who married an ancestor of the Jones
family of Garthmyl as "Marged ferch Ieuan Fwyndeg ap Ieuan ap Dafydd ap Iorwerth". Iorwerth fits chronologically as
a son of Gruffudd ap Maredudd ap Trahaearn. Our construction follows possession of the manor at Garthmyl from Maredudd
ap Trahaearn down to Marged, heiress of Garthmyl
91. Ithel ap Llewelyn ap Dolffyn, born c. 1220
His wife is unknown, but he had a son:
122. Philip ap Ithel ap Llewelyn
Pen. 176, 362 and Pen. 177, 45 cite "Ithel ap Llewelyn ap Dolffyn" as the father
of Philip
GENERATION 13:
92. Cadwgan Goch ap Cadwgan Y Gwion ap Hwfa, born c. 1250
He married Dyddgu (c. 1260) ferch Ithel (c. 1225)
ap Hywel (c. 1195) ap Moreiddig (c. 1165) ap Moreiddig (c. 1125) ap Sandde Hardd of Mortyn (c. 1095). They had a son
and a daughter:
123.
Cadwgan Ddu ap Cadwgan Goch ap Cadwgan Y Gwion
Gwen ferch Cadwgan Goch ap Cadwgan Y Gwion, born c. 1280. She married Ednyfed Goch (c. 1265) ap Cynwrig (c. 1230) ap
Gruffudd Fychan (c. 1200) ap Gruffudd (c. 1165) ap Einion (c. 1135) ap Ednyfed of Broughton (c. 1100) ap Cynwrig (c. 1065)
ap Rhiwallon (c. 1030) descended from Tudor Trevor.
Pen. 128, 139a cites "Cadwgan Goch ap Gwion ap Hwfa" married "Dyddgu ferch Ithel
ap Hywel ap Moreiddig", but this cannot be Hywel ap Moreiddig ap Sandde Hardd. We suggest Moreiddig ap Sandde had a
son also named Moreiddig, as several family pedigrees point to a Moreiddig born c. 1165 descended from Sandde Hardd.
Pen. 128, 139a also cites "Gwen ferch Cadwgan Goch ap Gwion" married "Ednyfed
Goch ap Cynwrig ap Gruffudd Fychan", while Pen. 131, 54 extends his ancestry as "Cynwrig ap Gruffudd Fychan ap Gruffudd
ap Einion ap Ednyfed ap Cynwrig ap Rhiwallon"
Pen. 129, 111 and Pen. 127, 132 cite "Cadwgan Goch ap Gwion" as the father of
Cadwgan Ddu"
93. Cadwgan Frych ap Cadwgan Y Gwion ap Hwfa, born c. 1255
His wife is unknown, but he had a son:
124. Madog ap Cadwgan Frych ap Cadwgan Y Gwion
Pen. 128, 906a cites "Cadwgan Frych ap Cadwgan Goch ap Gwion" as the father of
Madog. But the ensuing family dates Cadwgan Frych to c. 1255 and he must have been the brother of Cadwgan Goch, not
his son.
94. Ithel ap Jonas ap Hwfa, born c. 1255
His wife is unknown, but he had a son:
125. Madog ap Ithel ap Jonas
Dwnn ii, 228 cites "Ithel ap Jonas ap Hwfa" as the father of Madog
95. Madog ap Jonas ap Hwfa, born c. 1260
His wife is unknown, but he had a son:
126. Maredudd ap Madog ap Jonas
Pen. 128, 216a cites "Madog ap Jonas ap Hwfa" as the father of Maredudd
96. Iorwerth ap Llewelyn ap Einion, born c. 1245
His wife is unknown, but he had a son:
127. Llywarch ap Iorwerth ap Llewelyn
Pen.
136, 77 cites "Iorwerth ap Llewelyn ap Einion" as the father of Llywarch
97. Owain Fychan ap Owain Wynn ap Rhys, born c. 1260
His wife is unknown, but he had a son:
128. Madog Goch ap Owain Fychan ap Owain Wynn
Dwnn ii, 300 cites "Owain Fychan ap Owain Wynn ap Rhys" as the father of Madog
Goch
98. Rhys Lloyd ap Owain Wynn ap Rhys, born c. 1265
His wife is unknown, but he resided
at Coed yr Erfed in Tegeingl and had a son:
129.
Dafydd ap Rhys Lloyd ap Owain Wynn
Dwnn i, 291 cites "Rhys Lloyd ap Rhys ap Iorwerth" as the father of Dafydd.
Based on the timeline for his descendants, we believe that citation omits Owain Wynn as the father of Rhys Lloyd
99. Madog ap Gronwy ap Cynwrig, born c. 1255
His wife is unknown, but he had a
son:
Hywel ap Madog ap Gronwy, born c. 1285. His wife is unknown, but he had a daughter:
Gwenhwyfar ferch Hywel ap Madog, born c. 1315. She married Hywel (c. 1300) ap Ithel Goch (c. 1265) ap Madog (c. 1230)
ap Llewelyn (c. 1195) ap Ithel (c. 1165) ap Heilyn (c. 1135) ap Eunydd of Trefalun (c. 1105) ap Heilyn (c. 1075) ap Eunydd
of Dyffryn Clwyd (c. 1045)
Harl. 1972, 78 cites "Gwenhwyfar ferch Hywel ap Madog ap Gronwy" married "Hywel
ap Ithel Goch ap Madog ap Llewelyn ap Ithel ap Heilyn ap Eunydd" but connects that Eunydd to his grandfather, Eunydd ap Morien.
100. Cynwrig ap Iorwerth ap Caswallon, born c. 1255.
He married Janet (c. 1265), daughter
of Henry de Lacy, the latter died in 1312 and was born c. 1230. Cynwrig had a son:
130. Gronwy ap Cynwrig ap Iorwerth
Pen. 128, 139a, 213b & 252b cite "Janet daughter of Henry de Lacy" married
"Cynwrig ap Iorwerth ap Caswallon" but incorrectly assume this was Caswallon ap Hwfa
101. Heilyn Fychan ap Heilyn ap Gruffudd, born c. 1250
His wife is unknown, but he had a
son:
131.
Hwfa ap Heilyn Fychan ap Heilyn
Pen. 176, 334 cites "Heilyn Fychan ap Heilyn ap Gruffudd"
as the father of Hwfa
102. Ieuan ap Madog Goch ap Cynwrig, born c. 1260
His wife is unknown, but he had a
son:
132. Iolyn ap Ieuan ap Madog Goch
Pen 287, 506 cites "Ieuan ap Madog Goch ap Cynwrig"
as the father of Iolyn
103. Iorwerth ap Ithel ap Hywel Y Gwion Gam, born c. 1250
His wife is unknown, but he had a
son:
133. Iorwerth Fychan ap Iorwerth ap Ithel
Cardiff 3.8, 157 cites "Iorwerth ap Ithel" as the
father of Iorwerth Fychan
104. Ieuan ap Ithel ap Hywel Y Gwion Gam, born c. 1250
His wife is unknown, but he had a
son:
134. Ithel ap Ieuan ap Ithel
Bartrum incorrectly places this family on his chart Hwfa 1.
Pen. 134, 147 cites "Ieuan ap Ithel from Hwfa" as the father of Ithel.
This is the only Ieuan ap Ithel descended from a Hwfa who fits chronologically.
105. Llewelyn Y Stwg ap Ithel ap Hywel Y Gwion Gam, born c. 1250
Often called "Ystwch" (the pail or
bucket), his wife is unknown but he had 2 sons:
135. Dafydd Fychan ap Llewelyn Y Stwg ap Ithel
136.
Ieuan ap Llewelyn Y Stwg ap Ithel
Pen. 287, 499; Pen. 134, 116; Dwnn ii, 302 cite "Ystwg
ap Ithel Felyn" but he lived nearly 200 years later than the Ithel Felyn who was Lord of Ial and Ystrad Alun. We think
his father was Ithel ap Y Gwion Gam descended from Ithel Felyn, and his timeline fits well as a 4th son of that later Ithel.
Pen. 134, 116 cites "Llewelyn Stwg ap Ithel (Felyn)" as the father of Dafydd
Fychan
Dwnn ii, 302 cites "Ystwch ap Ithel (Felyn)" as the father of Ieuan, while Pen.
287, 506 calls this son "Iddon" and Cardiff 3.8, 156 calls him "Adda". We favor the earlier Dwnn spelling of "Ieuan".
106. Gwilym ap Ithel ap Hywel Y Gwion Gam, born c. 1255
His wife is unknown, but he had a
son:
137. Cadwgan ap Gwilym ap Ithel
Pen. 176, 48 and Pen 139(2), 216 cite "Gwilym ap Ithel
ap Y Gwion Gam" as the father of Cadwgan
107. Iolyn ap Llewelyn ap Madog, born c. 1265
His wife is unknown, but he had a
son:
138. Deio ap Iolyn ap Llewelyn
Pen. 287, 500 and Pen 139(1), 87 cite "Iolyn ap Llewelyn
ap Madog" as the father of Deio
108. Hywel ap Hwfa ap Madog, born c. 1260
His wife is unknown, but he had a
son:
139. Einion ap Hywel ap Hwfa
See notes with #139 below
109. Meilyr ap Madog Goch ap Meilyr, born c. 1270
His wife is unknown, but he had a
son:
140. Rhiwallon ap Meilyr ap Madog Goch
See the source note to #83 above. Only our construction
is sound chronologically
110. Dafydd ap Madog Heddwch ap Meilyr, born c. 1270
He married Dyddgu (c. 1285) ferch
Deio (c. 1255) ap Madog (c. 1225) ap Iorwerth Foel (c. 1195) ap Ieuaf Sais (c. 1165) ap Cyfnerth (c. 1135) ap Iddon (c. 1105)
ap Trahaearn (c. 1075) ap Iorwerth (c. 1040) ap Mael (c. 1010) ap Pasgen (c. 980) ap Gwyn (c. 950) ap Gruffudd (c. 915) ap
Beli (c. 885) ap Selyf (c. 850) ap Brochwel (c. 820) ap Aeddan (c. 785). The c. 980 Pasgen was the first of
4 men in the Powys Royal family to bear the same 7-generation string of names beginning with 4 different men called Brochwel
ap Aeddan. Dafydd and Dyddgu had a son:
141.
Dafydd Wele ap Dafydd ap Madog Heddwch
Harl. 1977, 123 cites "Dafydd ap Madog Heddwch ap
Meilyr" married "Dyddgu ferch Deio ap Madog ap Iorwerth Foel ap Ieuaf Sais" while Pen. 131,285 and Pen. 129, 53 extend her
ancestry to "Iorwerth Foel ap Ieauf Sais ap Cyfnerth ap Iddon ap Trahaearn Tynhearn ap Iorwerth ap Mael". While they
insert "ap" before Tynhearn, the chronology requires Trahaearn to be a grandson of Mael.
Harl. 1973, 136 cites "Dafydd ap Madog Heddwch" as the father of Dafydd Wele
111. Ithel ap Madog Heddwch ap Meilyr, born c. 1275
His wife is unknown, but he had a
son:
142.
Llewelyn ap Ithel ap Madog Heddwch
Pen. 287, 509 cites "Ithel ap Madog Heddwch ap Meilyr"
as the father of Llewelyn
112. Madog ap Pyll ap Deheuwynt, born c. 1265
His wife is unknown, but he had a
son:
143.
Einion ap Madog ap Pyll
Pen. 127, 129 cites "Madog ap Pyll ap Deheuwynt" as the father of Einion
113. Gwyn ap Hywel ap Iorwerth, born c. 1260
His wife is unknown, but he had a
son:
144. Rhiryd
Ddu ap Gwyn ap Hywel
Pen. 176, 84 & 93; Pen. 287, 510 cite "Gwyn ap Hywel ap Iorwerth" as the
father of Rhiryd Ddu
114. Gwgan ap Trahaearn ap Meilyr, born c. 1250
His wife is unknown, but he had a
son:
145. Meilyr
ap Gwgan ap Trahaearn
Harl. 1973, 26 cites "Gwgan ap Trahaearn ap Meilyr"
as the father of Meilyr
115. Trahaearn Goch ap Iorwerth Fychan ap Iorwerth Y Gwion, born c. 1260
He married Annes (c. 1270) ferch
Ieuan (c. 1235) ap Madog (c. 1205) ap Einion (c. 1170) ap Cynfelyn of Maesmawr in Arwystli(c. 1140). They had 3 sons:
146. Iorwerth
ap Trahaearn Goch ap Iorwerth Fychan
147. Madog
Lloyd ap Trahaearn Goch ap Iorwerth Fychan
PF 5, 120 cites "Agnes (Annes) ferch Ieuan ap Madog ap Einion ap Cynfelyn" married
"Trahaeaern ap Iorwerth" but incorrectly identifies him as the earlier man of that name (#51 above). Bartrum ignores
the lady because she doesn't fit chronologically with a c. 1170 Trahaearn, but matches well with this Trahaearn Goch.
Montgomeryshire Collections vii, 55 also mistakes Trahaearn Goch for the
earlier Trahaearn ap Iorwerth.
Hist. Llangurig, pp 370 also cites this marriage
116. Ieuan Goch ap Iorwerth Fychan ap Iorwerth Y Gwion, born c. 1260
His wife is unknown, but he had a
son:
148. Ieuan
Dwy ap Ieuan Goch ap Iorwerth Fychan
Dwnn i, 21 cites Ieuan Dwy as a son of Ieuan Goch, but simply calls the father
of Ieuan Goch "Iorwerth". Chronologically, only Iorwerth Fychan fits.
117. Rhys ap Iorwerth Fychan ap Iorwerth Y Gwion, born c. 1265
He resided in Mochdre in Ceri after
marrying a lady from there. His wife was Sian (c. 1280) ferch Einion Hen (c. 1252) ap Madog (c. 1224) ap Maredudd (c.
1196) ap Maelgwn II (c. 1168) ap Maelgwn (c. 1138) ap Cadwallon (c. 1110) ap Madog (c. 1080) ap Idnerth (c. 1050) ap Cadwgan
(c. 1020) ap Elystan Glodrydd (c. 990). Rhys and Sian had 2 sons:
149. Dafydd ap Rhys ap Iorwerth Fychan
150. Llewelyn ap Rhys ap Iorwerth Fychan
Dwnn i, 111 calls Rhys the son of Iorwerth ap Trahaearn ap Iorwerth. Dwnn
1, 21 makes the same error with his brother, Ieuan Goch. Both the family timeline, and that of the ladies connected
by marriage, point to a birthdate of 1260/65 for the two brothers; we believe their father was Iorwerth Fychan ap Iorwerth.
Vis. Shropshire of 1623, pp 476 says Rhys married "Jonetta filia Einani Penn
de Morcheir" while Dwnn 1, 111 calls his wife "Sian v Einion Penn Esq". Bartrum agrees that she was "of Mochdre"
in Ceri, the seat of the family descended from Elystan Glodrydd. We think Einion Hen was corrupted to Einion Pen and
then Einion Penn.
Pen. 128, 192 and Pen. 133, 208 cite the Mochdre family as "Madog ap Maredudd
ap Maelgwn ap Cadwallon ap Madog ap Idnerth", a construction 1 generation deficient to reach Madog ap Maredudd. Pen
137, 182 cites a Maelgwn ap Maelgwn ap Cadwallon, and we established he was the father of Maredudd with our work on the
Ceri family. Our making Einion Hen a son of Madog ap Maredudd is consistent with the timeline and with his cited home
at Mochdre.
118. Ieuan Fychan ap Iorwerth Fychan ap Iorwerth Y Gwion, born c.
1265
He married Alison (c. 1270) ferch
Rhiwallon Fychan (c. 1235) ap Rhiwallon Lloyd (c. 1205) ap Ithel (c. 1175) ap Rhys (c. 1140) ap Ifor (c. 1105) ap Hywel (c.
1070) ap Morgan Fychan (c. 1040) ap Morgan Hir (c. 1010) of Gwent. They had a son:
151. Madog ap Ieuan Fychan ap Iorwerth Fychan
Harl. 1973, 119 cites "Ieuan ap Iorwerth[Fychan] ap [Iorwerth y] Gwion" married
"Alison ferch Rhiwallon Fychan ap Rhiwallon Lloyd" while Pen. 131, 286 extends that to "Rhiwallon Fychan ap Rhiwallon Lloyd
ap Ithel ap Rhys ap Ifor ap Hywel ap Morgan Fychan of Ewias ap Morgan Hir of Gwent". Morgan Hir is mistaken for a son
of Iestyn ap Gwrgan, but that is impossible; he might be a brother of Gwrgan ap Ithel Ddu. Harl. 1973, 119 cites this
Ieuan as the father of Madog. We made him "Ieuan Fychan" because we believe he had an older brother called Ieuan Goch
119. Llywarch ap Llewelyn ap Ithel Dalfrith, born c. 1260
His wife is unknown, but he had a
son:
152. Einion ap Llywarch ap Llewelyn
Pen. 127, 137; Pen. 176, 123: Pen. 176, 221 cite "Llywarch
ap Llewelyn ap Ithel Dalfrith" as the father of Einion
120. Einion ap Llewelyn ap Ithel Dalfrith, born c. 1265
His wife is unknown, but he had a
son:
153. Gronwy Sais ap Einion ap Llewelyn
Pen. 129, 111; Pen 127, 133; Pen 128, 156a & 212a
cite "Einion ap Llewelyn ap Ithel Talfrith" as the father of Gronwy Sais.
This is NOT the same man as "Einion ap Llywarch ap Llewelyn ap Ithel Talfrith"
who also had a son named Gronwy Sais that is cited in Pen 127, 136; Pen, 176, 123 & 221. He is #152 below
121. Iorwerth ap Gruffudd ap Maredudd, born c. 1275
His wife is unknown, but he had a
son:
154. Dafydd ap Iorwerth ap Gruffudd
Pen. 287, 423 cites the heiress of Garthmyl as having descended from Dafydd ap
Iorwerth
122. Philip ap Ithel ap Llewelyn, born c. 1255
His wife is unknown, but he had a
son:
155. Rhys ap Philip ap Ithel
Pen. 176, 362 and Pen. 177, 45 cite "Philip ap Ithel ap Llewelyn" as the father
of Rhys
GENERATION 14:
123. Cadwgan Ddu ap Cadwgan Goch ap Cadwgan
y Gwion, born c. 1280
He married Mali (c. 1295) ferch
Sir Gruffudd Lloyd (c. 1260) ap Sir Rhys (c. 1230) ap Gruffudd (c. 1195) ap Ednyfed Fychan (c. 1165). They had 4 sons:
156. Madog ap Cadwgan Ddu ap Cadwgan Goch
157. Einion ap Cadwgan Ddu ap Cadwgan Goch
158. Dafydd Goch ap Cadwgan Ddu ap Cadwgan Goch
159. Iorwerth ap Cadwgan Ddu ap Cadwgan Goch
PF ii, 350 (citing the Golden Grove Ms) says "Cadwgan Ddu ap Cadwgan Goch ap
Gwion" married "Mali ferch Sir Gruffudd Lloyd ap Sir Rhys ap Gruffudd ap Ednyfed Fychan".
Pen. 128, 148c cites "Cadwgan Ddu ap Cadwgan Goch" as the father of Madog
Pen. 128, 617b cites "Cadwgan Ddu ap Cadwgan Goch" as the father of Einion
PF ii, 350 cites "Cadwgan Ddu ap Cadwgan Goch" as the father of Dafydd Goch,
while Pen. 287, 504 incorrectly makes Dafydd Goch the son of Iorwerth ap Cadwgan Ddu.
Pen. 129, 111 cites "Cadwgan Ddu ap Cadwgan Goch" as the father of Iorwerth
124. Madog ap Cadwgan Frych ap Cadwgan y Gwion, born c. 1285
His wife is unknown, but he had a
son:
160. Cynwrig ap Madog ap Cadwgan Frych
Pen. 128, 906a cites "Madog ap Cadwgan Frych" as the father of Cynwrig
125. Madog ap Ithel ap Jonas, born c. 1290
His wife is unknown, but he had a
son:
Maredudd ap Madog ap Ithel, born c. 1320 who had a daughter:
Susanna ferch Maredudd ap Madog, born c. 1350. She married Tudor (c. 1335) ap Hywel (c. 1305) ap Cynwrig Fychan (c.
1270) ap Cynwrig (c. 1240) ap Llywarch (c. 1205) ap Heilyn Gloff (c. 1175) ap Tyfid (c. 1145) ap Tangno (c. 1110) ap
Ystrwyth (c. 1080) ap Marchwystl (c. 1050) ap Marchweithian (c. 1020), Lord if Is Aled.
Dwnn ii, 228 cites "Susanna ferch Maredudd ap Madog ap Ithel ap Jonas" married
"Tudor ap Hywel ap Cynwrig Fychan ap Cynwrig ap Llywarch ap Heilyn ap Tyfid ap Tangno ap Ystrwyth ap Marchwystl ap Marchweithian"
126. Maredudd ap Madog ap Jonas, born c. 1290
His wife is unknown, but he had a
son:
161.
Einion ap Maredudd ap Madog
Pen. 128, 216a cites "Maredudd ap Madog ap Jonas" as the father of Einion
127. Llywarch ap Iorwerth ap Llewelyn, born c. 1280
His wife is unknown, but he had a
son:
162.
Cynwrig ap Llywarch ap Iorwerth
Pen. 136, 77 cites "Llywarch ap Iorwerth ap Llewelyn" as the father of Cynwrig
128. Madog Goch ap Owain Fychan ap Owain Wynn, born c. 1290
His wife is unknown, but he had a
son:
163.
Madog ap Madog Goch ap Owain Fychan
Dwnn ii, 300 cites "Madog Goch ap Owain Fychan ap Owain Wynn" as the father of
Madog
129. Dafydd ap Rhys Lloyd ap Owain Wynn, born c. 1295
His wife is unknown, but he had a
son:
Dafydd Wynn ap Dafydd ap Rhys Lloyd, born c. 1325. He married Myfanwy (c. 1345) ferch Dafydd Lloyd (c.) ap Dafydd (c.)
ap Einion (c.) ap Ednyfed (c. 1220) ap Sulien (c. 1190) ap Caradog (c. 1155) ap Collwyn (c. 1120) ap Y Llawer Craff (c. 1090)
ap Maredudd (c. 1055) ap Cynan (c. 1014) and had a daughter:
Angharad ferch Dafydd Wynn ap Dafydd, born c. 1360. She married Dafydd (c.1345) ap Owain (c. 1310) ap Rhys Goch (c. 1280)
ap Rhys (c. 1250), Lord of Marton in Chirbury, Salop.
Dwnn i, 291 cites "Dafydd Wynn ap Dafydd ap Rhys Lloyd" married "Myfanwy ferch
Dafydd ap Einion ap Ednyfed ap Sulien", while Pen. 131, 285 extends that as "Ednyfed ap Sulien ap Caradog ap Collwyn ap Llawr
Grach ap Maredudd ap Cynan". Either Myfanwy was a daughter of Dafydd Lloyd ap Dafydd ap Einion
ap Ednyfed or the marriage belongs to Dafydd the father of Dafydd Wynn.
Dwnn i, 291 also cites "Angharad ferch Dafydd Wynn ap Dafydd ap Rhys Lloyd" married
"Dafydd ap Owain ap Rhys Goch ap Rhys, Lord of Marton". We suspect the father of that Rhys was Cadwaladr ap Iorwerth
ap Rhys Gwnley ap Rhys Fychan ap Dafydd ap Gruffudd Chwith, and that Gruffudd Chwith was a younger son of Cadwgan ap Elystan
Glodrydd. Bartrum's charts suggest, but do not make, both those connections
130. Gronwy ap Cynwrig ap Iorwerth, born c. 1285
He married Angharad (c. 1300) ferch
Hywel (c. 1270) ap Dafydd (c. 1235) ap Gruffudd (c. 1205) ap Caradog (c. 1170) ap Thomas (c. 1135). We suggest this
Thomas was a son of Henry ap Cadwgan ap Bleddyn.
164. Gronwy Gethyn ap Gronwy ap Cynwrig
165. Madog ap Gronwy ap Cynwrig
Pen. 128, 147b, 272b & 590a cite "Angharad ferch Hywel ap Dafydd ap Gruffudd
ap Caradog" married "Gronwy ap Cynwrig ap Iorwerth". Dwnn ii, 69 extends her ancestry to "Gruffudd ap Caradog ap Thomas.
131. Hwfa ap Heilyn Fychan ap Heilyn, born c. 1280
His wife is unknown, but he had a
son:
166. Dafydd Ddu ap Hwfa ao Heilyn Fychan
Pen. 176, 334 & Pen. 139(1), 82 cite "Hwfa ap Heilyn Fychan ap Heilyn" as
the father of Dafydd Ddu

