#31 - LLOWARCH AP BRAN

Bartrum spells his name "Llywarch" and offers two pedigrees"

(1)  Llywarch ap Bran ap Dinawal ap Eynydd ap Aelan ap Alser ap Tudawal ap Rhodri Mawr

(2)  Llywarch ap Bran ap Dinawal ap Tudwal ap Einudd ap Alan ap Alser ap Tudwal ap Rodri Mawr

In his notes to the pedigrees, Bartrum estimates his birth as c. 1200 and says both pedigrees are too short to be chronologically satisfactory.  Some 11 years later, when he published his "Welsh Genealogies AD300-1400", his chart of Llywarch estimates his birth as c. 1130, as:

Llywarch (1130) ap Bran (1100) ap Dinawal (1070) ap Tudwal (1030) ap Einudd (930) ap Aelan (900) ap Alser (870) ap Tudwal (830) ap Rhodri Mawr (830).

We can only hope this dating was done by a junior staff member of Bartrum's team, whose work was never checked by anyone. Bartrum would have never believed a 100 year old 10th century Welshman sired a child.  Nor that Rhodri Mawr fathered a son about the same year he himself was born.

PEDIGREE 1:

This pedigree follows the correct lineage back to Aelan ap Alser, but omits a second pair of "Aelan ap Alser" before reaching Tudwal Gloff.

PEDIGREE 2:

This version also omits one pair of "Aelan ap Alser" but further errs in attaching Bran to the wrong Dyfnwal. Dyfnwal ap Tudwal ap Eunydd was the father of the c. 1135 Cadifor ap Dyfnwal, and a first-cousin of Bran.

CONCLUSION:

Our work dates the birth of Llowarch ap Bran to c.1120, as:

Llowarch (1120) ap Bran (1090) ap Dyfnwal (1060) ap Eunydd (1030) ap Aelan (995) ap Alser (965) ap Aelan (930) ap Alser (895) ap Tudwal Gloff (865) ap Rhodri Mawr (820.