Cardiff 3.8, 157 cites "Iorwerth Fychan ap Iorwerth
ap Ithel" as the father of Maredudd
134. Ithel ap Ieuan ap Ithel, born c. 1280
His wife is unknown, but he had a
son:
169. Gwilym ap Ithel ap Ieuan
Pen. 134, 147 cites "Ithel ap Ieuan ap Ithel" as the
father of Gwilym
135. Dafydd Fychan ap Llewelyn y Stwg ap Ithel, born c. 1285
His wife is unknown, but he had a
son:

ap Ithel (Felyn)" as the father of Gronwy Goch
136. Ieuan ap Llewelyn y Stwg ap Ithel, born c. 1280
His wife is unknown, but he had a

father of Cynddelw
137. Cadwgan ap Gwilym ap Ithel, born c. 1290

Gwilym ap Ithel" as the father of Einion
138. Deio ap Iolyn ap Llewelyn, born c. 1295
His wife is unknown, but he had a
son:
173. Gruffudd ap Deio ap Iolyn
Pen. 287, 500 and Pen 139(1). 87 cite "Deio ap Iolyn
ap Llewelyn" as the father of Gruffudd
139. Einion ap Hywel ap Hwfa, born c. 1295
His wife is unknown, but he had a
son:
174. Madog ap Einion ap Hywel
Pen. 177, 45 cites "Einion ap Hywel ap Hwfa" as the
father of Madog, but omits 4 generations by skipping to Hwfa ap Ithel Felyn.
Pen. 134, 367 and Pen 128, 605a make the same omission, but append "Foel" to
the later Hywel.
The only construction which works chronologically is "Madog ap Einion ap Hywel
ap Hwfa ap Madog ap Einion ap Hywel Foel ap Hwfa ap Ithel Felyn"
140. Rhiwallon ap Meilyr ap Madog Goch, born c. 1300
His wife is unknown, but he had a
son:
175. Hywel Goch ap Rhiwallon ap Meilyr
Harl. 1977, 123v cites "Hywel Goch ap Rhiwallon ap
Meilyr" but skips 2 generations by making Meilyr the son of Tangwel. See notes at #83
141. Dafydd Welw ap Dafydd ap Madog Heddwch, born c. 1300
He married Mallt (c. 1315) ferch Dafydd
(c. 1280) ap Rhiryd (c. 1245) ap Trahaearn (c. 1215) ap Pasgen (c. 1180) ap Gwyn (c. 1150) ap Gruffudd (c. 1115) ap Beli (c.
1080) ap Selyf III (c. 1040) ap Brochwel III (c. 1005) ap Aeddan III (c. 975) ap Selyf II (c. 945) Ap Brochwel II (c.
910) ap Aeddan II (c. 880) ap Selyf I (c. 850) ap Brochwel I (c. 820) ap Aeddan I (c. 785) ap Cyngen (c. 750) ap
Brochwel (c. 715) ap Eliseg (c. 685) ap Gwylog (c. 655) descended from Cadell Ddyrnllwg. They had 2 sons:
176. Dafydd Lloyd ap Dafydd Welw ap Dafydd
177. Dafydd Fain ap Dafydd Welw ap Dafydd
Harl. 1973, 136 cites "Dafydd Wele ap Dafydd ap Madog
Heddwch" married "Mallt ferch Dafydd ap Rhiryd" while Pen. 127, 148 extends her ancestry as "Rhiryd ap Trahaearn ap Pasgen
ap Gwyn" and Pen. 131, 138 continues as "Pasgen ap Gwyn ap Gruffudd".
Harl. 1973, 136 cites Dafydd Wele and Mallt as the parents of Dafydd Fain
Dwnn i, 322 cites "Dafydd Wele ap Dafydd" as the father of Dafydd Lloyd
142. Llewelyn ap Ithel
ap Madog Heddwch, born c. 1295
His wife is unknown, but he had a
son:
Gruffudd ap Llewelyn ap Ithel, born c. 1330. He had a son
John ap Gruffudd ap Llewelyn, born c. 1360. His son
Ieuan ap John ap Gruffudd was born c. 1390
Pen. 287, 509 cites "Ieuan ap John ap Gruffudd ap
Llewelyn ap Ithel ap Madog Heddwch ap Meilyr"
143. Einion ap Madog ap Pyll, born c. 1300
His wife is unknown, but he had a
son:
178. Maredudd ap Einion ap Madog
Pen. 127, 129 cites "Einion ap Madog ap Pyll" as the father of Maredudd
144. Rhiryd Ddu ap Gwyn ap Hywel, born c. 1290
His wife is unknown, but he had 3
sons:
179. Dafydd ap Rhiryd Ddu ap Gwyn
180. Madog ap Rhiryd Ddu ap Gwyn
Llewelyn ap Rhiryd Ddu ap Gwyn, born c. 1325, had a daughter:
Alison ferch Llewelyn ap Rhiryd Ddu, born c. 1360. She married Belyn (c. 1350) ap Madog (c. 1320) ap Llewelyn Foel (c.
1290) ap Llewelyn (c. 1260) ap Madog (c. 1230) ap Llewelyn (c. 1195) ap Ithel (c. 1165) ap Heilyn (c. 1135) ap Eunydd (c.
1105) ap Heilyn (c. 1075) ap Eunydd (c. 1045) of Dyffryn Clwyd
Pen. 176, 93 and Pen 287, 510 cite "Rhiryd Ddu ap
Gwyn ap Hywel" as the father of Dafydd
Pen. 176, 84 cites "Rhiryd Ddu ap Gwyn ap Hywel" as the father of Madog
Harl. 1969, 447/448 cites "Alison ferch Llewelyn ap Rhiryd ap Gwyn" married "Belyn
ap Madog ap Llelo"; Harl. 1972, 78 says Llelo is aka Llewelyn Foel and cites "Llewelyn Foel ap Llewelyn ap Madog ap Llewelyn
ap Ithel ap Heilyn ap Eunydd". Chronologically, this is Heilyn ap Eunydd ap Heilyn ap Eunydd ap Morien of Dyffryn Clwyd
145. Meilyr ap Gwgan ap Trahaearn, born c. 1280
His wife is unknown, but he had a
son:
181.
Maredudd ap Meilyr ap Gwgan
Harl. 1973, 26 cites "Meilyr ap Gwgan ap Trahaearn" as the father of Maredudd
146. Iorwerth ap Trahaearn Goch ap Iorwerth Fychan, born c. 1290
He married Elen (c. 1300) ferch Madog
Fychan (c. 1270) ap Madog (c. 1240) ap Eginyr (c. 1210) ap Einion (c. 1180) ap Madog (c. 1150) ap Gwylog (c. 1120) descended
from Idnerth Benfras. They had 5 sons:
182. Iorwerth Fychan ap Iorwerth ap Trahaearn Goch
183. Ieuan ap Iorwerth ap Trahaearn Goch
184. Jonas ap Iorwerth ap Trahaearn Goch
185. Trahaearn ap Iorwerth ap Trahaearn Goch
Hywel ap Iorwerth ap Trahaearn Goch, born c. 1320, had a daughter:
Efa ferch Hywel ap Iorwerth, born c. 1350. She married first, Maredudd (c. 1335) ap Madog (c. 1300) ap Ieuan (c. 1265)
ap Iorwerth Fychan (c. 1230). See #189 below. She married secondly, Llewelyn (c. 1335) ap Maredudd (c. 1305) ap
Madog (c. 1275) ap Iorwerth (c. 1245) ap Maredudd (c. 1210) ap Madog Danwr (c. 1175) descended from Tudor Trevor.
Hist. Langurig, pp 370 says "Iorwerth ap Trahaearn of Garthmyl" married "Elen
ferch Madog Fychan". Our extension of Madog Fychan back to Idnerth Benfras is based on our construction of that family,
whose cited pedigrees are all flawed.
Dwnn i, 308 cites "Iorwerth Fychan ap Iorwerth ap Trahaearn" and assigns that
Iorwerth Fychan a wife born c. 1335; this cannot be the Iorwerth Fychan ap Iorwerth ap Trahaearn from #88 above, so we believe
this was Trahaearn Goch's family.
Harl. 1973, 26 cites "Iorwerth Fychan ap Iorwerth ap Trahaearn" as the father
of Ieuan, assigning Ieuan a wife born c. 1365. Accordingly, we believe this was Trahaearn Goch's family, not the earlier
Trahaearn of Garthmyl.
PF ii, 347 cites "Iorwerth Fychan ap Iorwerth ap Trahaearn" as the father of
Jonas. For the reasons stated immediately above, we think this was Trahaearn Goch
See comments at #185 for Trahaearn ap Iorwerth ap Trahaearn Goch
PF v, 120/121 says "Efa ferch Hywel ap Iorwerth ap Trahaearn" married "Maredudd
ap Madog ap Ieuan ap Iorwerth Fychan ap (Iorwerth) Y Gwion ap Trahaearn, while Dwnn i, 311 makes her the mother of "Ieuan
ap Maredudd ap Madog". The last source errs in its ancestry of Maredudd ap Madog, perhaps due to confusion with her
second husband.
PF ii, 202 says "Efa ferch Hywel ap Iorwerth ap Trahaearn" married "Llewelyn
ap Iorwerth ap Maredudd ap Madog Danwr, a construction with 2 missing generations. Pen. 128, 721b calls her second husband
"Llewelyn ap Maredudd ap Madog Danwr", a construction with 3 missing generations. Dwnn i, 311 cites a "Maredudd ap Madog
ap Iorwerth ap Maredudd ap Madog Danwr" and we believe he was the father of Efa's husband, Llewelyn. The Pen. 128 citation
equates the Madog who was the grandfather of Llewelyn with Madog Danwr of 100 years earlier.
We believe Efa was "ferch Hywel ap Iorwerth ap Trahaearn Goch" and was born c.
1350 because her son, Ieuan, married a lady born c. 1375.
147. Madog Lloyd ap Trahaearn Goch ap Iorwerth Fychan, born c. 1295
He resided at Garth Acres and married
Annes (c. 1310) ap Llewelyn (c. 1280) ap Einion (c. 1250) ap Celynin (c. 1220) ap Rhiryd (c. 1190) ap Cynddelw (c. 1155) ap
Iotrwerth (c. 1125) ap Gwrgeneu (c. 1095) ap Uchdryd (c. 1060) ap Aleth (c. 1025) ap Iorwerth (c. 995) ap Uchdryd (c. 965)
ap Aleth (c. 930) ap Alser (c. 895) ap Tudwal Gloff (c. 865) ap Rhodri Mawr (c. 820). They had a son:
186. Ieuan ap Madog Lloyd ap Trahaearn Goch
Dwnn i, 308 cites a Madog Lloyd of Garth Acres as father of Ieuan and as a descendant
of Llewelyn Aurdorchog. We believe this was a manor on the original lands of Garthmyl; his birthdate suggests he
was in the 4th generation after Trahaearn ap Iorwerth of c. 1170 and Lewys Dwnn, assuming that was his father, did not bother
to recite his ancestry. We think he was a son of Trahaearn Goch ap Iorwerth Fychan. This sources also names his
wife as "Annes ferch Llewelyn ap Einion ap Celynin"
Pen. 127, 9; Pen. 176, 129; Pen. 135, 391 give the ancestry of Annes as "Llewelyn
ap Einion ap Celynin ap Rhiryd ap Cynddelw ap Iorwerth ap Gwrgeneu ap Uchdryd ap Aleth". Extending this ancestry back
to Tudwal Gloff is merely our own construction based on our work on that family.
148. Ieuan Dwy ap Ieuan Goch ap Iorwerth Fychan, born c. 1290
His wife is unknown, but he had a
son:
187. Ieuan Fychan ap Ieuan Dwy ap Ieuan Goch
Dwnn i, 21 cites "Ieuan Dwy ap Ieuan Goch" as the father of Ieuan Fychan
149. Dafydd ap Rhys ap Iorwerth Fychan, born c. 1295
He lived at Betws in Ceri and married
Jane (c. 1310), daughter of Sir John of Walcot in Salop (c. 1285). They moved to Walcot after the death of Jane's father
and had a son:
188.
Evan Walcot ap Dafydd ap Rhys
Dwnn i, 111; Visitation of Shropshire, 476 cite "Dafydd ap Rhys as Iorwerth"
married "Jane, daughter of Sir John of Walcot". The timeline suggests the father of Dafydd and his brother, Llewelyn,
was actually Iorwerth Fychan. Both sources say Dafydd ap Rhys was the father of Evan de Walcot.
150. Llewelyn ap Rhys ap Iorwerth Fychan, born c. 1300
His wife is unknown, but he had a
son:
Ieuan ap Llewelyn ap Rhys, born c. 1330. His daughter:
Ales ferch Ieuan ap Llewelyn, born c. 1370, married Ieuan (c. 1360) ap Maredudd (c. 1325) ap Gruffudd Fychan (c. 1295) ap
Gruffudd Foel (c. 1265) ap Gruffudd (c. 1235) ap Llewelyn (c. 1205) ap Maredudd Bengoch (c. 1170) ap Llewelyn Fraisg (c. 1140)
ap Hywel (c. 1110) ap Seisyll (c. 1080) ap Llewelyn (c. 1050) ap Cadwgan (c. 1020) ap Elystan Glordydd (c. 985) Prince of
Fferlys.
Harl. 1972, 122 cites "Alis ferch Ieuan ap Llewelyn ap Rhys ap Iorwerth" married
"Ieuan ap Maredudd ap Gruffudd Fychan ap Gruffudd Foel ap Gruffudd ap Llewelyn ap Maredudd ap Llewelyn Goch ap Llewelyn Fraisg".
Our work on that family suggests Llewelyn Goch and Llewelyn Fraisg were brothers who both had sons named Maredudd, one nicknamed
'Bengoch' and the other 'Hen'. Pen. 127, 103 cites "Llewelyn ap Hywel ap Seisyllt ap Llewelyn", while JC Ms 20, 32 cites
"Seisyllt ap Llewelyn ap Cadwgan ap Elystan".
151. Madog ap Ieuan Fychan ap Iorwerth Fychan, born c. 1300
He married Elen ferch Adda, whose
ancestry is unknown. They had a son:
189.
Maredudd ap Madog ap Ieuan
Harl. 1973, 119 cites "Madog ap Ieuan ap Iorwerth" as the father of Maredudd.
Refer to the entries for his father and grandfather for our reasons to append "Fychan" to their names.
152. Einion ap Llywarch ap Llewelyn, born c. 1290
His wife is unknown, but he had 3
sons:
190.
Gronwy Sais ap Einion ap Llywarch
191.
Llewelyn Sais ap Einion ap Llywarch
Gwyn Hagr ap Einion ap Llywarch, born c. 1325. He married a daughter (c. 1335) ferch Gronwy Lloyd (c. 1300) ap
Iorwerth y Penwyn (c. 1270) ap Cynwrig (c. 1240) ap Iorwerth (c. 1205) ap Tegwared (c. 1170) ap Iddon (c. 1135) ap Iorwerth
(c. 1100) ap Iddon (c. 1070) ap Ithel (c. 1035) ap Edred (c. 1005) descended from Marchudd ap Cynan.
Pen. 129, 111; Pen. 176, 123 & 221 cite "Einion
ap Llywarch ap Llewelyn" as the father of Gronwy Sais
Pen. 135, 265 cites Gwyn Hagr as a son of "Einion ap Llewelyn". Pen. 131,
24 cites a "Gwyn ap Einion" without naming Einion's father, and says he married "a daughter of Gronwy Lloyd ap y Penwyn".
Pen. 127, 59 continues "Y Penwyn ap Cynwrig ap Iorwerth ap Tegwared ap Iddon" The timeline of that family dates the
lady c. 1335, so Gwyn Hagr must be a grandson of Llewelyn ap Ithel Dalfrith, i.e. "ap Einion ap Llywarch ap Llewelyn".
Later pedigrees confuse two lines descended from Llewelyn ap Ithel Dalfrith because there was both a "Gronwy Sais ap Einion
ap Llewelyn" and a Gronwy Sais ap Einion ap Llywarch ap Llewelyn".
The sources for Llewelyn Sais ap Einion will be discussed in #191 below
153. Gronwy Sais ap Einion ap Llewelyn, born c. 1295
His wife is unknown, but he had a
son:
192. Deicws ap Gronwy
Sais ap Einion
Pen. 129, 111; Pen. 127, 133; Pen 128, 156a &
612a: cite "Gronwy Sais ap Einion ap Llewelyn"
Harl. 1969, 214 cites "Deicws ap Gronwy Sais ap Einion"
154. Dafydd ap Iorwerth ap Gruffudd, born c. 1305
His wife is unknown, but he had
a son:
193. Ieuan
ap Dafydd ap Iorwerth
Pen. 287, 423 cites "Ieuan ap Dafydd ap Iorwerth"
in the chain of holders of the manor at Garthmyl
155. Rhys ap Philip ap Ithel, born c. 1290
His wife is unknown, but he had 2
sons:
194.
Gronwy Ddu ap Rhys ap Philip
195.
Tudor ap Rhys ap Philip
Pen. 177, 45 cites "Rhys ap Philip ap Ithel" as the father of Gronwy Ddu
Pen. 287, 507 cites "Rhys ap Philip" as the father of Tudor
GENERATION 15:
156. Madog ap Cadwgan Ddu ap Cadwgan Goch, born c. 1310
He married Marged (c. 1320) ferch
Iorwerth (c. 1285) ap Dafydd Hen (c. 1250) ap Gronwy (c. 1215) ap Iorwerth (c. 1185) ap Hywel (c. 1155) ap Moreiddig (c. 1125)
ap Sandde Hardd or Mortyn (c. 1095). They had a son:
196. Ieuan ap Madog ap
Cadwgan Ddu
Pen. 128, 148 cites "Madog ap Cadwgan Ddu ap Cadwgan
Goch" married "Marged ferch Iorwerth ap Dafydd" while Pen. 129, 55 extends her ancestry to "Iorwerth ap Dafydd ap Grronwy
ap Iorwerth ap Hywel ap Moreiddig ap Sandde Hardd". The first citation makes Ieuan their son.
157. Einion ap Cadwgan Ddu ap Cadwgan Goch, born c. 1310.
His wife is unknown, but he had a
son:
197. Einion Fychan ap
Einion ap Cadwgan Ddu
Pen. 128, 617b cites "Einion ap Cadwgan Ddu" as the father of Einion Fychan
158. Dafydd Goch ap Cadwgan Ddu ap Cadwgan Goch, born c. 1315
His wife is unknown, but he had a
son:
198. Dafydd ap Dafydd
Goch ap Cadwgan Ddu
Pen. 287, 504 cites "Dafydd Goch ap Iorwerth ap Cadwgan Ddu" as the father of
Dafydd, but that construction is a generation too long. We think Dafydd Goch was a brother of Iorwerth ap Cadwgan Ddu,
as given in PF ii, 350
159. Iorwerth ap Cadwgan Ddu ap Cadwgan Goch, born c. 1315
His wife is unknown, but he had a
son:
199. Cadwgan Decca
ap Cadwgan Ddu ap Cadwgan Goch
Pen. 128, 612a cites "Iorwerth ap Cadwgan Ddu" as the father of Cadwgan Decca.
Pen. 129, 111 and Pen 127, 132 cite the same, but omit the nickname "Decca"
160. Cynwrig ap Madog ap Cadwgan Frych, born c. 1315
His wife is unknown, but he had a
son:
200. Hywel ap Cynwrig

His wife is unknown, but he had a
son:
201. Dafydd

162. Cynwrig ap Llywarch ap Iorwerth, born c. 1310
His wife is unknown, but he had a
son:
202. Iolyn ap Cynwrig
ap Llywarch
Pen. 136, 77 cites "Cynwrig ap Llywarch ap Iorwerth" as the father of Iolyn
163. Madog ap Madog Goch ap Owain Fychan, born c. 1325
His wife is unknown, but he had a
son:
203. Bleddyn ap Madog
ap Madog Goch
Dwnn ii, 300 cites "Madog ap Madog Goch ap Owain Fychan" as the father of Bleddyn.
It dates Madog as "amser (in the time of) Edward I" but we believe it was his father who was born during the reign of
Edward I; Madog ap Madog Goch appears to have been born "amser Edward II"
164. Gronwy Gethyn ap Gronwy ap Cynwrig, born c. 1320
His wife is unknown, but he had 2
sons and a daughter:
204. Gronwy Ddu ap Gronwy
Gethyn ap Gronwy
Iolyn ap Gronwy Gethyn ap Gronwy, born c. 1355. His wife is unknown, but he had a daughter:
Cathryn ferch Iolyn ap Gronwy Gethyn, born c. 1390. She married Rhys (c. 1380) ap Ithel (c. 1345) ap Gruffudd (c. 1315) ap
Ithel Goch (c. 1280) ap Cynwrig (c. 1245) ap Iorwerth (c. 1215) ap Cynwrig Ddewis Herod (c. 1185) ap Cowryd Perfarch(c.
1150) ap Iarddur (c. 1115) ap Llewelyn Meudwy (c. 1085) ap Hedd (c.1050). The latter was a founder of one
of the 15 Noble Tribes of North Wales.
Annesta
ferch Gronwy Gethyn ap Gronwy, born c. 1350, married Ieuaf (c. 1340) ap Hwfa (c. 1310) ap Madog yr Athro (c. 1280) ap Hwfa
(c. 1250) ap Iorwerth (c. 1220) ap Gruffudd (c. 1190) ap Iorwerth (c. 1160) ap Ieuaf (c. 1130) ap Ninniaw (c. 1095) ap Cynwrig
(c. 1065) ap Rhiwallon (c. 1030) ap Cynwrig (c. 995) ap Rhiwallon (c. 965) ap Dyngad (c. 930) ap Tudor Trevor (c. 900)
Pen. 132, 191 cites "Gronwy Gethyn ap Gronwy ap Cynwrig"
as the father of Gronwy Ddu
Pen. 131, 53/54 cites "Cathryn ferch Iolyn ap Gronwy Gethyn and Gronwy"
married "Rhys ap Ithel ap Gruffudd ap Ithel Goch ap Cynwrig ap Iorwerth ap Cynwrig Ddewis Herod ap Cowryd ap Perfarch ap Iarddur
ap Llewelyn ap Meuter Fawr ap Hedd". This list contains 2 more generations than the timeline allows and our work suggests
Cowryd was nicknamed "Perfarch" and the "ap" following his name should be deleted; also we find that Llewelyn was nicknamed
"Meudwy" which was corrupted into "Meuter Fawr", and believe Llewelyn was a son of Hedd.
Pen. 128, 147b & 166a cite "Annes ferch Gronwy ap Cynwrig" but the timeline
requires that she be a daughter of Gronwy Gethyn ap Gronwy ap Cynwrig. The citations continue to say she married "Ieuan
ap Hwfa ap Madog yr Athro". Harl. 4181 calls him Ieuaf ap Hwfa ap Madog yr Athro, a construction we would accept since
the male name Ieuaf was favored by that family. Pen. 128, 137b continues "Madog yr Athro ap Hwfa ap Iorwerth ap Griffri
ap Ieuaf ap Ninniaw" but confuses him with another Madog yr Athro (born c. 1330) ap Hwfa ap Hywel ap Hwfa ap Iorwerth ap Gruffudd
ap Ieuaf ap Ninniaw. The Madog yr Athro of c. 1280 descended from a Gruffudd ap Iorwerth ap Ieuaf ap Ninniaw.
See #204 below for another lady misidentified as Annes ferch Gronwy ap Cynwrig.
165. Madog ap Gronwy ap Cynwrig, born c. 1315

ap Ithel ap Madog, born c. 1390
Pen. 177, 45 and Pen. 139(1), 82 cite "Ieuan ap Dai
ap Madog ap Einion ap Hywel ap Hwfa", but the latter adds "Foel" to Hywel and both mistake Hwfa for the earlier Hwfa ap Ithel
Felyn
Pen. 134, 367 cites "Deio ap Maredudd ap Madog ap Einion ap Hywel Foel at Hwfa",
incorrectly adding "Foel" to Hywel and mistaking Hwfa for Hwfa ap Ithel Felyn
Pen. 128, 605a; Pen. 177, 178/179; Pen. 178 (1), 5 cite "Dafydd ap Ithel ap Madog
ap Einion"
While there are no cited marriages to test the timeline in this branch of the
family up to 1390, Bartrum agrees with the dating we suggest and indicates that it conforms to the families after 1400 where
presumably he did find marriages to validate the timeline. We do not ourselves have any post-1400 sources for the family.
175. Hywel Goch ap Rhiwallon ap Meilyr, born c. 1330
His wife is unknown, but he had a
son:

512 continues "Ieuan Fain ap Dafydd Lloyd ap Dafydd Wele"
177. Dafydd Fain ap Dafydd Welw ap Dafydd, born c. 1330
He married Nest (c. 1345) ferch Madog
(c. 1315) ap Gruffudd (c. 1280) ap Einion (c. 1250) ap Ednyfed (c. 1220) ap Sulien (c. 1190) ap Caradog (c. 1155) ap Collwyn

had 3 sons:

Dwnn i, 308 cites "Iorwerth Fychan ap Iorwerth ap Trahaearn" married "Lleuci
ferch Cadwgan ap Philip Dorddu", while Pen 133, 209 extends her ancestry to "Cadwgan ap Philip Dorddu ap Hywel ap Madog ap
Hywel ap Gruffudd ap Gronwy" and Pen. 176, 127 continues as "Gruffudd ap Gronwy ap Gwrgeneu ap Hoedliw ap Cadwgan
ap Elystan". While Dwnn thought this Iorwerth Fychan ap Iorwerth ap Trahaearn was the same-named man of c. 1230, the
timeline shows his grandfather was actually Trahaearn Goch.
Dwnn i, 308 cites "Iorwerth Fychan ap Iorwerth ap Trahaearn (Goch)" as the father
of Madog y Twpa
PF ii, 347 (note 2) says "Iorwerth Fychan ap Iorwerth ap Trahaearn" was the father

184. Jonas ap Iorwerth ap Trahaearn Goch, born c. 1325
His wife is unknown, but he had a
son:
222.
Jonas Fychan ap Jonas ap Iorwerth
PF ii, 347 cites "Jonas ap Iorwerth ap Trahaearn" as father of Jonas Fychan.
185. Trahaearn ap Iorwerth ap Trahaearn Goch, born c. 1330
His wife is unknown, but he had 2
sons:

Harl. 1973, 28 cites Trahaearn ap Iorwerth as the father of Iorwerth
Harl. 1973, 21 cites Trahaearn ap Iorwerth as the father of Einion
The family timeline requires this to have been a Trahaearn ap Iorwerth born c.
1330, thus "ap Trahaearn Goch"
186. Ieuan ap Madog Lloyd ap Trahaearn Goch. born c. 1330
He married Sioned ferch Maredudd
ap Madog ap Iorwerth Goch, whose ancestry is unknown. They had 2 sons:

He married Anne (c. 1335) daughter
of John Mynde (c. 1300) ap Simon Mynde (c. 1270) ap William Mynde of Shropshire (c. 1240) They had a son:
228. Roger
Walcot of Walcot
Dwnn i, 111 and Vis of Shropshire, 476 cite "Evan
Walcot ap Dafydd ap Rhys" married Anne, daughter of John Mynde", while Vis of Shropshire, 370 extends her ancestry to "John
Mynde son of Simon Mynde. Simon occurs in the same generation as Agnes Mynde who, in Dwnn i, 323, is cited as marrying
William Mynde; we suggest Simon and Agnes were siblings.
Both original citations mentioned above make Roger Walcot a son of Evan and Anne
Mynde
189. Maredudd ap Madog ap Ieuan, born c. 1335
He married Efa (c. 1350) ferch Hywel
(c. 1320) ap Iorwerth (c. 1290) ap Trahaearn Goch (c. 1260). See #146 above. They had
a son:
229. Ieuan ap Maredudd
ap Madog
Harl. 1973, 119 cites "Maredudd ap Madog ap Ieuan"
married "Efa ferch Hywel ap Iorwerth ap Trahaearn" but only a granddaughter of Iorwerth ap Trahaearn Goch fits chronologically.
The same source cites their son, Ieuan.
190. Gronwy Sais ap Einion ap Llywarch, born c. 1320
His wife is unknown, but he had 4
sons and a daughter:
230. Owain ap Gronwy
Sais ap Einion
231. Gruffudd ap Gronwy
Sais ap Einion
232. Einion ap Gronwy
Sais ap Einion
Dafydd ap Gronwy Sais ap Einion, born c. 1355. He has a son:
Jenkin ap Dafydd ap Gronwy Sais, born c. 1390. His daughter:
Gwenllian ferch Jenkin ap Dafydd, born c. 1425, married Ithel (c. 1420) ap Ieuan (c. 1390) ap Tudor (c. 1360) ap Ieuan
(c. 1330) ap Tudor (c. 1300) ap Llewelyn (c. 1270) ap Philip (c. 1240) ap Rhiryd (c. 1210) ap Ieuan (c. 1180) ap Elidyr
of Garn (c. 1150) ap Yswatan Wyddel (c. 1120). We believe Yswatan is identical to Iorwerth ap Aldud ap Owain ap
Edwin of Tegeingl.
Cristyn ferch Gronwy Sais ap Einion, born c. 1350. She married Gruffudd (c. 1335) ap Ieuan (c. 1305) ap Dafydd
Ddu (c. 1270) ap Dafydd (c. 1240) ap Madog (c. 1210) ap Richard (c. 1175) ap Hywel (c. 1145) ap Llywarch (c. 1115) ap Rhiryd
(c. 1080) ap Owain (c. 1050) ap Edwin of Tegeingl (c. 1020)
Pen. 127, 111 cites "Gronwy Sais ap Einion ap Llywarch"
Pen. 134, 116 cites "Gwenllian ferch Jenkin ap Dafydd
ap Gronwy Sais ap Einion" married "Ithel ap Ieuan ap Tudor" while Pen. 176, 318 extends that to "Tudor ap Ieuan
ap Tudor" and Pen.134, 116 continues "Tudor ap Llewelyn ap Philip ap Rhiryd ap Ieuan ap Elidyr ap Garn ap Yswatan."
The family resided at Whitford Garn in Tegeingl and we think it should say "Elidyr of Garn".
See #192 below for a Deicws ap Gronwy Sais who is
often confused with this Dafydd ap Gronwy Sais.
191. Llewelyn Sais ap Einion ap Llywarch, born c. 1320
His wife is unknown, but he had 3
sons:
233. Madog Fychan ap Llewelyn
Sais ap Einion
234. Gwyn ap Llewelyn Sais ap
Einion
Einion ap Llewelyn Sais ap Einion, born c. 1355
Pen. 135, 346 cites Madog Fychan as a son of Llewelyn Sais, but carries the ancestry
no further.
B.M. Add. 15041, 322 cites "Llewelyn Sais ap Einion" as the father of Gwyn
Pen. 135, 345 cites "Llewelyn Sais ap Einion" as the father of Einion
192. Deicws ap Gronwy Sais ap Einion, born c. 1330
His wife is unknown, but he had a
son:
235. Jenkin ap Deicws
ap Gronwy Sais
Harl. 1969, 214 cites "Deicws ap Gronwy Sais ap Einion"
as the father of Jenkin
Bartrum has confused this Deicws with a Dafydd ap Gronwy Sais ap Einion, who
also named a son Jenkin, but the two men lived a whole generation apart. See #190 above
193. Ieuan ap Dafydd ap Iorwerth, born c. 1335
His wife is unknown, but he had
a son:
Ieuan Fwyndeg ap Ieuan ap Dafydd, born c. 1370. He had a single daughter:
Marged
ferch Ieuan Fwyndeg ap Ieuan, born c. 1400. She married John (c. 1390) ap Hywel (c. 1360) ap Gruffudd Lloyd (c. 1330)
ap Maredudd (c. 1295) ap Gruffudd Fychan (c. 1265) ap Gruffudd Ddu (c. 1235) ap Madog (c. 1205) ap Einion (c. 1170) ap Cynfelyn
(c. 1140) of Maesmawr. She carried the manor of Garthmyl to her husband and son and that family became known as Jones
of Garthmyl
Pen. 287, 423 cites "Marged ferch Ieuan Fwyndeg ap Ieuan ap Dafydd ap Iorwerth"
married John ap Hywel ap Gruffudd Lloyd ap Maredudd ap Gruffudd Fychan ap Gruffudd Ddu ap Madog ap Einion ap Cynfelyn"
Montgomeryshire Collections xxv, 297 cites the pedigree of the Jones Family,
whose ancestor John ap Hywel ap Gruffudd Lloyd married the heiress of Garthmyl. It calls her "Marged ferch Ieuan undeg,
from Llewelyn Aurdorchog"
194. Gronwy Ddu ap Rhys ap Philip, born c. 1320
His wife is unknown, but he had a
son:
236.
Ieuan ap Gronwy Ddu and Rhys
Pen. 177,45 cites "Gronwy Ddu ap Rhys ap Philip" as the farther of Ieuan
195. Tudor ap Rhys ap Philip, born c. 1325
His wife is unknown, but he had
a son:
237. Iolyn
ap Tudor ap Rhys
Pen. 139(1), 82 and 128 cite "Tudor ap Rhys" as the father of Iolyn, while Pen.
287, 507 cites him as "Tudor ap Rhys ap Philip"
GENERATION 16:
196. Ieuan ap Madog ap Cadwgan Ddu, born c. 1335
He married Angharad (c. 1340) ferch
Philip Kynaston (c. 1300) ap Gruffudd IV (c. 1265) ap Gruffudd III (c. 1230) ap Gruffudd Fychan (c. 1200) ap Sir Gruffudd
(c. 1165) ap Iorwerth Fychan (c. 1135) ap Iorwerth Goch (c. 1105) ap Maredudd (c. 1065) ap Bleddyn (c. 1025) ap Cynfyn.
They had a son and two daughters:
238. Madog ap Ieuan ap Madog
Angharad ferch Ieuan ap Madog, born c. 1360. She married first, Llewelyn Sais (c. 1345) ap Llewelyn (c. 1310) ap Madog
(c. 1280) ap Einion (c. 1250) ap Madog (c. 1220) ap Bleddyn (c. 1190) ap Cynwrig (c. 1160) ap Rhiwallon (c. 1130) ap Ednyfed
(c. 1100) ap Cynwrig (c. 1065) ap Rhiwallon (c. 1030) ap Cynwrig (c. 995) ap Rhiwallon (c. 965) ap Dyngad (c. 930) ap Tudor
Trevor (c. 900). She married secondly, Dafydd (Deio) (c. 1360) ap Madog Lloyd (c. 1330) ap Gruffudd (c. 1300) ap
Iorwerth Foel (c. 1265) ap Iorwerth Fychan (c. 1235) ap Owain (c. 1205) ap Bleddyn (c. 1175) ap Tudor (c. 1145) ap Rhys Sais
II (c. 1115) descended from Tudor Trevor.
Marged ferch Ieuan ap Madog, born c. 1365. She married Ieuan Bach (c. 1360) ap Ieuan (c. 1330) ap Einion Gethyn (c.
1300) ap Madog (c. 1265) ap Owain (c. 1235) ap Gruffudd (c. 1200) ap Cynwrig Fychan (c. 1165) ap Cynwrig Efell (c. 1135),
a base son of Madog ap Maredudd ap Bleddyn ap Cynfyn.
PF ii, 351/352 (citing the Cae Cyriog Ms) says "Ieuan ap Madog ap Cadwgan Ddu"
married "Angharad ap Philip Kynaston". Pen. 128, 148a cites the same marriage and calls her "Angharad ap Philip ap Gruffudd".
Pen. 131, 127 extends the Kynaston pedigree ap "Philip ap Gruffudd ap Gruffudd Fychan ap Gruffudd ap Iorwerth Goch ap Maredudd"
but that construction fails chronologically by two generations. We think Philip was the son of the 4th consecutive Gruffudd,
and that the earliest Gruffudd was the son of Iorwerth Fychan ap Iorwerth Goch (that Iorwerth Fychan cited in Pen, 131, 137
and Pen 129, 85)
Pen. 128, 162a cites "Ieuan ap Madog ap Cadwgan Ddu" as the father of Madog
Pen. 128, 154a cites "Angharad ferch Ieuan ap Madog" married "Llewelyn Sais ap
Llewelyn ap Madog ap Einion ap Madog ap Bleddyn ap Cynwrig ap Rhiwallon". The Bleddyn in that family is called "of Bersham"
so we would extend his pedigree to "Cynwrig ap Rhiwallon ap Ednyfed ap Cynwrig ap Rhiwallon" since this Ednyfed held Bersham.
The added generations are required for the chronology of this family.
Pen. 128, 147a/148a cites "Angharad ferch Ieuan ap Madog" married "Deio ap Madog
Lloyd ap Iorwerth Foel", while Pen. 127, 21 extends his ancestry as "Madog Lloyd ap Iorwerth Foel ap Iorwerth Fychan
ap Iorwerth Hen ap Owain ap Bleddyn ap Tudor ap Rhys Sais". Our work on the chronology of this family suggests
that Iorwerth Hen should be deleted from this list since he was probably the brother, not father of Iorwerth Fychan.
Both men married ladies born c. 1240
Pen. 128, 162a cites "Marged ferch Ieuan ap Madog" married "Ieuan Bach ap Ieuan
ap Einion Gethyn", while Pen. 128, 915 extends his ancestry as "Ieuan ap Einion Gethyn ap Madog ap Owain ap Gruffudd ap Cynwrig
Efell". Bartrum shows one generation missing from that construction; we believe Gruffudd was the son of Cynwrig Fychan
ap Cynwrig Efell. The wife usually cited for Cynwrig Efell was born c. 1160 and must have married a son of Cynwrig Efell,
probably one also named Cynwrig.
197. Einion Fychan ap Einion ap Cadwgan Ddu, born c. 1340
His wife is unknown, but he had a
son and a daughter:
239. Bleddyn ap Einion Fychan
ap Einion
Gwenllian ferch Einion Fychan ap Einion, born c. 1375. She married Dafydd (c. 1365) ap Madog Lloyd (c. 1330) a half-brother
of Dafydd ap Madog Lloyd who married Angharad ferch Ieuan ap Madog. (See #196 above)
Pen. 128, 617b cites "Einion Fychan ap Einion ap Cadwgan Ddu" as the father of
Bleddyn
Pen. 127, 194/195 cites "Gwenllian ferch Bleddyn ap Einion Fychan" married "Dafydd
ap Madog Lloyd ap Gruffudd ap Iorwerth Foel"; that Dafydd was born c. 1360 and his wife must have been a sister of Bleddyn,
not a daughter.
198. Dafydd ap Dafydd Goch ap Cadwgan Ddu, born c. 1345
His wife is unknown, but he had 2
sons:
240. Cadwgan ap Dafydd ap Dafydd
Goch
Iolyn Goch ap Dafydd ap Dafydd Goch, born c. 1380. His wife is unknown, burt he had a son:
Hywel ap Iolyn Goch ap Dafydd, born c. 1410
Carrdiff 3.8, 149 cites "Dafydd ap Dafydd Goch" as the father of Cadwgan, while
PF ii, 350 extends this to "Dafydd ap Dafydd Goch ap Cadwgan Ddu"
Pen. 287, 504 cites "Hywel ap Iolyn Goch ap Dafydd ap Dafydd Goch"
199. Cadwgan Decca ap Iorwerth ap Cadwgan Ddu, born c. 1345
He married a daughter (c. 1355) ferch
Iorwerth Fychan (c. 1320) ap Iorwerth (c. 1285) ap Dafydd Hen (c. 1250) ap Gronwy (c. 1215) ap Iorwerth (c. 1185) ap Hywel
(c. 1155) ap Moreiddig (c. 1125) ap Sandde Hardd (c. 1095) of Mortyn. They had 2 sons:
241. Gruffudd ap Cadwgan Decca
ap Iorwerth
242. Belyn ap Cadwgan Decca
ap Iorwerth
Pen. 129, 110/111 cites "Cadwgan Decca ap Iorwerth ap Cadwgan Ddu" married "a
daughter of Iorwerth Fychan ap Iorwerth ap Dafydd, while Pen 131, 125/126 extends her ancestry to "Iorwerth ap Dafydd ap Gronwy
ap Iorwerth" and Pen. 131, 131 extends that to "Gronwy ap Iorwerth ap Hywel ap Moreiddig ap Sandde Hardd"
Pen. 129, 111 cites "Cadwgan Decca ap Iorwerth" as the father of Gruffudd
Pen. 129, 88b cites "Cadwgan Decca ap Iorwerth" as the father of Belyn
200. Hywel ap Cynwrig ap Madog, born c. 1350
His wife is unknown, but he had a
son:
243. Ieuan ap Hywel ap Cynwrig
Pen. 128, 906a cites "Hywel ap Cynwrig ap Madog"
ap the father of Ieuan
201. Dafydd ap Einion ap Maredudd, born c. 1355.
His wife is unknown, but he had a
son:
Ieuan ap Dafydd ap Einion, born c. 1385. He had a son:
Gruffudd ap Ieuan ap Dafydd, born c. 1415
Pen. 128, 216a cites "Gruffudd ap Ieuan ap Dafydd ap Einion ap Maredudd"
202. Iolyn ap Cynwrig ap Llywarch, born c. 1340
His wife is unknown, but he had 2
sons:
244. Ieuan ap Iolyn ap Cynwrig
Dafydd ap Iolyn ap Cynwrig, born c. 1375. He married Angharad (c. 1385) ferch Gronwy ap Maredudd, whose ancestry is
unknown.
Dwnn ii, 278 cites "Iolyn ap Cynwrig ap Llywarch" as the father of Ieuan
Pen. 136, 77 cites "Dafydd ap Iolyn ap Cynwrig ap Llywarch" married "Angharad
ferch Gronwy ap Maredudd"
203. Bleddyn ap Madog ap Madog Goch, born c. 1355
His wife is unknown, but he had a
son:
245. Cynwrig ap Bleddyn ap Madog
Dwnn ii, 300 cites "Bleddyn ap Madog ap Madog Goch" as the father of Cynwrig
204. Gronwy Ddu ap Gronwy Gethyn ap Gronwy, born c. 1350
His wife is unknown, but he had 2
sons and 2 daughters:
246. Edward ap Gronwy Ddu ap
Gronwy Gethyn
Ednyfed ap Gronwy Ddu ap Gronwy Gethyn, born c. 1385
Mali ferch Gronwy Ddu ap Gronwy Gethyn, born c. 1380. She married Gruffudd (c. 1365) ap Ieuaf Goch (c. 1330) ap Llewelyn
(c. 1295) ap Ieuaf (c. 1265) ap Llewelyn (c. 1230) ap Ieuaf (c. 1195) ap Llewelyn (c. 1165) ap Cynwrig Efell (c. 1135), a
base son of Madog ap Maredudd ap Bleddyn ap Cynfyn.
Annes ferch Gronwy Ddu ap Gronwy Gethyn, born c. 1385. She married Gruffudd (c. 1370) ap Iorwerth (c. 1340) ap Hywel
(c. 1310) ap Iorwerth (c. 1275) ap Madog (c. 1245) ap Llewelyn (c. 1215) ap Madog Sutton (c. 1180) ap Elidyr (c. 1150) ap
Rhys Sais II (c. 1115) descended from Tudor Trevor.
Pen. 128, 681a cites "Gronwy Ddu ap Gronwy Gethin" as the father of Ednyfed
Pen. 134, 177 & 195 cites "Mali ferch Gronwy Gethyn ap Gronwy" married "Gruffudd
ap Ieuan Goch ap Llewelyn". He was born c. 1365 and had a second wife born c. 1375, so Mali cannot be a daughter of
Gronwy Gethyn and we make her a daughter of Gronwy Ddu ap Gronwy Gethyn. The ancestry of Gruffudd is continued by Pen.
138, 153 as "Ieuan Goch ap Llewelyn ap Ieuaf" and by Pen. 131 54 as "Llewelyn ap Ieuaf ap Llewelyn ap Cynwrig Efell".
That construction is 2 generations deficient since a repeating pair of Ieuaf ap Llewelyn is omitted.
Pen. 128, 166a cites "Annes ferch Gronwy ap Cynwrig" married "Gruffudd ap Iorwerth
ap Hywel ap Iorwerth ap Madog ap Llewelyn ap Madog Sutton ap Elidyr ap Rhys Sais". This Gruffudd was born c. 1370, so
Annes must be the daughter of Gronwy Ddu ap Gronwy Gethyn ap Gronwy ap Cynwrig. See #164 above for another Annes ferch
Gronwy who is misidentified in the source material.
205. Ieuaf ap Madog
ap Gronwy, born c. 1345
He married Mary, daughter of David
Holland whose ancestry is unknown. They had a son:
247. Iolyn ap Ieuaf
ap Madog
Pen. 131, 52; Pen. 129, 84; Pen. 127, 136 cite "Ieuaf
ap Madog ap Gronwy" as the father of Iolyn
PF v, 91 (citing BM Add 9864) says "Geoffrey ap Madog ap Gronwy" married "Mary,
d. of David Holland". This source alone calls Ieuaf "Geoffrey" and calls his son Iolyn "Oliver", probably the spelling
used by the non-Welsh family of Ieuaf's wife
206. Cynwrig ap Dafydd Ddu ap Hwfa, born c. 1345
His wife is unknown, but he had a
son:
Llewelyn
ap Cynwrig ap Dafydd Ddu, born c. 1375. He married Efa (c. 1385) ferch Gwrgeneu (c. 1355) ap Gruffudd (c. 1320).
See #207 below.
Pen. 176, 344 cites "Llewelyn ap Cynwrig ap Dafydd
Ddu ap Hwfa" married "Efa ferch Gwrgeneu ap Gruffudd Fychan ap Iolyn ap Ieuan". Pen. 287, 506 drops the "Fychan" from
Gruffudd ap Iolyn, a construction we prefer
207. Gwrgeneu ap Gruffudd ap Iolyn, born c. 1355
His wife is unknown, but he had 2
sons and a daughter:
248.
Llewelyn ap Gwrgeneu ap Gruffudd
Maredudd ap Gwrgeneu ap Gruffudd, born c. 1390
Efa ferch Gwrgeneu ap Gruffudd, born c. 1385. She married Llewelyn (c. 1375) ap Cynwrig (c. 1345) ap Dafydd Ddu (c.
1315). See #206 above
Pen. 176, 334 cites "Efa ferch Gwrgeneu ap Gruffudd
Fychan ap Iolyn" married "Llewelyn ap Cynwrig ap Dafydd Ddu. We follow Pen. 287, 506 which deletes "Fychan"
from Gruffudd ap Iolyn.
Pen. 287, 506 also cites "Gwrgeneu ap Gruffudd ap Iolyn" as the father of Llewelyn
Cardiff 3.8, 158 cites "Gwrgeneu ap Gruffudd Fychan ap Iolyn" as the father of
Maredudd. Again, we would delete "Fychan" from this Gruffudd
208. Ednyfed ap Maredudd ap Iorwerth Fychan, born c. 1345
His wife is unknown, but he had a
son:
249.
Dafydd ap Ednyfed ap Maredudd
Cardiff 3.8, 157 cites "Ednyfed ap Maredudd ap Iorwerth
Fychan" as the father of Dafydd
209. Gruffudd ap Gwilym ap Ithel, born c. 1345
He married a daughter (c. 1355) ferch
Ieuan (c. 1320) ap Dafydd (c. 1290) ap Gwrgeneu Fychan (c. 1260) ap Gwrgeneu (c. 1230) ap Iorwerth (c. 1195) ap Lleision
(c. 1165) ap Morgan (c. 1135) ap Caradog (c. 1105) ap Iestyn (c. 1075) ap Iestyn (c. 1040) ap Gwrgan
(c. 1010), king of Glamorgan. They had a son and a daughter:
250.
Rhys ap Gruffudd ap Gwilym
Gwenhwyfar ferch Gruffudd ap Gwilym, born c. 1395. She married Ednyfed (c. 1360) ap Gronwy (c. 1325) ap Adda (c. 1295)
ap Ithel (c. 1265) ap Iarddur (c. 1235) ap Adda (c. 1205) ap Ithel (c. 1175) ap Iarddur (c. 1145) ap Diwrig (c. 1115) ap Bledrus
(c. 1080) ap Merwydd Goch (c. 1040) ap Collwyn (c. 1010) ap Tangno.
Pen. 134, 147 cites "Gruffudd ap Gwilym ap Ithel"
married "a daughter of Ieuan ap Dafydd ap Gwrgeneu Fychan ap Gwrgeneu ap Iorwerth ap Lleison ap Morgan", while Pen. 176, 307
extends her ancestry to "Lleison ap Morgan ap Caradog". ABT 15 makes Morgan the son of Caradog ap Iestyn ap Gwrgan,
but Caradog clearly was born c. 1100/05 while Iestyn ap Gwrgan was born 2 generations earlier near 1040. The 1175 Brut
entry mentions this Morgan's mother as a sister of Lord Rhys, so Morgan was born no eaelier than 1135.
Our construction of the Glamorgan pedigrees requires both an Iestyn ap Gwrgan and an Iestyn ap Iestyn ap Gwrgan
to achieve a stable timeline for the family.
Pen. 134, 215 cites "Gruffudd ap Gwilym" as father of Rhys
Pen 134, 147 cites "Gwenhwyfar ferch Gruffudd ap Gwilym ap Ithel" married "Ednyfed
ap Gronwy ap Adda ap Ithel ap Iarddur ap Diwrig ap Bledrus ap Merwydd Goch". That construction is deficient by 3 generations,
and we suggest that between Gronwy ap Diwrig there were two consecutive strings of men called Adda ap Ithel ap Iarddur. HLG
9f extends his pedigree to "Iarddur ap Diwrig ap Bledrus ap Merwydd ap Collwyn ap Tangno"
210. Gronwy Fychan ap Gronwy Goch ap Dafydd Fychan, born c. 1345.
His wife is unknown, but he had a
son:
Dafydd ap Gronwy Fychan ap Gronwy Goch, born c. 1375. He had a daughter:
Erddylad ferch Dafydd ap Gronwy Fychan, born c. 1405. She married Ieuan (c. 1390) ap Tudor (c. 1360) ap Ieuan
(c. 1330) ap Tudor (c. 1300) ap Llewelyn (c. 1270) descended from Yswatan Wyddel. See #190 above for the
rest of his pedigree.
Pen. 134, 116 cites "Erddylad ferch Dafydd ap Gronwy
Fychan ap Gronwy Goch ap Dafydd Fychan" married "Ieuan ap Tudor ap Llewelyn ap Philip ap Rhiryd ap Ieuan". The citation omits
a second pair of "Ieuan ap Tudor" following those cited
211. Dafydd ap Cynddelw ap Ieuan, born 1345
His wife is unknown, but he had a
son:
251.
Gruffudd ap Dafydd ap Cynddelw
Dwnn ii, 302 cites "Dafydd ap Cynddelw ap Ieuan" as
the father of Gruffudd
212. Dafydd ap Einion ap Cadwgan, born c. 1355
His wife is unknown, but he had a
son:
252.
Ieuan ap Dafydd ap Einion
Harl. 2299 cites "Dafydd ap Einion ap Cadwgan" as
the father of Ieuan
Pen. 176, 48 cites "Dafydd ap Einion ap Cadwgan ap Gwilym ap Ithel ap Y Gwion
Gam"
213. Madog Heddwch ap Hywel Goch ap Rhiwallon, born c. 1360
He married a daughter (c. 1365) ferch
Maredudd (c. 1330) ap Dafydd Llwch (c. 1300) ap Llewelyn (c. 1265) ap Gruffudd Fychan (c. 1235) ap Gruffudd (c. 1200) ap Gwenwynwyn
(c. 1165) ap Owain Cyfeiliog (c. 1130) ap Gruffudd (c. 1095) ap Maredudd (c. 1065) ap Bleddyn (c. 1025) ap Cynfyn. They
had 2 sons:
253.
Maredudd ap Madog Heddwch ap Hywel Goch
254.
Einion ap Madog Heddwch ap Hywel Goch
Harl. 1982, 113v cites "Madog Heddwch ap Hywel Goch
ap Rhiwallon" married "a daughter of Maredudd ap Dafydd Llwch", while Pen. 175, 147 extends her ancestry to "Dafydd Llwch
ap Llewelyn ap Gruffudd Fychan ap Gruffudd ap Gwenwynwyn". ABT 8g extends that to "Gwenwynwyn ap Owain Cyfeiliog ap Gruffudd
ap Maredudd ap Bleddyn ap Cynfyn"
Harl. 1977, 123v and Harl. 1982, 113v cite "Madog Heddwch ap Hywel Goch ap Rhiwallon"
as the father of Maredudd
Pen. 135, 293 cites "Madog Heddwch" as the father of Einion, but carries his
ancestry back no further
214. Madog Lloyd ap Dafydd Fain ap Dafydd Wele, born c. 1365
He married Tanw (c. 1380) ferch Dai
(c. 1350) descended from Ednowain ap Bradwen. They had a son:
255.
Y Dai ap Madog Lloyd ap Dafydd Fain
Harl. 1973, 38 cites "Madog Lloyd ap Dafydd Fain ap
Dafydd Wele" married "Tanw ferch y Dai ap Ieuan ap Dafydd Goch", while Pen. 128,, 731b extends her ancestry as "Ieuan ap Dafydd
Goch ap Gruffudd ap Ednowain ap Bradwen". This construction is 2 generations deficient, but our work on the line is
not sufficient to suggest a solution
Dwnn i, 286 cites "Madog Lloyd ap Dafydd Fain" as the father of Dai
215. Ednyfed ap Maredudd ap Einion, born c. 1365
His wife is unknown, but he had a
son:

Pen. 127, 129 cites "Gwenhwyfar ferch Llewelyn ap Ednyfed ap Maredudd ap Einion"

ap Gwerystan was a brother of Cynfyn ap Gwerystan, the father of Bleddyn.
Pen. 287, 510 cites "Ieuan ap Dafydd ap Rhiryd Ddu" married "Gwladys ferch Cynwrig
Goch ap Bleddyn ap Dafydd".
Harl. 1969, 448 and B.M. Add 28033, 331 cite "Gruffudd ap Ieuan ap Dafydd"

219. Madog y Twpa ap Iorwerth Fychan ap Iorwerth, born c. 1355
He resided at Plas y Twpa in Betws,
Ceri; his wife is unknown but he had a son:
257. Ieuan ap Madog
y Twpa ap Iorwerth Fychan
Dwnn i, 308/309 cites "Madog y Twpa ap Iorwerth Fychan ap Iorwerth" as the
father of Ieuan. But it wrongly cites as his wife a lady who was the second wife of his son.
220. Llewelyn ap Iorwerth Fychan ap Iorwerth, born c. 1355
His wife is unknown, but he had a
son:
258. Huw ap Llewelyn ap Iorwerth

His wife is unknown, but he had a
son :
260. Gruffudd ap Jonas Fychan

223. Iorwerth ap Trahaearn ap Iorwerth, born c. 1360
His wife is unknown, but he had a
son:
261. Trahaearn ap Iorwerth ap
Trahaearn
Harl. 1973, 28 cites "Maredudd ap Trahaearn ap Iorwerth" and "Rhys Fychan ap
Trahaearn ap Iorwerth", both of whom were born c. 1425. Their father must have been born c. 1390, and we suggest he
was the son of this Iorwerth ap Trahaearn"
224. Einion ap Trahaearn ap Iorwerth, born c. 1365
His wife is unknown, but he had a
son:
262. Maredudd ap Einion ap Trahaearn
Harl. 1973, 21 cites "Hywel ap Maredudd ap Einion ap Trahaearn". He was born
c. 1430 and requires a father born c. 1400 and a grandfather born c. 1365.
225. Maredudd ap Ieuan ap Madog Lloyd, born c. 1360
His wife is unknown, but he had a
son and 3 daughters:

Sioned ferch Maredudd ap Ieuan, born c. 1395. She married Ieuan (c. 1385) ap Madog y Twpa (c. 1355). See #257
Dwnn i, 309 cites "Dafydd Goch ap Maredudd ap Ieuan, etc" intimating it was the
same Maredudd ap Ieuan mentioned elsewhere in this same pedigree, i.e. ap Madog.
Pen. 287, 414 cites "Arddun ferch Maredudd ap Ieuan" married "Maredudd ap John
Goch". Dwnn i, 308/309 cites this Arddun as the mother of Gwenllian who was the mother of Dafydd who was the father
of Cathryn; that Cathryn married Owain ap Hywel Goch, a son of Sioned the sister of Arddun.
Dwnn i, 308/309 cites "Sioned ferch Maredudd ap Ieuan ap Madog" married "Ieuan
ap Madog y Twpa" See #257 below
226. Ieuan ap Ieuan ap Madog Lloyd. born c. 1365.
He married Gwenllian (c. 1375) ferch

Cathryn ferch Ieuan ap Thomas, born c. 1490. She married Dafydd (c. 1480) ap Owain (c. 1450) ap Hywel Goch (c. 1420).
See #257
Dwnn i, 308/309 cites "Ieuan ap Ieuan ap Madog Lloyd" married "Gwenllian ferch
Gruffudd ap Madog Fychan", while Pen. 176, 216 continues "Madog Fychan ap Ieuan Foelfrych" The remainder of her pedigree
is our construction since the sources are hopelessly anachronistic.
Dwnn i, 308/309 cites "Gruffudd ap Ieuan ap Ieuan" married "Ales ferch Hywel
Goch ap Hywel Fychan", and further cites "Cathryn ferch Ieuan ap Thomas ap Gruffudd ap Ieuan ap Ieuan ap Madog Lloyd" married
"Dafydd ap Owain ap Hywel Goch"
227. Dafydd ap Ieuan Fychan ap Ieuan Dwy, born c. 1350
His wife is unknown, but he had a

He married Edith Downes, daughter
of Sir William Downes of Chester. They had a son:
265. Sir Philip Walcot, son
of Roger Walcot
Dwnn i, 111 and Vis. Shropshire, 476 cites "Roger Walcot son of Evan son of David"
married "Edith, dau of Sir William Downes" and says Sir Philip was their son.
East Cheshire Past & Present (by J P Earwaker), pp 321 cites the pedigree
of Sir Wiliam Downes as "son of William, son of William, son of Robert of Taxhall.
229. Ieuan ap Maredudd ap Madog, born c. 1365
He married Cathryn (c. 1375)
ferch Ieuan (c. 1340) ap Madog (c. 1310) ap Einion (c. 1280) ap Gruffudd Fychan (c. 1245) ap Gruffudd
(c. 1215) ap Rhys (c. 1185) ap Elidyr (c. 1150) ap Rhys Sais II (c. 1115) descended from Tudor Trevor. They had
a son:
266. Ieuan Bwl ap Ieuan
ap Maredudd
Harl. 1973, 229 cites "Ieuan ap Maredudd ap Madog" married "Cathryn ferch Ieuan
ap Madog ap Einion ap Gruffudd Fychan ap Gruffudd ap Rhys ap Elidyr". We think this Elidyr is the man of that name known
to be a son of Rhys Sais II.
230. Owain ap Gronwy Sais ap Einion, born c. 1350
His wife is unknown, but he had a
son:
267.
Madog ap Owain ap Gronwy Sais
Pen. 287, 835 cites "Owain ap Gronwy Sais ap Einion" as the father of Madog
231. Gruffudd ap Gronwy Sais ap Einion, born c. 1355.
His wife is unknown, but he had a
son:
268. Gwyn

232. Einion ap Gronwy Sais ap Einion, born c. 1355
His wife is unknown, but he had a
son:
Gruffudd ap Einion ap Gronwy Sais, born c. 1390. He had a daughter:
Gwenllian ferch Gruffudd ap Einion, born c. 1425. She married Gruffudd (c. 1420) ap Jenkin Goch (c. 1390) ap Cynwrig (c. 1360)
ap Madog (c. 1330) ap Gruffudd (c. 1300) ap Madog (c. 1270) ap Einion (c. 1240) ap Rhiryd (c. 1210) ap Iorwerth (c. 1180)
ap Madog (c. 1145) ap Iorwerth (c. 1110) ap Madog (c. 1080) ap "Ednowain Bendew II" (c. 1050).
Pen. 177, 150 cites "Gwenllian ferch Gruffudd ap Einion ap Gronwy Sais" married
"Gruffudd ap Jenkin Goch ap Cynwrig ap Madog ap Gruffudd" while Pen. 134, 138 extends his ancestry as "Madog ap Gruffudd ap
Madog ap Einion" and Pen. 127, 24 continues as "Madog ap Einion ap Rhiryd ap Iorwerth ap Madog". All sources omit the
second pair of "Iorwerth ap Madog" before continuing to Ednowain Bendew
233. Madog Fychan ap Llewelyn Sais ap Einion, born c. 1355
His wife is unknown, but he had a
son:
Gronwy Goch ap Madog Fychan ap Llewelyn Sais, born c. 1385. He had a daughter:
Gwenllian
ferch Gronwy Goch ap Madog Fychan, born c. 1420. She married Ithel (c. 1410) ap Dafydd (c. 1380) ap Ithel Foel (c. 1350)
ap Dafydd (c. 1320) ap Ithel Parson (c. 1290) ap Ithel Fychan (c. 1260) ap Ithel Gam (c. 1220) ap Ithel Lloyd (c. 1190) ap
Ithel Gam Hen (c. 1155) ap Maredudd (c. 1120) ap Uchdryd (c. 1085) ap Uchdryd (c. 1055) ap Edwin of Tegeingl (c. 1020).
Pen. 135, 346/347 cites "Gwenllian ferch Gronwy Goch
ap Madog Fychan ap Llewelyn Sais" married "Ithel ap Dafydd ap Ithel Foel ap Dafydd ap Ithel Person ap Ithel Fychan ap Ithel
Lloyd"; but Ithel Parson's father Ithel Fychan was actually the son of Ithel Gam ap Ithel Lloyd (a brother of a different
Ithel Fychan ap Ithel Lloyd), the only construction which follows a stable timeline. The abundance of men named Ithel
in this family caused many medieval genealogists to confuse one with another by disregarding chronology.
234. Gwyn ap Llewelyn Sais ap Einion, born c. 1350.
His wife is unknown, but he had a
son:
Hywel ap Gwyn ap Llewelyn Sais, born c. 1380. He had a son:
Gwyn ap Hywel ap Gwyn, born c. 1410. He married a daughter (c. 1415) ferch Sir Dafydd Chwitmor (c. 1380) ap Dafydd Chwitmor
(c. 1350) ap Dafydd (c. 1320) ap Ithel Fychan (c. 1285) ap Ithel Lloyd (c. 1250) Ithel Gam (c. 1220) ap Ithel Lloyd (c. 1190)
ap Ithel Gam Hen (c. 1155) ap Maredudd (c. 1120) ap Uchdryd (c. 1085) ap Uchdryd (c. 1055) ap Edwin of Tegeingl (c. 1020).
Pen. 135, 345 cites "Gwyn ap Hywel ap Gwyn ap Llewelyn Sais ap Einion" married
"a daughter of Dafydd Chwitmor ap Dafydd ap Ithel Fychan ap Ithel Lloyd ap Ithel Gam". With that construction, Bartrum's
chart shows a missing generation. 2 wives are cited for a Dafydd Chwitmor and our work suggests there was a Sir Dafydd
Chwitmor, son of Dafydd Chwitmor ap Dafydd. The Ithel Fychan ap Ithel Lloyd ap Ithel Gam in his ancestry was
a first-cousin of Ithel Person ap Ithel Fychan ap Ithel Gam cited in #233 above
235. Jenkin ap Deicws ap Gronwy Sais, born c. 1360
He married Mali Llwyd(c. 1375) ferch
Dafydd (c. 1345) ap Ithel (c. 1310) ap Llewelyn (c. 1280) ap Cynwrig Sais (c. 1250) ap Ithel Fychan (c. 1220) ap Ithel Lloyd
(c. 1190) ap Ithel Gam Hen (c. 1155) ap Maredudd (c. 1120) ap Uchdryd (c. 1085) ap Uchdryd (c. 1055) ap Edwin of Tegeingl
(c. 1020). They had a son:
Gronwy
ap Jenkin ap Deicws, born c. 1395
Pen. 134, 116 cites "Jenkin ap Deicws ap Gronwy Sais"
married "Mali Llwyd ferch Dafydd ap Ithel ap Llewelyn ap Cynwrig of Northop". We suspect this was the Cynwrig Sais of
Northop found in Pen. 131, 186 as "Cynwrig Sais ap Ithel Fychan ap Ithel Lloyd ap Ithel Gam Hen".
Harl. 1969, 214 cites "Jenkin ap Deicws ap Gronwy Sais ap Einion" as the father
of Gronwy.
236. Ieuan ap Gronwy Ddu ap Rhys, born c. 1355
He married Tangwystl (c. 1360) ferch
Cynwrig (c. 1320) ap Bleddyn (c. 1290) ap Ithel Anwyl (c. 1260) ap Bleddyn (c. 1225) ap Ithel Lloyd (c. 1190) ap
Ithel Gam Hen (c. 1155) ap Maredudd (c. 1120) descended from Edwin of Tegeingl. They had a son:
269.
Madog ap Ieuan ap Gronwy Ddu
Pen. 177, 45 cites "Ieuan ap Gronwy Ddu ap Rhys" married "Tangwystl ferch Cynwrig
ap Bleddyn" while Pen. 129, 112 extends her ancestry as "Cynwrig ap Bleddyn ap Ithel Anwyl ap Bleddyn ap Ithel Lloyd ap Ithel
Gam ap Maredudd"
Dwnn ii, 300 cites "Ieuan ap Gronwy Ddu" as the father of Madog
237. Iolyn ap Tudor ap Rhys, born c. 1360

son:

ap Robin (c. 1355) ap Rhys (c. 1320) ap Robert (c. 1290) ap Gruffudd (c. 1260) ap Hywel (c. 1225) ap Gruffudd (c. 1195) ap
Ednyfed Fychan (c. 1165).
Pen. 131, 67 cites "Maredudd ap Tudor ap Iolyn" married "Angharad ferch Rhys
ap Gruffudd Lloyd ap Robin ap Rhys ap Robert ap Gruffudd ap Hywel ap Gruffudd ap Ednyfed Fychan.
Pen. 139(1), 82 cites "Maredudd ap Tudor ap Iolyn ap Tudor ap Rhys"
GENERATION 17:
238. Madog ap Ieuan ap Madog, born c. 1370.
His wife is unknown, but he had a
son:
270.
Ieuan ap Madog ap Ieuan
Pen. 128, 157a cites "Madog ap Ieuan ap Madog" as the father of Ieuan
239. Bleddyn ap Einion Fychan ap Einion, born c. 1370
He married Angharad (c. 1375) ferch
Dafydd (c. 1345) ap Dafydd (c. 1310) ap Ieuan (c. 1280) ap Iorwerth (c. 1245) ap Dafydd (c. 1215) ap Iorwerth (c. 1185) ap
Hywel (c. 1155) ap Moreiddig (c. 1125) ap Sandde Hardd (c. 1095). They had 2 sons and a daughter:
271. Madog
ap Bleddyn ap Einion Fychan

Efa ferch Bleddyn ap Einion Fychan, born c. 1405. She married Llewelyn (c. 1395) ap Dafydd (c. 1365) ap Madog Fychan
(c. 1335) ap Madog Wyddel (c. 1305) ap Madog (c. 1270) ap Einion (c. 1240) ap Rhiryd (c. 1210) ap Iorwerth (c. 1180) ap Madog
(c. 1145) ap Iorwerth (c. 1110). See #234 above for the remainder of his pedigree.
Pen. 128, 589a cites "Bleddyn ap Einion Fychan ap Einion" married "Angharad ferch
Dafydd ap Dafydd ap Ieuan", while Pen. 128, 149a extends her ancestry to "Dafydd ap Dafydd ap Ieuan ap Iorwerth ap Dafydd".
It continues "Iorwerth ap Dafydd ap Gronwy ap Iorwerth" but her ancestor chronologically must have been "Iorwerth ap Dafydd
ap Iorwerth" (omittiing Gronwy). Both Dafydd ap Iorwerth and Gronwy ap Iorwerth were born c. 1215 and appear to be brothers.
Pen. 128, 589a also cites Bleddyn as the father of Madog and Gruffudd
Pen. 134, 257 cites "Efa ferch Bleddyn ap Einion Fychan" married "Llewelyn ap
Dafydd ap Madog Fychan ap Madog Wyddel ap Madog ap Einion", while Pen. 131, 138 extends his ancestry as "Madog ap Einion ap

Gruffudd ap Dafydd ap Cadwgan, born c. 1440. He had a son:
Ieuan ap Gruffudd ap Dafydd, born c. 1470
PF ii, 350 (probably citing Cardiff 3.8, 149) cites "Ieuan ap Gruffudd ap Dafydd
ap Cadwgan ap Dafydd ap Dafydd Goch ap Cadwgan Ddu"
241. Gruffudd ap Cadwgan Decca ap Iorwerth, born c. 1375
He married first, Mallt (c. 1385)
ferch Ithel (c. 1350) ap Cynwrig (c. 1320) ap Bleddyn (c. 1290) ap Ithel Anwyl (c. 1260) ap Bleddyn (c. 1225) ap Ithel Lloyd
(c. 1190) ap Ithel Gam Hen (c. 1155). See #233 above for the remainder of her pedigree. By this wife, he had a son and
a daughter:
273. Dafydd Lloyd
ap Gruffudd ap Cadwgan Decca
Mallt ferch Gruffudd ap Cadwgan Decca, born c. 1410. She married Gwyn (c. 1410) ap Madog (c. 1380) ap Dafydd Lloyd (c.
1345) ap Madog Goch (c. 1315) ap Heilyn Fychan (c. 1285) ap Heilyn (c. 1250) ap Ieuaf (c. 1215) ap Gruffudd (c. 1185) ap Llewelyn
(c. 1150) ap Owain (c. 1115) ap Aldud (c. 1085) ap Owain (c. 1050) ap Edwin of Tegeingl (c. 1020).
He married, secondly, Tangwystl (c. 1385)
ferch Ieuan (c. 1355) ap Llewelyn (c. 1320) ap Gruffudd Lloyd (c. 1290) ap Maredudd (c. 1255) ap Llewelyn (c. 1225) ap Ynyr
(c. 1190) descended from Sandde Hardd. They had a son and a daughter:
Gruffudd Goch ap
Gruffudd ap Cadwgan Decca, born c. 1410
Tangwystl ferch
Gruffudd ap Cadwgan Decca, born c. 1415. She married Ieuan ap Llewelyn ap Einion descended from Aleth of Dyfed.
Pen. 176, 60 cites "Gruffudd ap Cadwgan Decca" married "Mallt ferch Ithel ap
Cynwrig ap Bleddyn ap Ithel Anwyl", while Pen. 129, 112 extends her ancestry as "Bleddyn ap Ithel Anwyl ap Bleddyn ap Ithel
Lloyd ap Ithel Gam ap Maredudd ap Uchdryd".
Pen 176, 60 cites Gruffudd and Mallt as the parents of Dafydd
Lloyd
Pen. 135, 353 cites "Mallt ferch Gruffudd ap Cadwgan Decca" married "Gwyn ap
Madog ap Dafydd Lloyd ap Madog Goch ap Heilyn Fychan ap Heliyn ap Ieuaf ap Gruffudd ap Llewelyn ap Owain ap Aldud"
Pen. 129, 111 cites "Gruffudd ap Cadwgan Decca ap Iorwerth" married "Tangwystl
ferch Ieuan ap Llewelyn" while Pen. 131, 134 extends her ancestry to "Ieuan ap Llewelyn ap Gruffudd Lloyd ap Maredudd
ap Llewelyn ap Ynyr". Many sources identify Llewelyn ap Ynyr as "ap Hywel ap Moreiddig ap Sandde Hardd".
Pen. 129, 111 and 132 cite Gruffudd and Tagnwystl as the parents of Gruffudd
Goch
Pen. 128, 822b cites "Tangwystl ferch Gruffudd ap Cadwgan Decca" married "Ieuan
ap Llewelyn ap Einion". The pedigree of his family contains a 2 generation gap, but we suspect he was "Ieuan ap Llewelyn
ap Einion ap Celynin ap Einion ap Celynin ap Rhiryd ap Cynddelw ap Iorwerth ap Gwrgeneu ap Uchdryd ap Aleth"
242. Belyn ap
Cadwgan Decca ap Iorwerth, born c. 1380
He married Gwen (c. 1395) ferch Dafydd (c.
1365) ap Madog Fychan (c. 1335) ap Madog Wyddel (c. 1305). See #239 above for the remainder of her pedigree. They had
a son and a daughter:
274. Gruffudd ap
Belyn ap Cadwgan Decca
Gwerfyl ferch Belyn ap Cadwgan Decca, born c. 1415. She married Ieuan Wynn (c. 1405) ap Einion (c. 1375) ap Ieuan y
Athro (c. 1340) ap Gruffudd (c. 1395) ap Dafydd Dinllais (c. 1270) ap Dafydd (c. 1235) ap Madog (c. 1205) ap Richard (c. 1175)
ap Hywel (c. 1140) ap Llywarch (c. 1110) ap Rhiryd (c. 1080) ap Owain (c. 1050) ap Edwin of Tegeingl (c. 1020).
Dwnn ii, 321 cites "Heilyn ap Cadwgan Decca ap Iorwerth" married "Gwen ferch
Dafydd ap Madog Fychan" while Pen. 129, 88b says "Belyn ap Cadwgan Decca ap Iorwerth" married "Gwen ferch Dafydd ap Madog
Fychan ap Madog Wyddel". We think the spelling in Dwnn is corrupt, but it makes this couple the parents of Gruffudd.
PF iv, 181 (quoting Harl. 9865) cites "Gwerfyl ferch Belyn ap Cadwgan Decca ap
Iorwerth" married "Ieuan Wynn ap Einion ap Ieuan y Athro ap Gruffudd ap Dafydd Dinllais ap Dafydd ap Madog ap Rhiryd
ap Hywel ap Llywarch ap Rhiryd ap Owain ap Edwin". However, earlier sources (Pen. 127, 136 and Pen. 128, 252b) say the
father of the Madog in that list was Richard, not Rhiryd.
243. Ieuan ap Hywel ap Cynwrig, born c. 1380
His wife is unknown, but he had a

there is no evidence that Bleddyn ap Madog ap Rhiryd had a son named Cynwrig.

This would be Pasgen III born c. 1180 of the First Powys Dynasty. Alternatively, the name "Heilyn of Caereinion" may
be an error; Rhiryd ap Hywel ap Trahaearn ap Pasgen had a son named Einion, also born c. 1310, who had a son called Einws.

1175) ap Ieuaf (c. 1145) ap Gronwy (c. 1115) ap Ifor (c. 1085) ap Idnerth (c. 1050) ap Cadwgan (c. 1020) ap Elystan Glodrydd
(c. 990) of Fferlys.
Rhys Fychan ap Trahaearn ap Iorwerth, born c. 1425. He married Alison (c. 1440) ferch Maredudd (c. 1410) ap Ieuan (c.
1380). She was a sister of Nest in #256 above.
Harl. 1973, 28 cites "Maredudd ap Trahaearn ap Iorwerth" married "Myfanwy ferch
Ieuan Goch ap Madog" while Pen. 128, 124a extends her ancestry to "Ieuan Goch ap Madog ap Einion ap Hywel ap Tudor ap Einion
Fychan ap Einion" and Pen. 128, 723b continues that Einion to "ap Meurig ap Ieuaf ap Gronwy". Pen. 127, 102 continues
"Ieuaf ap Gronwy ap Ifor ap Idnerth ap Cadwgan ap Elystan".
Harl. 1973, 28 cites "Rhys Fychan ap Trahaearn ap Iorwerth" married "Alison ferch
Maredudd ap Ieuan" and Pen. 128, 712a extends her ancestry back to Meilyr Gryg as shown under #256 above
262. Maredudd ap Einion ap Trahaearn, born c. 1400
His wife is unknown, but he had 2
sons:
Hywel
ap Maredudd ap Einion, born c. 1430. He married Annes (c. 1440) ferch Maredudd (c. 1410) ap Ieuan (c. 1380). She
was a sister of Nest in #256 above.
Gruffudd
ap Maredudd ap Einion, born c. 1435. He married Sioned (c. 1445) ferch Maredudd (c. 1410) ap Ieuan (c. 1380).
She was a sister of Annes, next above.
Harl, 1973, 21 cites "Hywel ap Maredudd ap Einion ap Trahaearn" married "Annes
ferch Maredudd ap Ieuan"; her ancestry back to Meilyr Gryg is shown in #256 above
Harl 1973, 28 cites "Gruffudd ap Maredudd ap Trahaearn" married "Sioned
ferch Maredudd ap Ieuan". Since Sioned was a sister of Annes (who married the brother of Gruffudd), this citation should
read "Gruffudd ap Maredudd ap Einion ap Trahaearn". Another sister of Sioned and Annes was Alison who married Rhys Fychan
(#261 above), a second cousin of Hywel and Gruffudd.
263. Dafydd Goch ap Maredudd ap Ieuan, born c. 1390
His wife is unknown, but he had a
daughter:
Efa ferch Dafydd Goch ap Maredudd, born c. 1420. She married John (c. 1405) ap Dafydd (c. 1375) ap Tudor Fychan (c.
1345) ap Ednyfed Goch (c. 1315) ap Gruffudd (c. 1285) ap Einion (c. 1250) ap Llewelyn (c. 1220) ap Meilyr Gryg II (c. 1190)
Dwnn i, 308/309 cites "Efa ferch Dafydd Goch ap Maredudd ap Ieuan" married John
ap Dafydd ap Tudor Fychan" while Dwnn i, 236 extends his ancestry to "Dafydd ap Tudor Fychan ap Ednyfed Goch ap Gruffudd".
Harl 1973, 48 continues "Gruffudd ap Einion ap Llewelyn ap Meilyr Gryg" although Bartrum's chart "Ednyfed Goch" fails to connect
him to anyone.
264. Deicws Lloyd ap Dafydd ap Ieuan Fychan, born c. 1380.
He married Gwerfyl (c. 1390) ferch
Dafydd (c. 1360) ap Llewelyn Fychan (c. 1325) ap Llewelyn (c. 1295) ap Adda (c. 1265) ap Gruffudd (c. 1230) ap Gronwy (c.
1195) ap Gwyn (c. 1165) ap Ieuan (c. 1130) ap Cadfan (c. 1100) ap Cadfael (c. 1070) ap Mathew Hen (c. 1040) ap Brochwel
III (c. 1005) ap Aeddan III (c. 975) ap Selyf II (c. 945). See #141 above for the rest of her pedigree. They
had a daughter:
Angharad ferch Deicws Lloyd ap Dafydd, born c. 1410. She married David Dwnn (c. 1395) ap Maredudd (c. 1365) ap Henry
Dwnn (c. 1330) ap Gruffudd Gethyn (c. 1300) ap Cadwgan (c. 1270) ap Gruffudd (c. 1240) ap Cadwgan Fawr (c. 1210) ap Cadwgan
(c. 1180) ap Gruffudd Fychan (c. 1150) ap Gruffudd (c. 1120) ap Llewelyn (c. 1090) ap Gwrgan (c. 1060). This was a family
of Cydweli whose early ancestry is usually traced to a Pliws Hen, king of Dyfed in the early 8th century.
Dwnn i, 21 cites "Deicws Lloyd ap Dafydd ap Ieuan Fychan" married "Gwerfyl ap
Dafydd ap Llewelyn" but Pen. 128, 736a calls him "Dafydd ap Llewelyn Fychan ap Llewelyn ap Adda ap Gruffudd ap Gronwy" and
Dwnn i, 302/303 extends that to "Gruffudd ap Gronwy ap ap Gwyn ap Cuan ap Cadfan ap Cadfael ap Maredudd Hen".
Some citations call the latter Bod Hen (Bod was a nickname for Matthew) and try
to attach him to Brochwel Ysgithrog, but his father, Brochwel, would be born c. 1005
Dwnn i, 21 also cites "Angharad ferch Deicws Lloyd ap Dafydd ap Ieuan Fychan"
married "Dafydd Dwnn ap Maredudd ap Henry Dwnn ap Gruffudd Gethyn ap Cadwgan ap Gruffudd ap Cadwgan Fawr ap Cadwgan ap Gruffudd
Fychan ap Gruffudd ap Llewelyn ap Gwrgan".
265. Sir Philip Walcot, son of Roger Walcot, born c. 1390.
He married Julia (c. 1400), daughter
of John Harley (c. 1365) son of Robert Harley (c. 1335) son of Richard Harley (c. 1300) son of Robert Harley (c. 1270) of
Brampton Bryan, Herefordshire. They had a son:
John Walcot, born c. 1425. He married Ales (c. 1440), a base daughter of Dafydd Lloyd (c. 1415) ap Sir Gruffudd
Fychan (c. 1385). Sir Gruffudd was the representative of the senior line descended from the First Powys Dynasty, and
was slain in 1447. John and Ales had a son:
Roger Walcot, born c. 1455. He married Marged (c. 1465) ap Dafydd Lloyd, the bard of Mathafern (c. 1430). The
latter entertained Henry Tudor as he traveled to Bosworth Field in 1485, and wrote a poem predicting his victory over King
Richard III. Dafydd Lloyd descended from Einion ap Seisyllt of Mathafern.
We suspect Sir Philip
had another son, William born c. 1430, who was murdered in 1462 for adultry and whose base son, Thomas, resided with his mother
in Devonshire where the family name was spelled Wolcott. This might be the unproven line from which the American Wolcott
family descended.
Dwnn i, 111 and Vis. Shropshire, 476 cite "Sir Philip Walcot, son of Roger" married
"Julia, dau of John Herle". This was the Welsh spelling of "Harley"; his ancestry is cited in Vis. Shropshire, 304/305
The original two sources just mentioned also cite "John Walcot, son of Sir Philip
Walcot" married "Alice ferch Dafydd Lloyd ap Sir Gruffudd Fychan". Montgomeryshire Collections, viii, 399 gives his
pedigree as "ap Gruffudd ap Ieuan ap Madog ap Gwynwys ap Gruffudd ap Beli ap Selyf ap Brochwel ap Aeddan." Chronologically,
this must have been Brochwel IV ap Aeddan IV, "ap Selyf III ap Brochwel III"; that Selyf III was a brother of Matthew Hen
discussed in #264 above.
The same sources say John Walcot ap Sir Philip had a son named Roger. Dwnn
i, 111 says that Roger married "Marged ferch Dafydd Lloyd of Mathafern". Vis. Shropshire, 477 incorrectly assigns that
marriage to another Roger Walcot, the son of a different John Walcot, which fails chronologically.
Early members of the Wolcott family which came to America in 1630 bore the arms
of the Shropshire Walcot family. Attempts by the American Wolcott family to link to a John Walcot living in 1415 have
not resulted in a convincing pedigree. We suspect the link is through an illegitimate son of a William ap Sir Philip
Walcot whom we would identify with the William Walcot murdered in 1462, probably the same man called William Willascot in
Vis. Shropshire, 448 as the first husband of Elisabeth Stury.
266. Ieuan Bwl
ap Ieuan ap Maredudd, born c. 1395
He married Marged ferch Rhys
ap Maredudd ap Dafydd Chwith, whose ancestry is unknown. He had a son:
Philip ap Ieuan Bwl ap Ieuan, born c. 1425. He married Gwenhwyfar (c. 1435) ferch Dafydd Lloyd (c. 1400) ap Gruffudd
(c. 1370) ap Einion (c. 1335) ap Iorwerth (c. 1305) ap Maredudd (c. 1270) ap Madog (c. 1240) ap Maredudd (c. 1205) ap Madog
Danwr (c. 1175) descended from Tudor Trevor. They had a son:
Ieuan ap Philip ap Ieuan Bwl, born c. 1460. He married Angharad (c. 1470) ferch Morys (c. 1435) ap Dafydd (c. 1400)
ap Llewelyn (c. 1365) ap Rhys (c. 1330) ap Llewelyn (c. 1300) ap Gruffudd (c. 1265) ap Rhys (c. 1235) ap Iorwerth (c. 1200)
ap Hywel (c. 1170) ap Cadifor (c. 1135) ap Dyfnwal (c. 1100) descended from Tudwal Gloff ap Rhodri Mawr. Their
son:
Jenkin ap Ieuan ap Philip, born c. 1495, married Gwenhwyfar (c. 1510) ferch Mathew (c. 1480) ap Llewelyn (c. 1450) ap Ieuan
(c. 1420) ap Maredudd (c. 1390) ap Madog Goch (c. 1360) ap Madog Fychan (c. 1330) ap Madog (c. 1300) ap Ieuan (c. 1270) ap
Gruffudd Goch (c. 1240) ap Maredudd (c. 1205) ap Madog Danwr (c. 1175) descended from Tudor Trevor. Their son:
David Lloyd ap Jenkin, born c. 1525, was High Sheriff for Montgomeryshire in 1574. He married Lowry (c. 1540) ferch
Owain Gwyn (c. 1510) ap Llewelyn Lloyd (c. 1480) ap Ieuan (c. 1450) ap Rhys (c. 1420) ap Adda (c. 1390) ap Hywel (c. 1360)
ap Adda Ddu (c. 1330) descended from Einion ap Cynfelyn of Maesmawr.
Dwnn i, 311 and Harl. 1973, 119 cite "Ieuan Bwl ap Ieuan ap Maredudd ap Madog"
married Marged ferch Rhys ap Maredudd ap Dafydd Chwith".
Montgomeryshire Collections vii, 55 cites "Philip ap Ieuan Bwl ap Ieuan" married
"Gwenhwyfar ap Dafydd Lloyd ap Gruffudd ap Einion ap Iorwerth ap Maredudd ap Madog" whom it mistakes for Madog Danwr.
Our work finds this was "Maredudd ap Madog ap Maredudd ap Madog Danwr".
Dwnn i, 311 cites "Ieuan ap Philip ap Ieuan Bwl" married "Angharad ferch Morys
ap Dafydd ap Llewelyn ap Rhys", while Bodleian Add C 177, 26 extends that to "Llewelyn ap Rhys ap Llewelyn ap Gruffudd ap
Rhys". Pen. 128, 664b extends that as "Llewelyn ap Gruffudd ap Rhys ap Iorwerth" and Dwnn i, 26 completes it as "Rhys
ap Iorwerth ap Hywel ap Cadifor ap Dyfnwal". Several of the intervening sources became corrupt where we ceased to cite
them, linking this family to Collwyn ap Tangno or Einion ap Collwyn, all which fail chronologically.
Dwnn i, 311 cites "Jenkin ap Ieuan ap Philip" married "Gwenhwyfar ferch Mathew
ap Llewelyn ap Ieuan ap Maredudd" and PF ii, 272 extends that as "Mathew ap Llewelyn ap Ieuan ap Maredudd ap Madog Goch ap
Madog Fychan ap Madog ap Ieuan ap Maredudd ap Madog Danwr", a construction which is 1 generation short of satisfactory.
Pen. 138, 358 cites a "Ieuan ap Gruffudd Goch ap Maredudd ap Madog Danwr" and we would insert Gruffudd Goch into the pedigree
of Gwenhwyfar.
Dwnn i, 311 cites "Dafydd Lloyd ap Jenkin ap Ieuan" married "Lowry Gwyn ferch
Owain Gwyn ap Llewelyn" while Dwnn i, 310 extends that as "Owain Gwyn ap Llewelyn Lloyd ap Ieuan ap Rhys ap Adda ap Hywel
ap Adda Ddu"
267. Madog ap Owain ap Gronwy Sais, born c. 1380
His wife is unknown, but he had a
daughter:
Gwenllian ferch Madog ap Owain, born c. 1415. She married Madog (c. 1400) ap Bleddyn (c. 1370) ap Einion Fychan (c.
1340). See #271 below.
See #271 for sources citing the parents and spouse of Gwenllian
268. Gwyn ap Gruffudd ap Gronwy Sais, born c. 1385.
His wife is unknown, but he had 2
sons and 2 daughters:
Nicholas ap Gwyn ap Gruffudd, born c. 1415. He married Marged (c. 1425) ferch Ieuan (c. 1390) ap Rhys Gethyn (c. 1355)
ap Gruffudd Fychan (c. 1320) ap Gruffudd (c. 1290) ap Dafydd Goch (c. 1260) ap Dafydd (c. 1230) ap Gruffudd (c. 1200) ap Llewelyn
(c. 1170) ap Iorwerth (c. 1135) ap Nefydd Hardd (c. 1105)
Ieuan ap Gwyn ap Gruffudd, born c. 1420. He had a daughter:
Llueci ferch Ieuan ap Gwyn, born c. 1450. She married John (c. 1440) ap Gruffudd Lloyd (c. 1410) ap Dafydd (c. 1375).
See #249 above. Ieuan ap Gwyn ap Gruffudd also had a son, Rhys, and another unnamed daughter.
Cristyn ferch Gwyn ap Gruffudd, born c. 1415. She married Gronwy (c. 1400) ap Gwilym (c. 1360) ap Maredudd (c. 1325) ap
Gruffudd Lloyd (c. 1290) ap Maredudd (c. 1255) ap Llewelyn (c. 1225) ap Ynyr (c. 1190) ap Hywel (c. 1155) ap Moreiddig (c.
1125) ap Sandde Hardd of Mortyn (c. 1095)
Angharad ferch Gwyn ap Gruffudd, born c. 1415. She married Llewelyn (c. 1400) ap Dafydd (c. 1365) ap Ednyfed (c. 1335)
ap Gruffudd (c. 1300) ap Jenkin (c. 1270) ap Llewelyn (c. 1240) ap Einion (c. 1205) ap Rhiryd (c. 1170) ap Einion (c. 1140)
ap Cadwgan (c. 1110) ap Gronwy (c. 1080) ap Owain (c. 1050) ap Edwin of Tegeingl (c. 1020)
Dwnn ii, 321 cites "Nicholas ap Gwyn ap Gruffudd ap Gronwy Sais" married "Marged
ferch Ieuan ap Rhys Gethyn", while Pen. 127, 57 extends her ancestry as "Ieuan ap Rhys Gethyn ap Gruffudd Fychan" and Pen.
131, 59 continues as "Rhys Gethyn ap Gruffudd Fychan ap Gruffudd ap Dafydd Goch of Penmachno ap Dafydd ap Gruffudd ap Llewelyn
ap Iorwerth". Pen. 287, 677 cites "Iorwerth of Penmachno ap Nefydd Hardd"
Dwnn ii, 322 cites "Gwyn ap Gruffudd ap Gronwy Sais" as the father of Ieuan
Cardiff 3.8, 157 cites "Lleuci ferch Ieuan ap Gwyn ap Gruffudd" married "John
ap Gruffudd Lloyd ap Dafydd"; see #249 above
Pen. 131, 144 cites "Cristyn ferch Gwyn ap Gruffudd ap Gronwy Sais" married "Gronwy
ap Gwilym ap Maredudd ap Gruffudd Lloyd", while Dwnn ii, 89 extends his ancestry as "Gruffudd Lloyd ap Maredudd ap Llewelyn
ap Ynyr ap Hywel ap Moreiddig"
Dwnn ii, 322 cites "Angharad ferch Gwyn ap Gruffudd ap Gronwy Sais" married "Llewelyn
ap Dafydd ap Ednyfed ap Gruffudd ap Jenkin ap Llewelyn ap Einion ap Cadwgan ap Gronwy ap Owain ap Edwin"; that construction
lacks two generations to reach back to Edwin. We believe the Einion in this list was the son of the "Rhiryd ap Einion
ap Cadwgan ap Gronwy ap Owain ap Edwin" cited in Pen. 129, 109/110 and that the Dwnn citation skipped from Einion ap Rhiryd
to Einion ap Cadwgan.
269. Madog ap Ieuan ap Gronwy Ddu. born c. 1395
He married a daughter (c. 1410) ferch
Dafydd (c. 1375) ap Gruffudd Benfras (c. 1345) ap Gruffudd Fychan (c. 1315) ap Gruffudd (c. 1280) ap Madog (c. 1250) ap Rhiryd
(c. 1215) ap Madog Ddu (c. 1185) ap Rhiryd (c. 1155) ap Llewelyn (c. 1120) ap Aldud (c. 1085) ap Owain (c. 1050) ap Edwin
of Tegeingl (c. 1020). They had a daughter:
Marged ferch Madog ap Ieuan, born c. 1425. She married Ithel Fychan (c. 1415) ap Cynfrig (c. 1385) ap Bleddyn (c. 1355).
See #245 above.
Pen. 287, 507 cites "Madog ap Ieuan ap Gronwy Ddu" married "a daughter of Dafydd
ap Gruffudd Benfras ap Gruffudd Fychan", while Pen. 131, 52 extends her ancestry as "Gruffudd Benfras ap Gruffudd Fychan ap
Gruffudd ap Madog ap Rhiryd ap Llewelyn ap Owain ap Aldud". Bartrum's charts use that construction and admit it to be
a generation short; we believe one repeating pair of "Madog ap Rhiryd" was omitted in the citation, and that the descent was
from Llewelyn ap Aldud, a son of Aldud missing from the pedigrees but the patriarch of several families other than this one.
Dwnn ii, 300 cites "Annes ferch Madog ap Ieuan ap Gronwy Ddu" married "Ithel
Fychan ap Cynwrig ap Bleddyn ap Madog". Pen. 135, 139 cites the same marriage, but calls the lady "Marged"
GENERATION 18:
270. Ieuan ap Madog ap Ieuan, born c. 1405.
His wife is unknown, bur he had 2
sons:
John ap Ieuan ap Madog, born c. 1435. He married a daughter (c. 1445) ferch Robert Tegin (c. 1415) ap Dafydd (c. 1385)
ap Tegin (c. 1355) ap Madog (c. 1325) ap Iorwerth Goch (c. 1290) ap Ednyfed Foel (c. 1260) ap Ieuaf Fychan (c. 1230) ap Ieuaf
(c. 1195) ap Llywarch (c. 1160) ap Ieuaf (c. 1130) ap Ninniaw (c. 1095) descended from Tudor Trevor.
Madog ap Ieuan ap Madog, born c. 1435. He married Angharad (c. 1450) ferch Madog (c. 1415) ap Llewelyn (c. 1385) ap
Ednyfed Lloyd (c. 1350) ap Iorwerth Fychan (c. 1305) ap Iorwerth (c. 1275) ap Awr (c. 1240) ap Ieuaf (c. 1195) ap Llywarch
(c. 1160). See this family in the next paragraph above.
PF ii, 351 (quoting Cae Cyriog Ms) says "Madog ap Ieuan ap Madog" married "Angharad
ferch Madog ap Llewelyn ap Ednyfed Lloyd", while Pen. 132, 183 extends her ancestry as "Llewelyn ap Ednyfed Lloyd ap Iorwerth
Fychan ap Iorwerth ap Awr ap Ieuaf" and Pen. 128, 167b extends that to "Awr ap Ieuaf ap Llywarch ap Ieuaf ap Ninniaw"
PF ii, 351 also says John was the son of Madog ap Ieuan, but the wife and son
cited for John dates him to about the same year as Madog ap Ieuan; thus we make John a brother of Madog. (Madog ap Ieuan
did have a son named John, but he married another lady, she born c. 1475) The John of c. 1435 married, according to PF
ii, 351, "a daughter of Robert Tegin ap Dafydd ap Tegin ap Madog ap Iorwerth Goch", and Pen. 131, 54 extends her ancestry
to "Tegin ap Madog ap Iorw |
